Highsmith made FHS history as he was the first write-in candidate elected to the SBP position. The Student Body President election this year, held April 7-11, produced a first time result at FHS. It was the first time a write-in candidate won the election. J. R. Highsmith was that write-in candidate, and will therefore serve as SBP next year. SBP election week provided a chance for candidates to prove themselves worthy of the position. Throughout the week, candidates displayed posters and passed out name pins. Speech day for the candidates was held on Wednesday, while students voted on Friday. On speech day, special appearances were made by Stevie Wonder for Derek Wagner and Pee Wee Herman for Kathy Edg-ington. The Lady Wolves started off as an inexperienced team. This year, they put their heads together and put the word “WIN” in their minds; they did this just by having a little confidence. The varsity squad consisted of seven seniors, one junior and four sophomores. The serving award was given to Karen Klein with an average of 91.3%, Cindy Banhart was selected MVP, and was given the spiking award. Kari Wood was given the setting award with a percentage of 97.5%. Annette Hubble was given the blocking award in addition to the sportsmanship plaque. Coached by Cheri Burkett and Denise Miglin, the Lady Wolves look to have a winning season next year, even though they’ll lose seven seniors. Football Wolves Go The Fighting Wolves, hoping for a chance in the state playoffs, fell a little short this season. Losing the first four games, the Wolf Pack regrouped for Homecoming to beat Lawrenceville 48-0. Winning the next three games in a row, the Shrine game with Olney was the deciding game for a winning season for the Wolves. The Wolves held off the Tigers for three quarters, but the Tigers overpowered the Wolves to get into the state playoffs. This year’s Wolves were strong and dedicated, while they played challenging football. Next year’s team should prove to be even more successful. Captains this year were Jeff Miglin, John Koenig, Ron Phelps and Doug Eaton. The team opened with a major loss to Carmi, only capturing a few matches. After that, the path could go only upward. The team captured seven wins. This is five more than any other wrestling team in Flora history. The matches lost were usually because of the difficulty in rebounding from the deficit for forfeiting three weight classes. At the end of the season the wrestlers claimed two Conference champs and a Sectional qualifier. The team placed third in Conference, the highest placing ever for a Flora team. Like the Varsity, the J.V. team had a good season, noted for a number of hardworking freshmen and sophomores. Varsity captain, Sherrie Frost, was recognized for her abilities by being chosen to participate for the All-American Cheerleader Award. When football season came, the cheerleaders gave inspiration, while the Wolfpack battled opponents on the field. With the Pep Club, they sponsored the annual bonfire. Basketball season once again proved to be exciting. With shouts of “We Are Flora,” the cheerleaders showed their support throughout the entire season. Overall, the girls had quite a successful season. Next year, they plan to become even better. Boys’ Team Tracks Down Victories This year’s track season started out slow, but ended on a good note. It took a while for the tracksters to get into shape, but once they did, they gave everything their best effort. Some of the meets the Cindermen excelled in were the Cardinal Invitational and the Olney Carnival. At these they placed 1st and 3rd respectively. Coach Welch made the statement many times throughout the year about “Phil Leib being a thoroughbred”. Phil proved it again at Sectionals where he and Wesley Greenwood qualified for State. Phil broke the school record in the 800 m. run with a time of 1:59.74. Row I: Clay Metcalf, Phil Leib, Ed Bassett, Doug Eaton, Rodney Greenwood, Ron Phelps, Tyler Anderson, Earnest Johnson. Row 2: Lester Hutchings. Shawn Williamson, Matt Thompson. Hank Hilmes, Kelly Berger, Tony James, Wesley Greenwood, Justin Markham. Jason Leib, J. R. Monical, Alex Pearce, and Coach Lowell Pemberton. Softball Defends Regional Victory Kari makes a diving catch in the outfield. Karen takes a low ball. Scoring a run. Renee slides into home. Deanna warms up her pitching between innings. Kim makes an overhead catch as Janet and Renee back her up. The Wolfgals ended their best season ever with a 15-3 record. The Wolfgals for the first time won NEC Conference from the defending champions Carmi in a hard fought battle that lasted 8 innings. Not only did they win Conference, but they also won Regionals for the second year in a row and won second place in the Albion tournament. At the Sectionals, the Wolfgals scored the most runs against the powerful Casey team. The team batted a .399 going into their last game against the number one ranked team Casey. Deanna Wagner recorded her third no-hit shutout and also recorded the first home run ever. Row I: Deborah Wagner, Susan Fife. Carol Todd, Debbie Wreath, Staci Porter. Row 2: Karen Klein, Kim McGrew, Deanna Wagner, Kari Wood, Renee Phelps, Kelly Krutsingcr, Janet Krutsinger, Kathy Edginton and Coach Rick Porter. 80 Baseball Determined, But Unsuccessful in Reaching Goals everal iatting The Wolves baseball team had a good season, but came close to having a great one. Boys’ Tennis: Dedication, Bustle, Hard Work Although the boy’s tennis team started with some disappointments they ended their season on a high note. In the first half of their season they suffered several losses to some good teams. In the Conference meet at Olncy. they nearly captured the Conference title. In the end they placed a close second. After Conference, about half of the team meets remained, and they made the best of them. The team worked hard to improve their record and skills to prepare for the Sectional. The Sectional meet at Olney was one of the best around, with Robinson and EfTingham attending, but although the competition was tough. Flora played competitively. Bekin and Shannon played several rounds before being defeated. The doubles team of Kan Korpela and John Bute and the team of Kart Kramer and Derek Wagner played well also. All in all. the team showed spirit through their ups and downs. Hopes are up for next year as four lettermen return and eight freshmen come in.
