L IN THE MYTHOLOGY of almost every ancient race the Tree has stood as a sacred Symbol of Life. Viewed variously as the hearer of Life ' s fruit, as the shellerer and protector of early man, as his natural temple wherein he worshipped whatever Gods were known to his primitive mind, this eternal Yggdrasil of the ancient Germans, Tree of Life of Hebrew tradition and Egyptian folklore, has be- come today the Cloven Oak of England, battered and scarred symbol of the fight for Justice and Truth. Yet, as Time has placed its indelible mark upon this age and upon this year, we turn again to the Tree which on our own campus has become the sym- bol of youth ' s growth from a young green shoot to the sturdy plant of maturity, bearing its fruit in the world of today, even as it sends its tap root deep into the soil of those eternal values found only in a Christian democratic society; standing firm against the onslaughts of wind, rain and adversity. Here, among these trees have we found beauty; here have we known those quiet moments in which our souls have found guidance for the tasks of the future; here have we shared our dreams, even as the winds have told us of things to come; here have these trees become for us symbols of one brief, ecstatic moment, our college years. Blow winds, strip bare our limbs, yet towering over an age of warfare, we shall yet stand to blossom forth in other Springs!
