STUDENT LIFE

Page 21 text:

The first step to wisdom is the fear of the Lord, and the l nowledge of the Holy One is understanding; for through Me your days will be multiplied and years will be added to your life. (Proverbs 9; 10-11) Thus spoke an ancient sage. And were he to speak today, in 1980, how might he speak of wisdom, of the heart, of the relationship with the Holy One, the Lord? Perhaps this way: Wisdom is knowing that the truth of life is simply that we are most alive when, in the midst of our tearing around in our busyness trying to do something, we stop once in awhile and just let ourselves be who we are. Wisdom is when, by unclenching our fists, we let life have a chance to do something with us. Wisdom is when we take the little piece of time that we have in this world and pay attention to what it is telling us; not just what it is telling us about the beauty of a flower or a sunset, but also to what it is telling us about all the wildness and strangeness and pain of things, the tears of things as well as the joy of things. Wisdom includes our intuition as well as our reason, the wisdom of the flesh as well as the wis dom of the mind. There are dreams to listen to, as well as stereos. Wisdom is knowing that we are really alive when we listen to each other, when the walls between us crumble a little. Wisdom is knowing that we are really alive when we manage somehow to love: When we love the mystery and beauty that loom vast just beneath the surface, when we look at each other and say, Grace and peace be with you, sister, brother, friend. Happy is the one who has found wisdom. The first step to wisdom is the fear of the Lord ... Robert W. Breuer .Vfil »iil|MiM7f i

OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING AND GROWTH I student life at Florida South- ern College allows the stu- dent to pursue those things wh ich she or he as an individ- ual values as important, to set goals and meet the challenge of reaching those goals. Student life is an outlet for creativity, enabling us to learn more about ourselves and others. Those who are afraid to dare, to try out their wings, or fear the possibility of failure are those who deem student life as inadequate to meet their needs. The key to successful student life Is entering into it with on attitude of learning. You ore the student and the exper- ience or challenge is the teacher. Student life is similar to any other class we participate in, yet our life as a student ob- tains more for us than mere credits to add towards gradu- ation. One way or another our lives are shaped by the exper- iences we partake in, and these experiences also pre- pare us for the years that lie ahead outside of college. Student life reveals and teaches that there are many realms to become involved in, but we must pursue them wholeheartedly. As it is in life, a half-hearted effort too of- ten results in wasted time. To realize our individuality we must draw out the creativity which lies within us, putting a handle on that creativity so that we may take hold of it and master it. The control of creativity enables us to dis- cover new interests in life be- cause with it we can create a challenge or goal worthy of striving toward. The things which can be mastered by the individual are only limited by a lack of creativity and stick-to-it-ivness. When striving toward a goal, you must desire to reach it with sincere motivation. To accomplish a task based on other people ' s expectations will only cause you to look back to determine your pro- gress instead of looking ahead to the finish line of that goal. When you determine the goal or challenge, you are more in- clined to pursue it with confi- dence. If you have always thought of student life as merely a chance to escape from school and studies, perhaps now you will see that it is actu- ally one of our richest oppor- tunities for learning and growth in our quest for wis- dom. iiiiiw, riu aEKPf v , u-
