DISCIPLINES THE MIND TO REASON LOGICALLY The mathematics department steers its students on an interesting but sometimes difficult journey through the land of numbers. Students are provided with chal- lenging activities that serve to abate their endless in- quisitiveness. Problems encountered in a mathematics class can easily be applied to one ' s daily life. Courses in mathematics are offered on diverse levels ranging from Math I and II, a review of basic arithmetic, to advanced math, a recent addition to the curriculum, which includes a course in analytic geometry and pre- calculus. ✓V Simple ciphering is seldom encountered in the second level of a general math course. Geometric figures extend beyond real numbers to ab- stracts, planes, and solids. Fifth-year math students find that systemized charts simplify logarithmic computation. 21

PRESENT, AND FUTURE History is a tale that never ends. The new grows out of the old and is built upon it. Knowing what has gone before, we are better able to understand what is yet to come. The teachers of the social studies department help the student acquire the skill to view the conflicts and challenges of the world without prejudice. In order to be prepared for the responsibility that will be a part of his adult life, the student must be aware of the foreign and domestic problems surrounding him. By noting the rela- tionship between these past and current events, he will be able to meet the challenge that tomorrow ' s society will present. HHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NAZISM r i ' □ HITLER Mr. Campbell puts spotlight on a newly organized nation in Africa. Civics students become familiar with the why and how of war as they learn what true Nazism is. World history classes combine talents, studies, and fun to create an exhibit portraying the military tactics of the early Romans. 23 Junior history students move their pens and pen- cils rapidly across their papers as they take notes from lectures on the Old Dominion.
