This year's queen, LeeAnn Rowe, was surrounded by her court which consisted of her escort, Mark Turner; Pam Sehie, freshman attendant, and her escort, Scott Hockman; Susan Knapp, junior attendant, and her escort, Mike Putbrese; Kelley Evans, queen candidate, and her escort, David Boyer, Joey Rinehart (crown bearer), Mandy White-head (flower girl), Janet Beard, retiring queen, and her escort, Mike Picket; Emily Bunnell, junior attendant, and her escort, John Kane; and Lori Wheeler, freshman attendant, and her escort, Darren Sheehan. Colors for the dance were the traditional colors for Valentine’s Day; red, white, and pink, and a false ceiling added to the gym decorations. Events Promises, promises echoed through the auditorium; it was the day of Student Body President elections and the candidates Emily Bunnell, Kent Burgess, John Kane and Stacy Wells had the long-awaited sweaty palms and dry throats. Each of these candidates did a great job of giving his speech, but only one candidate could win — that candidate was John Kane. Mike Randall, Senior Class President, gave John the oath of office the following week. Retiring Student Body President, Doug Slagley, accepted a plaque presented to him by Mr. Rinehart. VI On March 29, ten girls along with business teachers, Mrs. Payne and Mrs. Smith, attended the Eastern Illinois Business Contest at Newton High School. Pam Collins and Karen Ruckman were the only students to place in the contest. Pam placed third in Typing II and Karen achieved a third ranking in Bookkeeping I. Students who attended the business contest: Karen Ruckman, Bookkeeping I, Connie Myers, Typing I, Pam Collins. Typing II. The fans were fixed in their seats cheering their team on during four exasperating quarters. With only seconds left in the game, the seniors were ahead by two points, but John Upton made his way down the court to tie the score and cause the game to go into a three-minute overtime. The faculty was given a second chance to win the game. With each team's final effort, the overtime ended with the score of 60-55 in favor of the faculty. The night had just begun because the dance lay ahead. “Impending Shame’’ with some new members added to the group once again rocked and rolled the evening away. Later the new teen angels, Kim Wilson and Gary Mills, were announced and solo danced to Teen Angel.” From the stroll to the twist, everyone danced until they were tired and exhausted. After the last of the crowd had dispersed, the memories of lipstick, cheering, grease and loud music were left behind them for next year's Golden Oldies Day. 8 9 Guys and Dolls “Guys and Dolls” was presented by chorus on March 28 and 29. The musical centered around a mission leader, Sarah Brown (Rene6 Stanford) who fell in love with a gambler, Sky Masterson (Gary Mills) and Adelaide (Emily Bunnell) the lead singer of the Hot Box Girls who married a gambler, Nathan Detroit (Roger Edmison). Clint Green served as an assistant director to Harry Penry. 10 Events The second annual Career Day, sponsored by the vocational department was held Wednesday, April 16, 1980, in cooperation with Southeastern Career Center and the Flora Business and Professional Women’s Club. Approximately fifty job oriented persons presented information concerning their careers to students from Flora, Louisville, Noble, and Cisne. Representatives from Flora High School in the annual Heart Fund Drive 1980 were as follows: Becky Clement, Linda Martin, Kay Newton, Susan Stanford, Donna Matlock, Janna Dawkins, and Carla Luttrell. Seniors chose these representatives on an open ballot, four from Flora and two from Xenia. Kay Newton now succeeds Kathy Stanley as Clay County Heart Fund Queen. Prom The night had just begun to unfold as the couples were escorted to their tables for the Junior-Senior Prom. Pastel pink, blue, green, and yellow crepe paper, silver and blue fountains and other decorations caught each person’s attention as they made their way. The crowd waited in anticipation for the dance to begin, but the band, Amaritto, prolonged the uneasy crowd a while longer because they were late in setting up. Coronation and the reading of the wills were held at 10:00. To the theme of the Long and Winding Road, retiring queen, Kyra Schroeder crowned the new queen Donna Matlock. Troy Stanley, Shannon Plumlee. Ed Knapp, Becky Clement. Retiring Queen Kyra Schroeder. Mike Randall, Dusty Fatheree 1980 Prom Queen Donna Matlock, Kay Newton. Virgil Yates. Senior Carla Luttrell played “Pomp and Circumstance for the processional and recessional. Rev. Thomas Phelps, the guest speaker for the evening, gave an inspiring address. The following Friday, the climax of four years of high school had finally arrived — graduation. The FHS Band, directed by Harry Penry, provided a half hour concert and played the traditional march as the graduates entered and exited from the gym. After Mike Randall welcomed those present, Salutatorian Pam Gish and Valedictorian Shelly Elving presented their speeches which viewed the decade past and the soar into the 80’s. The senior members of the band played the musical selection, Godspell, as special music for the evening. As the night came to a close the 1980 graduates walked out of the gym with diploma in hand and memories of years past evident in the smiles on their faces. First row: Pam Gish. Because of you we can now rest easy as we finish our pretzels, sip the last of our Coca-cola, and say, “Good-by” to those last minute deadlines. As we take time to look back on this year, we will remember only the happy times, and we will feel the rewards of hard work and dedication; for as you know, not only are we closing the 1980 school year, we are ending our third year as editors of the Harstan. We hope we have accurately illustrated your 1979-80 school year. We wish to thank our staff and especially Mrs. Hayes for putting up with us for a second year. Our existence is one of continuous endings; but with these come constant new beginnings that will make us grateful for what we have had at FHS and fill each drop in our ocean of memories. 128
