PROMOTES PROGRESS IN LEARNING The mammouth task of administering Floyd County High School belongs to the Principal Ray L. Hollandsworth. To him fall the responsibilities of making decisions, super- vising financial matters, and deciding school policies. Mr. David Harman, the Assistant Principal, has the duties of making daily announcements over the intercom system and handling the disciplinary problems that arise in the school. Within the awesome rooms called the office one finds diligent people dedicated to running the school to the best of their ability. Their management guides FCHS to the highest heights of learning. Mr. Ray Hollandsworth, a recipient of both his B. S. and M.S. degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, is now serving his fifth year as principal of FCHS. Mr. David Harman, holder of a B.S. from VPI, serves as Assistant Principal and teacher of agriculture. The Secretary to the Principal, Mrs. Iris Poff, efficiently carries out her numerous duties. Stacks of papers often surround Mrs. Lorice O ' Connor, receptionist and bookkeeper. 13

cm The accomplishments of the school board of Floyd County High School have made FCHS one of the best high schools in the state of Virginia. The industriousness and foresight of a competent staff have helped the school maintain the high standards set up by the Southern Asso- ciation of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Virginia State Department of Education. The school board con- stantly tries to make the best better by promoting those issues which best represent the interests of our high school. The innovation of a Director of Instruction in addition to the federally financed programs— the NYC, the Remedial Reading Program, and Basic Adult Education classes— all supplement the progress of a modern school. ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Ruby West, Supervisor of Federal P ro g r a m s; Mrs. Dorothy Casteel, General Supervisor; Mrs. Virgie Weeks, Secretary to Superintendent; Mr. John Houston, Director of Instruction. Mr. Alonzo Monday, Division Superintendent, finds that his duties keep him busy from dawn to dusk. The members of the school board are Mrs. Mildred Thompson, Clerk of the Board; Mr. Alonzo Monday, Superintendent; Mr. Marvin Cole, Mr. Benton Alderman, Mr. Gerald Phillips, Mr. Rex Nixon, Mr. R. O. Slusher, Chairman; Mr. B. P. Simpson, Vice-Chairman. 12

SMILE, TEACHERS: YOU’RE ON A surprise birthday cake from the student council sym- bolizes a year to remember for Mr. Hollandsworth. When the word teacher is mentioned, a particular image always pops into a student ' s mind— an image por- traying one associated only with school and education. Many times students fail to realize that teachers enjoy taking part in the fun and laughter shared in the world of teenagers. Realizing this, the Bison Staff has used a camera to catch faculty members in the act of being themselves. By reflecting their images on paper, students can see that teachers, too, are individuals who are human. Anxious Coach Brookman ' s expression mirrors disbelief. A teacher ' s work is never done! Mr. Marshall finds that collecting A smile is contagious and choral teacher football admission money adds to his never ending duties. Mrs. Mock proves it. 14
