PARKS HISTORY USS FLOYD B. PARKS is named for the late Major Floyd B. Parks, United States Marine Corps. Major Parks was a Marine aviator who lost his life during the defense of Midway Island against the assaults of the Japanese Navy in June 1942. For his heroism he was awarded the Na y Cross, the Purple Heart and a special letter of commendation from the Secretary of the Navy. PARKS is a Gearing class destroyer and was built by the Consolidated Steel Corporation at Orange, Texas on the banks of the Sabine River. Mrs. Floyd B. Parks, the widow of the late Major Parks, sponsored the ship at her launching on 31 March 1945. After com- missioning and shake dowoi cruise, she was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and proceeded to San Diego, California, wliich has continued to be her home port throughout her 20 years of service. During 1955, PARKS was on duty in the l- ' ormosa area during th e outbreak of hostilities in the TaclK-n Island area. She was one of four destroyers present who assisted the Nationalist Chinese in the evacuation of the troubled islands. The Laotian crisis of 1959 found PARKS on the sp(Jt and ready with a show of force. In addition to tliis action, PARKS participated in one of the early experimental cold weather exercises, MICROWEX, in the Bearing Sea, and was an active participant in the Kniwetok Bikini atomic testing operations of 1958. During the course of these assignments, PARKS has completed fifteen deployments to the Western Pacific . In October I 9o:5 PARKS again deployed to the Western Pacific to serve with the SEVENTH FLEF.T as a unit of Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla MNE. During the course of tiiis latest cruise PARKS operated as a unit of the Taiwan Patrol Force and the SEVENTH 1-LEET attack carrier strike force. PARKS visited Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Taiway, Korea and various ports m Japan before returning to her homeport of San Diego in April 19t)4. 26
