O. or l. K. O. routes For their last light the lackets traveled to Chester for their return bout with the Red Cyclones. Florence was less fortunate in this hattle and was defeated by the score of six to two. Howexer this did not take away their crown as the jacket team had won more bouts than any other team in South Carolina. 'lhe lilorenee lighters who fought a majority of the fights and won a large number of them are Merriman Mcffown, Revel Cissendanner cffers McCrary VVi1lis, Haselden Bridges Cauthon :ml Nlaynard. lhe otiicial call for boxing practice was sent out by Coach Raymond Blackwell on january' 4. About thirty men responded to the call of which there were only three letter men back from last year s squad: Maynard Viillis and Revel. Maynard who had shown outstanding ability last year was elected captain of the Florence Mittmen. ln the preliminaries the boys showed up well and gave great promise of maintaining their rank of State Champions. :Xfter working hard for about two weeks to get in good condition under co-coaches Blackwell and Johnson the squad traveled to Dillon on january' Z1 to meet the strong Dillon team. Both teams fought well and the tights resulted in a draw. On january 28 when a return hout with Dillon was fought it was a different story' and the ,lackets carried off the honors to the tune of four and one-half to two and one-half. The Chester Mittmen journeyed to Florence on February' 1, to meet defeat at the hands of a rapidly improving Jacket team. The score was seven to two. On February ll the Florence Pugs traveled to Orangeburg to meet the strong Edisto lnflians. Orangeburg was the co-holder xy ith Florence of the State title last year and there- fore was expected to give Ureat oppositfoi. Both teams were determined to retain their crown and the fight ended in a deadlock. the score being four to four. On February Z5 the Brooklyn-Cayce squad came down for their annual battle and met de- feat at the hands of the undefeated Florence team by a score, of five and one-half to one and one-half. The team lost '1 rough and tumble game to the strong Marion team in their next encounter. bollowing this a game was played in thc Tlorence gym between Dillon and Florence. florence scored the first points but were utterly 'tt a. loss by the trick passing of the Dillon sextette. Dillon nosed out a hard fought victory over the home team. lhis was the lirst loss of the season. Florence lost a heart-breaker to the strong Marion team in Marion in the return game. The team journeyed to Charleston one week-end and bagged two games from Memminger lligh School and Nlurray Vocational School. lhe next week Memmingers team returned the game and defeated the Florence lassics about eight points. Keiserman a second-string for- ward substituted in this game and surprised a thrill packed audience with her uncanny shooting. She shows great promise as a forward for the coming Florence Hi-fh team. Florence lost her last game to Hartsville on March 5. which closed the basketball season for them. Player a new student in our school played a 'heads-up' game in Hartsville. The members of the regular team have asked that we give some mention to the Subs of this year as they think that they had a lot to do with the success of this year s season.
