•.............. Seniors One of the big events that started off the 1981-82 school year for the seniors was the exciting Homecoming weekend. The senior class got third in Homecoming float competition with the theme of their float, “On the Right Track.” After Homecoming weekend, seniors turned their thoughts toward passing the Constitution, Prom, and, last but not least, G-R-A-D-U-A-T-I-O-N! The 1981-82 senior class will always cherish these past four years at FHS and are very proud to be the graduating “Class of ’82”. After the girls' volleyball game on Thursday night, a pep session was held, followed by a snake dance and bonfire to prepare everyone for Friday night's football game. On Friday afternoon, the Freshman class won the Homecoming parade float competition with their float entitled “Up in Smoke. That night the Wolves were ready to play and posted a victory over the Lawrenceville Indians. On Saturday evening, the traditional Homecoming Dance was held in Conley Gymnasium. Susan Winka and Richard Russell received the honor of being elected queen and king. The rest of the court consisted of Amy Thomas and Cindy Booth, queen candidates; Guy Brown and John Harrison, king candidates; Linda Matlock and Melani Fry, junior attendants; Angie Reagan, sophomore attendant, and Dorlisa Martin, freshman attendant. The problems which confronted almost every vacationer and every child forced to go on a perfect vacation: no television, no boys, no conveniences, just boredom. This year’s play starred Gary Randall as Roger Hobbs, Melani Fry as his wife Peggy, and Dorlisa Martin as his youngest daughter Kate. Roger's oldest daughter and his lazy son-in-law were played by Candy Barnes and Rick Randall. The locals of Rock Harbor were portrayed by Stacy Schwaninger and Doug Moses. Other members of the cast included Craig Elv-ing, Michele Whitt, Keith Lewis, Allison Dulaney, Kaye Drake, Mike Camp, and Brent Uebinger. The play was directed by Mr. Joe McCoy with Sue Brandon serving as the student director. Doug Moses, Dorlisa Martin, Melani Fry, Gary Randall, Candy Barnes. Stacy Schwaninger, and Rick Randall, members of the All School Play cast. Musical For many years Mr. Penry has taken the time to organize a musical. This year was no exception. This year’s selection, “Oklahoma,” takes place just prior to Oklahoma becoming a state. Gary Randall and Tammy Harris had the leading roles as Curley and Laurie. Kendal Evans (Aunt Eller), Robbie Bute (Jud Fry), Melani Fry (Ada Annie), Keith Lewis (Will Parker), and Rick Randall (Ali Hakim) showed what they could do as they left the audience laughing. Despite the ups and downs in rehearsals, the show was a huge success thanks to the cast, crew, and Mr. Penry. Melani Fry and Gary Randall Tammy Harris and Gary Randall 50 Sweetheart Dance Even though the FHA-sponsored Sweetheart Dance was held later than its regular Valentine’s Day date, the event turned out to be a big success. “Sweet Dreams, the hit song by Air Supply, was the theme for the dance, and Trick, a band from the St. Louis area, provided music for the evening. Jan Morris was crowned queen of the Sweetheart Dance. Other senior candidates were Kendal Evans and Janet Waters. Attendants were Dorlissa Martin, Connie Banhart, Sherri Haslett, and Pam Sehie. It star'ed with visions of the past wandering around the halls of FHS. Clothes varied from poodle skirts and old letter sweaters to leather jackets and tight blue jeans. There were a few hippies and even a flower child or two. Everyone had a lot of fun chewing bubble gum and swinging ponytails. Later tha night a senior-faculty basketball game was held; a worn-out senior squad walked away tired and weary while the faculty walked off with smiles on their faces. The seniors claim that the refs “had a bad night.” After the game there was a 50 60’s dance with Randy Olson playing records — old and new. Around the close of the dance a Queen Angel and King Angel were to be crowned. It turned out that Tracy Winka (yes, Tracy Winka) got Queen Angel and Rick Randall and Doug Moses tied for King Angel. Tracy was decked out in a dress and high heels while Doug and Rick were twin Karate fighters. The spotlight dance was a little awkward, to say the least, but everyone thought that the titles were well deserved. Before the end of the dance there was a twist contest. There were two couples that the audience couldn’t decide on: Monica Guerrettaz and Gary Whitehead and Nancy Moses and Gary Randall. A “twist-off was held but still the audience was undecided so, again, it was a tie. After the dance we all reluctantly went home — back to the monotony of the 80’s. Oh well, until next year... SBP FHS students once again had the opportunity to listen to and watch the campaigning of five “politicians” during the Student Body President elections. Candidates Melani Fry, Craig Holan, Gary Randall, Randy Hockman, and Mark Winka all did great jobs presenting their speeches, but Gary Randall, with his mafia connections and hit men, won the election. Shelley Stanford, Senior Class President, gave Gary the oath of office the following week. Both Retiring President Bill Flail and Mr. Foreman were awarded with plaques at the assembly. Bill Hall. It was sponsored by the BPW, the Home Ec Department and the Guidance Department. Mrs. Lents and Mrs. Luff are pictured discussing nursing careers with Barbara Colclasure. This year proved to be the most successful yet for the annual Heart Fund Queen Contest, More Than SI600 was raised by the contest for the purpose of fighting heart disease. Seven girls from FHS were among those in the county who placed cannisters at area businesses to raise money for the contest. Jan Morris was named Queen, while Cindy Booth and Susan Winka were named first and second runners-up. respectively. Those involved in the contest were Jan Morris. Besides ending with a 12 win 1 loss record, the group Finished first in the NEC and first at the district meet. Futher-more, the team placed second at the sectional, and thirteenth at the state meet, a spectacular accomplishment. The group also finished highly at several invita-tionals throughout the season. Coach Dulaney sum-morized the feelings of all cross country team members when he said, “The season was very successful and rewarding. The biggest thrill was winning the NEC at Carmi.” Tim Lewis and Mike Burgess 1st row: Ricky Huffman, David Huffman, Herbie Lewis, Bobby Johnson, Craig Holan, Kevin Colclasure, Bobby Wingo, Jeryr Berger; 2nd row: Joe Fathcrce, Tim Lewis, Darin Dunnigan, Steve King, Mike Burgess, Mike Worstell, Coach Dunlaney, Mike Lents, Bob Childers, Randy Hackman, and Darrin Pearce Mike Lents Cross Country team displaying 2nd place trophy from Effingham Invitational 62 Monica Gucrrettaz and Marcic Northcutt Girls’ Tennis The 1981 Girls’ Tennis Team can be described in one simple word, successful. They were beaten only by one team, the ever-tough Centralia. For the second year in a row, the girls were NEC champs. Also, they tied with Olney for the championship at District. The team’s top two players, Monica Guer-rettaz and Marcie Northcutt, combined to make the best doubles team in Southern Illinois. They were seeded First at both the Conference and District, and they captured the doubles title at both of these. “Now, that’s what I call good tennis!” says Coach Talmant. Again this year there were three qualifiers for the State Tournament. Monica and Marcie went for doubles, and Patsy Hoskins qualified for singles. Patsy Hoskins Kelley Kaufman. Candy Phillips, Nikki Gucrrettaz, and Dorlisa Martin Varsity Football Although the varsity football Wolves, coached by Mr. Horst, ended their season with a record of three wins and six losses, the team was considered to be much better than the record shows. Among their close losses was an outstandingly played game against the Aces of Mt. Carmel, who later became the state champions. Several Flora players were awarded with honors at the close of the football season. Among these was Tim Stanley, who was named to the All State 1st team by three newspapers. Darren Sheehan, as well as Tim, was named to the NEC 1st team, and Mark Winka, Scott Daugherty, John Harrison, Guy Brown, Larry Workman, and Yancey Glassford were awarded with 2nd team honors and honorable mentions. Miss Carson commented that her team was inexperienced with only two girls returning from last season. The team consisted of five freshmen, four sophomores, and three juniors, so several members will be back next year. An added attraction at the volleyball games was the freshman sophomore games before the regular junior varsity games. Connie Lewis, Susan Mattox, Libbie Hensoo, and Debbie Powell 1st row: Susan Mattox, Julie Humphrey, Sara Thomas, Barbara Colclasure, Sandy Jackson, Teresa Kittle; 2nd row: Jaide Moore, Connie Banhart, Libbie Henson, Tammy Glassford, Paula Sessions, Debbie Powell, Connie Lewis, and Coach Carson 69 Boys’ Basketball The 1981-82 Basketball Wolves proved that last year's winning season was not just a fluke. In fact, both the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads finished their seasons with better records than last year, with 20-8 and 14-4 win loss records, respectively. The Varsity squad, coached by Tom Welch, ended the season with many honors and accomplishments. Among these were a first place finish at the Carmi Invitational Tournament, second place in the Regional Tournament, and third place in the Van-dalia Christmas Tournament. Perhaps the highlight of the season came at the sold-out game with Lawrenceville, when the Wolves lost by a five point margin to the undefeated Class A State Champions and proved that they were not just an “inept” team from a “hicktown.” Bill Harrell had an outstanding season, as he received “first team” honors for the North Egypt Conference, Carmi Tourney, and Vandalia Tourney. Bill was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Carmi Tournament. Tim Stanley joined Bill on the first team in the Vandalia and Carmi tournaments and was a “second team” selection for the NEC. Darren Sheehan and Mike Burgess were awarded with Honorable Mentions in the NEC. Under the coaching of Rich Porter, the JV squad managed to post at least one victory from every team in the conference, including a win over Lawrenceville, which was only the Indian’s second loss of the year. Mark Winka and Kend Land were named MVP and Most Improved, respectively. Team unity, sportsmanship, and competitiveness are positive factors for this group, which will continue to make Wolves fans proud next year. Basketball FHS proved to have strong basketball teams on all levels as the freshmen and sophomore squads both ended their seasons with outstanding records. The sophomore squad finished with a record of 8 wins and 3 losses. Jerry Berger was named Most Valuable Player, while Bobby Wingo received recognition as the Most Improved. According to Coach Peterson, Considering the number of games lost due to weather, this team improved from the start to the end of the year. The freshmen “A” squad had a 13-4 win loss record and placed second in the NEC Freshman Tournament. Talent was shown to be widespread among the group, which had a total of 17 freshman members. Tom Krutsinger and David Gish were named MVP and Most Improved, respectively. It seems that area teams will once again have their hands full with the Flora Wolves in coming years! The group was chosen last spring by a panel of out-of-town judges. During the summer following tryouts, the cheerleaders sponsored a car wash and attended a camp at which they were honored with many awards. Among these were the spirit stick, the NCA megaphone, and numerous achievement ribbons. The varsity squad added to the list of achievements by winning the super squad award. The hard work and dedication shown by the cheerleaders is obvious when “Wolves’ Fever” is widespread as it has been this year. The group finished the season with a record to be proud of — 9 wins and only 2 losses. The team proved to be exceptionally strong in doubles matches, with the team of Jim Eaton and Tony Luttrell taking both the NEC and District doubles titles and Don Blackwell and Don Clark finishing second in both tournaments. The team hopes to continue its winning tradition next year, when all team members will be returning except seniors Tony Luttrell and Jim Eaton. Karen Ruckman, Editor The destruction of the smoke stack seems to make the end of Building B a reality, especially to those students who spent much of the past four years inside its walls. Likewise, the close of our yearbook signifies the end of the 1981-82 school year. It is my hope that this book illustrates the past year in such a way that you, the reader, will remember this special time not only now, but always. As editor of the Harstan, I would like to thank those people who contributed both time and effort into the making of this book of memories. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Jeanne Hayes, who did a terrific job as Harstan advisor. The 1982 Harstan staff and assistant editor Lori Wheeler deserve credit for the hours spent writing copy, planning layouts, and identifying pictures. The Daily Clay County Advocate Press, Jay Thatcher, and Shelly Rohr gave generously of their time to provide the Harstan with excellent photographs. The biggest thank you, however, goes to you, the reader, without whom this book could never have been completed. If '•
