Todd Sells shoots The ninth grade basketballers, coached by Coach George Herro, played their season in halves. Their final season record ended in them winning eleven and losing eleven. The team really appeared strong towards the end of the season win- ning nine of eleven games. The fish were rewarded with such talent as the outstanding shooting of Jimmy Neal, the great rebounding of Todd Sells, and the overall talent of Bobby Jackson. Coach Herro commented that the Freshman proved them- selves a group with much talent and future. ALL THE WAY T0 STATE A dream come true. The varsity team reached for the highest star and got a glimpse of it. They earned the right to be one of four teams to represent the 3A class in the State Tournament and went even further by reaching the finals. The Lady Hornets met up with Dumas there and were downed 53-43. But on their way to the big one the Hornets completed their district play with a perfect record of 14-0. The two most significant games were against Tuloso-Midway beating them in both by only four points, 30-26 and 42-38. In the Bi-District game the Lady Hornets defeated Roma, 68-36, with a surprisingly large margin. Refugio was the site of the Regional showdown between our Hor- nets and Bay City. Bay City was the first of only three teams to beat the Lady Hornets. They did this in the Victo ria Tournament with a score of 49-43. But in the Regional game the Hornets didn't let down a single fan because they defeated Bay City 55-44. With this victory they then advanced to the semi-finals of the State Tournament in Austin. Matched against Azle, the Lady Hornets played before more than 300 fans and thoroughly satisfied everyone of them by stopping Azle 42-31. With this win they earned the right to play in the State finals against Dumas. Dumas arose the victors with a score of 63-43 With this game the Lady Hornets who were ranked fifth in the State at the beginning of the season finished in sec ond place.
