We asked Coach Bishop about his team ' s year in baseball. Our record last year was five wins and 4 losses. We tied for fourth in the New River District. The year before last we lost both of our pitchers, and had to break in two new pitchers. Our losses came early in the season, and we started winning toward the end of the season as our pitchers got better. We lost only one starter from last year (Darrell Vest) so we have eight out of nine returning this year. I ' m expecting the team to be real good. Baseball is one of the more popular sports in the area, and we have a good supply of players coming up through the sandlot program. The future looks bright. FCHS Has State Champion Last year track had a winning season, with a record of 6-4 and for the first time, a student from FCHS brought home a state championship. The team tied for fifth place in district, finished seventh at regional, and tied for twelfth in State. Most of this was on points won by Roger McAlexander. Roger was state champion two miles in the AA division and he established several new records at district and regional in the one and two mile run. Coach Raines stated, “we were hurt by the loss of David Smith, Phil Reed, and Cary Spence, who were out because of injuries. 1974 will be short about six or so seniors who graduated, including Roger, and when you lose a state champion it ' s hard but we have some younger members who are look- ing good. I think we ' ll have another winning season this year. The expressions of Coach Raines and state champion Roger McAlexander tell it all. With a definite plan in mind, Roger McAlexander paces himself and comes to the finish line a winner. 30
