H Vt IV t L People from all fifty- states will consider the 1984 Olympic year a special one. Athletes and sports fans from all over the world will converge on Los Angeles with going for the gold as a battle cry. At FHS, however, we want to look back to the Olympiads of the ancient Greeks and take our inspiration from them. These original Olympic Games were dedicated to the glorification of the gods and the exploitation of all aspects of physical and mental development. The Greeks considered man as an individual striving for both mental and physical perfection. Telling the FHS story of 83-84 is a good time to recognize the opportunities for development here at our school. While the early Olympics held challenges in painting and sculpture, our art classes provide outlets for many talented people. Just as the Greeks held contests in music and drama, so our band and chorus present musicals and concerts and Mr. McCoy produces a play. Through our varied classes we stimulate our minds and prepare for college and develop our manual dexterity in a variety of skills. In physical education, we train our bodies to keep pace with our minds and provide a knowledge of recreation for future activity. Organizations provide pleasure and the growth of social skills. Finally, of course, just as the modern Olympic Games recognize and emphasize the physical development of the athlete, so our sports give this opportunity to our FHS Wolves. This book should show the reader that the students who are involved in the areas available to them are indeed meeting the challenge and achieving the goal of preparing for a fulfilling future. 2 NEW OCCASIONS TEACH NEW DUTIES .. ” EVENTS Everyone Loves a Mystery — F.H.S. Some seniors became more carefree as they realized they ‘‘had it made, while others became more diligent than ever as they pressed on for honored positions and scholarships. Eighteenth birthdays rolled around for some, with the official status of adulthood. With the arrival of N.H.S. senior shirts, the halls blossomed orange and blue '84s, a sure sign that seniors are loyal classmates. Research in the library and the learning center reigned supreme in April and May as everyone crammed for debates and many labored over research papers. Finally, the last exciting week arrived with only rehearsals, not classes, requiring attendance. Baccalaureate with the traditional sermon was enhanced by the victorious baseball team members arriving, still dressed in their dusty suits. On the big night, commencement, everyone was a winner, of course, but the following pictures recognize those who, indeed, went for the gold and got it in ‘84. Kelly Kaufman and Debbie Powell were Still competing during the fourth quarter for the number one position in the senior class. Seniors speculate during a debate in Mr Baird's class. Comp. IV students exhibit loyalty to the class of '84 by wearing their senior T-shirts. Top Ten Departmental Awards Horn ? Senior Survey The 1984 FHS graduates were asked their favorites in a survey to find out the favorites of the senior class as a whole. While at home, seniors enjoy reading or partying the most. If they’re watching TV, it might be turned to “The A-Team” or “The Fall Guy” as these were the most common answers. Seniors picked “Porky’s” as their favorite movie while “An Officer and a Gentleman” and “Rocky III” were chosen as second and third favorites. When asked their favorite actor and actress, the most frequent reply was Burt Reynolds and Heather Thomas. In the music field, Quiet Riot won the favorite group and WYER turned out to be the favorite radio station. Since 1984 is a year of the Olympics, seniors were asked their most-liked event of the Games. Gymnastics, ice skating, and hockey were the most popular answers. At school, seniors enjoy English and math the most as favorite subjects. Other common answers were accounting, history, and Senior Political Science. If given their choice of cars, seniors would rather cruise in a Corvette or Trans-Am. Tony Dorsett, Larry Bird, and Dr. J were chosen as the top three sports figures, and pizza proved to be the is favorite by far in the food category. Seniors Starting out the year with a bang, the Class of 84” took 1st place for bringing the most boxes to the bonfire and captured 2nd place on their Homecoming float entitled “Indians Have .. .One Life to Live. After Homecoming, the thoughts of the seniors turned toward passing the State and Federal Constitutions. Soon the seniors were ordering graduation announcements and senior keys. Before they knew it, their four years at F.H.S. were almost over as graduation was just around the corner. Hurry, girls, before Cal gets all the pizza! The lone bright spot had been a 24-19 victory over the Carmi Bulldogs. However, the Wolves turned things around by winning their remaining four games to raise their record to 5-4 for the season. 1983 marked the first time in three years that the Wolves earned a winning season. RAH! — RAH! — RAH! — RAH! — RAH! — RAH! — RAH! — RAH! — Mount in motion to Beat It.' Keeping the crowds alive at the games was again one of the major accomplishments of the FHS Cheerleading Squad. In the summer they attended an N.C.A. camp where they were presented with many awards and N.C.A. achievements. This year the girls decided to put a little more spark into Homecoming — they painted the field for the game and the windows uptown — they performed their Beat It routine and orange and blue balloons, which they decorated, were released after the routine. During basketball they provided us with fancy footwork and towering mounts. The thrills of the year were cheering at the Olney Shriners' game and in the Assembly Hall at Champaign. 71 Boys’ Basketball With three returning starters from six returning letter winners and a slogan of “You gotta believe!,” the 1984 basketball Wolves powered their way to the Elite Eight. The regular season play was marred by only two losses, each to teams previously defeated, which, however, resulted in the Wolves having to settle for second in NEC. This setback was definitely overridden by two invitational firsts leading into regional play. Firsts in regional, sectional, and super sectional took the Wolves and their fans all the way to Champaign for a berth in the state tournament. A decisive loss in the first game there, left only greater determination to show them next year.” The J.V. Wolves had an equally successful season, as they ended the year with a 17-2 record. One of the highlights of the season was when the team advanced to the NEC championship for the first time. After losing to Mt. Carmel in the championship game, the Wolfgals began to go into a tailspin. They managed to regroup in time to win the first round of regional play. A tough Wayne City team ended Flora's season by defeating the Wolfgals in a close 7-6 ball game. This year’s baseball team turned out to be one of the best in the school’s history. Tom Krutsinger and Jerry Berger decided to produce their own “Tom and Jerry Show” as they led the Wolves with their tremendous pitching abilities. But we must not forget about the rest of the guys. O. Box 759 Charles Sisk Carbondale, IL 62901 Looking back at the 1983-84 school year, I see a winning attitude that prevailed at Flora High School, a “success” attitude that also helped to develop a “totally rounded being.” As the year progressed, we saw the atmosphere, conducive to this attitude, evolve when the boys' basketball team qualified for state competition. Looking back, I see an exemplary track record of students trying to become the best possible persons they can be. Kim Glassford’s acceptance to West Point is an example of winning efforts. Tammy Harris’ musical talents and cheerleading achieved state and national recognition. I hope that this book will illustrate all the main events of the year, recalled in later years as those things that make high school memories competitive in live’s over-all recollection. Mrs. Anne Riley’s energetic and persevering attitude, prompting the staff to keep going, deserves a gold medal award. Other meritorious winning performances were made by Norman Phillips, Rich Owens, The Advocate Press and Lyndal “Smitty” Smith. Record breaking efforts by the Harstan staff deserve recognition for much spare time spent cropping pictures, drawing layouts, and writing copy, not to mention Margaret Arnold’s typing. But the successful participation of the student and faculty of FHS, the main players of the book, provided the statistics and cooperation needed to make the 1984 Harstan the success we hope it is. Margaret, the unsung heroine 123 Memories As the dwarfs look on. Prince Greenwood gives Snow Green the kiss of life. Kevin and Cindy decide “To Be or Not to Be. Girls, Girls, let’s control our emotions. Golly gee! Another day!” Watch those hands! exclaimed the pigs. Greg’s fan club bids a final farewell before he leaves for state.
