1979 Harstan Flora High School Flora, Illinois Volume 58 ; didn't rain! And the game ended in victory for the Flora Wolves Friday night. For the Wolves beat the Aces for the first time in 10 years with the score, 12-8. Burgundy provided entertainment at the Homecoming dance Saturday night to the theme of ' 'Nobody Does It Better. In 3rd place was the sophomores with ' 'We are the Champions,'' followed by the 4th placed freshman float, ' 'Hot Blooded. The FHA came on top in skit competition. Former FHS Spanish teacher, Dorthy Davis, reigned over the parade as the 1978 honorary parade marshall. Juniors sail away with second. Debbie Winka and Lisa Cook working on the sophomore float. ' 'Hey, Seniors are best,'' comments Teresa Mason to Debbie Briscoe and Cathy Phillips. Cheerleaders cheer for a v-i-c-t-o-r-y. Peek-a-boo! From the laughter in halls and the unusual clothes, anyone could tell that 50' s day was here again. That night the Seniors once again tried their best to defeat the Faculty, but they didn't accomplish their goal as the score was Seniors-S3 and Faculty-55. Mr. Upton scored the winning basket in the last few seconds despite the fans cheers for a Senior victory. Mr. Buchanan was top scorer for the Faculty with 18 pts., but Andy McGehee was a tough match as he was top scorer for the Seniors with 19 pts. Next the attention was turned to none other than Impending Shame. What energy the crowd had saved was used to sway to their music. After a few dances and a stroll, the suspense had reached its peak as Lei-sha Fry and Mike Randall were named the 1978-1979 teen-angels. Once again the time had come to turn the clock forward as the night came to a close. The debonair Mr. Baird drove the girls wild dur- Theresa Timm, Carla Luttrell, Sherrie Koehler, Pam Gish, Donna Matlock, and lisa Lane display the new student dress code. Screaming fans flocked in to see the 3rd performance of the indescribable group, Impending Shame. Upton says, ' 'You'll get this ball over my dead body! '' Spencer Cummins was featured in the ' 'Wipe Out'' number performed by Impending Shame. 7 Flora High School students this year decided to 1 'Jog Along With Doug'1 for Student Body President. There were originally five candidates but Doug Slagley, Linda Martin, and Lee Lewis battled it out in the end. The 1978-79 Student Body President Scott Welge finished his reign on May 15, 1979 when Doug was inaugurated in front of the student body by Senior Class President Kathy Stanley. The induction brought an end to Scott's successful year. Scott Welge congratulates the newly elected Student Body President, Doug Slagley. Doug's fans cheer wildly. Lee's campaigners say, ' 'Don't be a plainpocket, vote for Lee . 8 Susan Stanford, Linda Martin, Doug Slagley, Leisha Fry, Lee Lewis, and Bob Briscoe are thinking, Nervous is why you need Soft'n Dry . 4 Dancing to the music of ' 'Mainstreet''. Prom 1979 was a romantic reflection of the song 1 'Reminiscing1'. Couples were escorted into the ce -lestial atmosphere of a midnight blue ceiling highlighted with silver stars and a winking moon. The band 1 'Mainstreet'' provided the music for the evening. Following the reading of the Senior Class Wills by emcee, Randy Olson, ' 'Mainstreet'' Softly played the theme song as retiring queen Nancy Zimmerman crowned Kyra Schroeder 1979 Prom Queen. Shari Schwaninger escorted by Tim Tolliver, Donna Henson escorted by Mike Warren, Kyra Schroeder escorted by Dave Henson, Nancy Zimmerman escorted by John Casolari, Kathy Stanley escorted by Scott Welge, Lisa Lane escorted by Lonnie Murbarger, Linda Martin escorted by Kevin Ray, and Susan Stanford escorted by Jack Erbacher. It was February 22, 1979 and high school students heard over the radio there would be no school for them today. Early that morning vandals had broken into the B building through a kitchen window. They had vandalized the vending machines and tried to set several fires in the cafeteria. Then the vandals made their way to the office where they set another fire. Continuing on their rampage, they set a third fire in Mr. River's room upstairs which damaged Mrs. Spitzner's room, also. Other things had been vandalized as well. The faculty and many high school students spent Friday, February 23, 1979 trying to clean as much as possible the grime and soot from the buildings. When students returned February 28, 1979 after a long weekend due to the fire and an ice storm, there was much more damage than what most of them had suspected. The dismal, smokey odor, new locations for classes, and smoke damaged items were just the beginning. A few weeks after the fire, students were informed that the hallway upstairs of Building B would no longer be used. Then a couple of days before Easter vacation the main hallway of Building B was closed permanently because of a sagging beam holding up the ceiling. Students were rerouted through the small gym and learning center. The P. E. girls were also banned from their locker rooms due to the danger of collapse above them. As of the close of the 1978-79 school year no solutions have been reached as to what will be done for the Flora High School. This is what was left of Mr. River's bookshelf. The vandals left a note on the chalkboard for students as well as a mess in Mr. River's room. The Rotary Club sponsored Frank Mellone this year as an exchange student. Frank is from San Paulo, Brazil and throughout his year's stay he lived with various Rotarian families. Here, Carla Lut-trell and Mr. Coleman welcomes Frank to Flora High Kyra Shroeder was the first girl to win a full athletic scholarship from Flora High School. She will attend Indiana State University in the fall of 1979, where she will play volleyball. Ms. Mary Jo Hill and Mrs. Peggy Rip-perdan look on with Kyra's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Galen Schroeder as Kyra signs her letter of intent. Flora High School offers a two-year course for juniors and seniors which provides work skill in construction techniques. They build a house each year and this year's house was located on Sunset Drive. Classes involved are the Building Trades Class, the Residential Wiring Class, the Drafting Class, and the Interior Decorating Class. Students are also bussed in from different schools. 11 Mrs. Susan Dudley, General Studies teacher, organized Flora High School's first Career's Day. She contacted prominent people from such fields as farming, armed forces, banking, drafting, education, and cosmetology and gathered them together in the gym where students could ask questions in the areas that they were interested. In the Spring of '79, Flora High students from the business classes attended a contest hosted by Newton High School. Fourteen schools participated and of these, Flora placed 2nd. The students who took part in this were: Beth Putbrese, who won first in Typing II, Lorie Conard, who won third in Shorthand I, Denise Williams, who won second in Shorthand 11 and was absent from the picture, Karen Ruckman, Robin Hodges, Theresa Timm, Jennie Forth, Barbara Phillips, Teresa Mason, and Angela Venable, who was absent from the picture. Mrs. Donna Smith and Mrs. Jeanne Hayes accompanied these girls. Every year, Flora High School and Clay City High School hold an exchange day in the spring of the year. This year Doug Slagley, Kathy Stanley, Lee Lewis, Lisa Lane represented Flora at Clay City. Nancy Bryan, Dwaine Milner, Greg Herdes, and Deanna Brant were brought to Flora and assisted through the day by Susan Stanford, Ken Wilker-son, Dave Dulaney, and Stacy Wells. 12 The 1979 Baccalaureate Service was held on May 30, 1979. Mark Burgess, a graduating Senior, played Pomp and Circumstance'1 for the processional and recessional. Angi Warren sang two religious selections accompanied on the piano by Connie Myers. The Baccalaureate Address was given by Rev. George Golay. Junior National Honor Society members served as ushers. The Senior's graduating theme was the International Year of the Child. Saluta-torian Kathy Stanley and Valedictorian John Baird presented speeches elaborating on this theme. Directed by Harry Penry, the FHS Band performed a half hour concert be -fore graduation and played the traditional Pomp and Circumstance for the entrance of the graduates. The special music was the stage band playing two musical selections, both arranged by Senior Dean Randall. 13 Leisha Fry — Math Award Scott Kermicle — Industrial Arts Award John Baird — Social Studies Award Donna Henson — English Award Denise Williams — Business Award Danny Pifer — Science Award Kyra Schroeder — Girl's P.E. This year's band was directed by Mr. Harry Penry. After an excellent summer tour in Florida, the band was ready for its full lists of activities in the 1978-79 school year. As in previous years, the band played for all the home football and basketball games. The band had planned to march in the S.l.U. Homecoming parade, but due to Mr. Penry becoming ill, they were not able to attend the parade. Because the band could not participate in concert band contest, they took a spring tour. Some members participated in solo and ensemble contest held at Olney. To end up the year they played a spring concert and then played at the graduation exercises. The band had a good year. Thinking honestly, what would we do without our faculty, our backbone and example throughout the four years of high school, the authority we live by during the normal day at school? Now in these next few pages are our faculty, the advisors and teachers , who make any future we might pursue possible. Unfortunately, some students don't appreciate these administrators as much as they should, at least not now. But don't despair faculty, they will later!
