Versatile Mrs. Spitzner will be a loss in many areas. Students who have sat in her Algebra I and II and Senior Math classes will be surprised to know that Mrs. Spitzner came to Flora High School the second semester of 1959 to finish the year as — Girls' Physical Education instructor, but she has been a math teacher for the past 22 years. Students and faculty alike are aware that Mrs. Spitzner's dedication to our school does not stop at her classroom door; in addition to sponsorship of FHS's two math organizations. Math Club and Mu Alpha Theta, she maintains interest in all school functions: social, drama, music, athletics, and discipline. Her cordial relationship with her students and her colleagues creates a warm atmosphere that a successor will find difficult to duplicate. Some would wonder how such an active person will fill the hours of retirement, but her friends know that countless hobbies consisting of grandchildren, knitting, sewing, cooking, bowling, reading, and camping will adequately suffice. We wish you a happy retirement, Mrs. Spitzner. DEDICATION DEDICATIONS DEDICATIONS DEDICATIONS DEDICATIONS DEDICATIONS DEDICATIONS Kelly Lynn Young Kelly Lynn Young, whose life was cut short in 1980, was an FHA student whose personality and intelligence made him likeable to students and teachers alike. He was a young man characterized by cheerfulness, dedication, and consistency in his behavior as he interacted with peers and adults for two years of high school. He was active in band as a talented drummer and showed his journalistic skills as a feature writer for the Locust Log staff. His sense of humor, optimistic outlook, and varied interests made him a well-rounded, amiable individual who contributed to his school and to his community. As the 1981 school year comes to an end, so, too, does our yearbook. After months of rushed deadlines, unfinished copy, and unidentified photographs, the Harstan staff can now rest easy. I hope that this book illustrates the 198081 school year in the best possible way so that memories made will not be forgotten. I wish the best for the Class of '81 and I hope that each and every one finds their own pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. As editor of the Harstan, I would like to thank those people who made the publishing of this book possible. They are: — leanne Hayes, sponsor — Karen Ruckman, assistant editor — The 198 I Harstan Staff — Dan McCormack, artist — FHS Faculty, for cooperation and information — Norman Phillips, photographer — Charles Sisk, Taylor Representative — and you. the reader, without whom we could never have had all the fun we did putting together this yearbook.
