Today's serfs still study Chaucer . . -films. Can't you remember when Chaucer wrote his 'Canterbury Tales' in the days when English was just beginning to gain importance? continued Harold. What was there for us to learn then? Today, the English scholars of the King's court become acquainted with the accumulated cultural heritage which has grown from that small beginning. Their lives are broadened by reading, writing, and discussing the ideas which have evolved since Chaucer's time. Every senior leaving the court is well-trained in logical thought and expression, and has learned the value of English as the basis for study in any other field. Well, snapped Bertram, one would hardly think they realize the merits of their training. Their attitude is enough to make me angry right down to rny foundation. Forsooth, Bertram, comprehension of the full worth of literature comes gradually, learned tutors spend four years teaching the serfs to understand the importance of the study of the English language and literature as preparation ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Seated First Row, L. to R.: Mrs. Brooks, Miss Maher, Mr. Gerlich, Mr. Fechheimer, Miss Unser, Chair-many Mr. Gray, Mr. Smith, Second Row L. to R.: Mr. Shoglow, Mr. Weingart, Miss McKenna, Mrs. McConnell, Mrs. Goldsmith, Mr. F. The serfs have also received counsel from Mr. Gray in choosing their paths toward higher learning, and, as a foundation to these future studies, the Capable library staff has aided them in their research. With all these advisers, masters, and tutors to help them they have a chance to become great people, even greater than that great 'chiseler' of our own day, Michaelangelo. HISTORY DEPARTMENT Seated First Row L. to R.: Rueth, Mrs. Maclvor, Mr Balser Mr Guzov Miss Car Mr. Bessins, Mr. Crystal, Mr. Amend, Mr. Rubin, Mrs. velli, Mrs. Bomserg Th1rdR0w L to R Mr Kelly Chan' Eiflerg Second Row L. to R.: Mrs. Duckworth, Miss many Mr. DeMeo, Mr. Esrerowitz Dr Kirsch Mr Lunnin Mr. Schwartzapfel, Mr Rosenfeld Mrs Goldman for future years spent in the vast modern world beyond the walls of the Kingdom. The understanding given the English scholar is analogous to that given the history student, and in neither case is four years a lengthy time to gain this understanding, Harold went on. Zounds, Harold, at times your credulity astounds me. You can't really be- lieve that memorizing facts and dates benefits the serfs! Don't you see, Bertram? The purpose of studying history is manifold, it is not merely for the facts and dates, as you and many others erroneously believe. By analyzing the events of the past, we are better able to comprehend the problems facing our Kingdom today. No knight is fit to dwell in our realm without understanding the workings of the governmentg with this knowledge he is able to participate intelligently and prudently in court affairs. Studying history teaches the Kings subjects to think, to weigh evidence, to form opinions, and to attempt to solve their problems through sensible reasoning. ,f s Charting the course of history m, ,
