The first step to wisdom is the fear of the Lord, and the l nowledge of the Holy One is understanding; for through Me your days will be multiplied and years will be added to your life. (Proverbs 9; 10-11) Thus spoke an ancient sage. And were he to speak today, in 1980, how might he speak of wisdom, of the heart, of the relationship with the Holy One, the Lord? Perhaps this way: Wisdom is knowing that the truth of life is simply that we are most alive when, in the midst of our tearing around in our busyness trying to do something, we stop once in awhile and just let ourselves be who we are. Wisdom is when, by unclenching our fists, we let life have a chance to do something with us. Wisdom is when we take the little piece of time that we have in this world and pay attention to what it is telling us; not just what it is telling us about the beauty of a flower or a sunset, but also to what it is telling us about all the wildness and strangeness and pain of things, the tears of things as well as the joy of things. Wisdom includes our intuition as well as our reason, the wisdom of the flesh as well as the wis dom of the mind. There are dreams to listen to, as well as stereos. Wisdom is knowing that we are really alive when we listen to each other, when the walls between us crumble a little. Wisdom is knowing that we are really alive when we manage somehow to love: When we love the mystery and beauty that loom vast just beneath the surface, when we look at each other and say, Grace and peace be with you, sister, brother, friend. Happy is the one who has found wisdom. The first step to wisdom is the fear of the Lord ... Robert W. Breuer .Vfil »iil|MiM7f i
