One of the most thrilling things about sports is the feel- ing of success. One who is labeled a loser but suddenly becomes a winner, one who feels inadequate but sud- denly becomes confident, one who has been a pushover and all at once is a force to be reckoned with. What football fan at the Bluff will ever forget the 1979 football season. What player here will ever cease to remember the effort the dedication and the will power that was exerted to bring about a revival of the Hornet Football Team. It wasn't all honey and roses. The very first game with Taft was very painful because we lost and we wanted to win the first game so very much. Then the Premont game provided us with so much elation because it was the very first victory in such a long time. The second victory came over Ingleside and added much to our self-confidence. Then came Gregory-Portland and the question arose whether we had the stuff to even be on the field with them. The sting of defeat was eased somewhat due to the fact we played a fine game, especially our defense unit. Now the Tuloso-Midway situation was something else. After what looked like a humiliating defeat, the Hornets astounded the Warriors and all others who stayed in the' final two minutes and scored 20 points to tie the score. Oh, what jubiliation there was for the Hornets. Then came the solid victory over Rockport. West Oso followed and another fantastic come back late in the game that seemed to assure us of another victory, however, we learned how the other shoe feels as the Bears gave us a dose of our own medicine by scoring in the last 30 sec- onds. The Sinton game was rather boring as the Honrets methodically earned another victory. Homecoming gmaes are very special, and against Calallen, the Hornets notched their first win for the ex's and the loyal fans. A very tough game that saw the lead change several times before it ended. Again a big mile- stone as it assured the Hornets of a winning season. The final game with Beeville proceeded to be another thriller that saw Beeville squeezing by the Hornets as the clock ran out. As a coach the season was one of the most enjoyable parts of my career. To be around a bunch of boys such as the '79 Hornets was certainly inspiring. I will be eternally grateful to the seniors for their leader- ship and adaptability in my first year at Flour Bluff. Rss Larry Albin unloads with full force on the West Oso quarterback.
