THE ADMIRAL PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1957 FLOYD HIGH SCHOOL Floyd, Virginia Captain........... Crew.............. Passengers....... Theatre of Action . Service Decoration . . . . (Principal) (Administration) .... (Students) . . . . (Activities) . . (Superlatives) (Advertisements) THE ADMIRAL is not only a yearbook; THE ADMIRAL is also one of Floyd County's most famous sons. Robley Dunglison Evans was born in Floyd in 1846 and attended the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. During the War between the States he became an ensign in the United States Navy. He was in command of the Iowa during the Spanish- American War, and took an important part at Santiago in destroying the fleet of the Spanish naval commander. In 1910 he was made a rear admiral and the next year became commander of the entire Asiatic Fleet. The fir st yearbookat Floyd High was publishedin 1935. It was named THE ADMIRAL in honor of Rear Admiral Evans at the suggestion of Mrs. Winston Proffit, mother of one of the members of the graduating class that year. Cherished moments in the lives of Floyd alumni are still preserved under this name. Our bon-voyage together during these years at FloydHighhas been largely due to your loving guidance, your sacrifices, your never- failing confidence in us. Though we have grown in wisdom through o u r experiences, our greatest 1 e s s o n has been o n e of appreciation. To our parents, with grateful hearts, we dedicate this edition of the Admiral.
