The College of Arts and Sciences has five major fields of study in the General Education Program. They are: Communications, Personal Develop- ment, Social Thoughts and Institutions, Humani- ties, and Natural Sciences. Requirements in these insure a broad general education. When a general foundation is laid, the student emphasizes in his program advanced work in the field of his choice. For example, if he wishes to be a chemist, he majors in chemistry, or if he wishes to be a High School English teacher, he majors in English. The various departments in the College of Arts and Sciences offer a great variety of courses from which a student may elect studies outside his major field. Students interested in one of the professions — law, medicine, dentistry, engineering or in a civil service career will find it in the College of Arts and Sciences pre-professional curricular. Two, three or four years of pre-professional train- ing are required before the student actually enters the professional school. The general trend of professional schools is to demand a broad lib- eral education as prerequisite to the professional training. The Liberal Arts Degree satisfies this demand in every regard. Psychology at work. The College of Arts and Sciences offers two undergraduate degrees, a B.S. and an A.B. de- gree. Requirements for the A.B. degree include two years of a foreign language and six hours in the humanities area in addition to the General Education requirements. A Graduate Program is also included in the College of Arts and Sciences. A Ph.D. is offered in a number of departments: Botany, Chemistry, English, Meterology, Physiology, Psychology, Speech and Zoology. Young chemist at work. Experiments in biology.
