Capping Ceremony Capping is a big moment in the A life of a freshman. The foundation of practical experience begins as they receive their caps. What is capping? It is a tradition which symbolizes the nursing profession. Originally the cap served to keep the hair in place, but now it has a much deeper concept to its wearer. It means that each girl who is receiving a cap is dedicating her life to the service of mankind. The capping ceremony serves as a reward for her first few months of concentrated effort in the probationary period. It marks the beginning of more advanced studies for the student. This year on February 4, 1966, thirty-one anxious girls walked down the aisle of Epworth Methodist Church to re- ceive their nurses' caps. Following a greeting by Mr. Victor Bjork and a few selections by the student Glee Club, the class was accepted and a cap was presented to each girl. Together the class recited the Nightingale Pledge, symbolizing a dedication to their profession. 18
