1978 Harstan Flora High School Flora, Illinois Volume 57 However cold or hot the season, this year has been one full of memories for all. Remember our traditional rainy Homecoming? Or the Florida trip the band and chorus took? Or what about waiting impatiently for the newly remodeled D. Q. to open? Everyone will remember the 50's sock hop for Randy Ferguson and the long Easter vacation we got (Good Friday?) Sweetheart was a dance to remember, especially for Susan Schwanlnger who got crowned Sweetheart Queen. And remember the drummer in Goliath the band that played at Prom? Looking back over the times of our high school years, think on them and never forget. Coleman Vice Principal Larry Rinehart Student Body Sponsor 5 Innovations Bring Changes Jim Baird - Political Science 1977-78 wasn't just another dull school year at FHS: students received benefits from a variety of innovations ranging from new teaching methods to totally new programs. Heading the list of innovations was the TIPS program, a federally funded project to Improve the probability of success, designed for all vocational students needing help with school work. A work-simulation program, developed by general studies students with a Division of Vocational Rehabilitation grant of $1,000 enabled these students to practice skills needed in jobs such as nursing, secretarial, auto mechanics, etc. grade school science teachers and tried to iron out problems of material duplication. Earth Science was taught at the high school level. For the first time in a number of years, the English Department teaching assignments were so that three teachers had one level each while two teachers picked up the left-overs. The Building Trades ranch-style house, once again, was the combined project of building trades, drafting, woodworking, electricity, and home economics students. Physical Education classes danced everything from the square dances to disco dances. Bill Berry - Industrial Arts, Co-op Another new development was the establishment of a Career Guidance Center at Washington School to serve a twelve-county area. Washington School also housed a placement service to aid students, graduates, and adults In securing part-time or full-time employment In this area. To implement articulation between the high school and feeder schools, the Science Department met with Several classes moved to Washington School this year Including art, math, health, and occupations. Drafting and electricity moved there last year. Art students are especially pleased with the extra space. Special activities of clubs this year included the band's long-awaited trip to Disney World during the summer, funded by thousands of dollars made with numerous projects over a two-year period. While there, the members marched In parades. The phone would ring continuously, papers would be lying all over the office, you could talk in the Learning Center, nobody would write you a pass to your classes; and just think, the administration would have to do their own bookkeeping. Extended over 3 days the festivities started with a Pep Session on Thursday followed by the annual parade. As can be expected, the seniors captured first place with a float entitled Massacre At Heartbreak Hotel . The theme for this years Homecoming activities was A Tribute To Elvis . A newly mentioned activity to the Homecoming activities was a bonfire preluded by a snake dance with competition among classes to collect the most boxes. We might say that if there was a dissappointment in Homecoming weekend, It was on Friday night. In keeping with the season the Flora Wolves failed once again to win In the rain. With 17 seconds remaining in the contest Lawren-ceville Indians kicked a field goal which put the damper on Flora's hopes for a trip to the play-offs. The next night's spirits were high as the students boogied down to the disco sounds of Hot Springs , a band out of Champaign. As Is traditional the attendants were previously picked by the football team. They were: Shannon Plum-lee; freshman, Linda Martin; sophomore, Marsha Warren and Donna Henson; juniors. Exhausted from continuously biting of fingernails; it was finally time for corination. Ginny Sulseberger was crowned queen, while Nancy Zimmerman and Chris Stanford were selected first and second runners-up respectively. As the band was playing the grand finale, everyone was reminising of •jqo the enchanting evening with anticipation of a good night kiss. Homecoming 101 0 Sweetheart Dance You Light Up My Life as it became a popular song, also, was chosen as the theme for the '78 Sweetheart Dance. The retiring queen Marla Raley, returned to crown Susan Schwaninger Sweetheart Queen as Sonn played the theme song. New Queen Susan Schwaninger started her reign with 4 attendants and 2 runners-up to her position. Freshman attendant was Emily Bunnell, sophomore attendants were Rhonda Boyer and Janet Beard. The 3 girls battling for queen were Diane Johnson, Charlotte Cantrell and Susan Schwaninger. Prom I Love You Just the Way You Are This theme carried the Junior-Senior Prom from beginning to end. While Goliath, a band from Terre Haute, provided the music to which Diana Collins, the retiring queen, crowned Nancy Zimmerman, Prom Queen. Donna Henson, Kyra Schroeder and Marsha Warren were the junior attendants assisting Nancy. All the seniors have graduated and what Is left of crowded halls and lunch lines Is only a memory. We have worked all year long to capture the moments and compile the memories of the 1977-78 Into a book that can be tucked carefully away on a shelf and looked back on In years to come; a book we will treasure and hope you will too. This job wasn't done by the staff only. A part of the total production must be a Thank-you to those people who, maybe without even realizing It, contributed part of themselves to this 1977-78 Har-stan ....to Diane Johnson for all her last minute picture taking and developing .... to Norman Phillips, Randy and Danny Plfer for taking pictures for us .... to the teachers for their cooperation on picture day and especially Steve Lee for his help with copy writing .... to the secretaries for all their help with names and for mailing In all the pages .... to Spieth's for their assistance on group pictures .... to Josten's, especially Jerry Bloemer for all his help and Information at our meetings .... to the 619 students in Flora High whose smiling faces are in this book .... and finally to Diane Ecker who did a super job In her 1st year as yearbook advisor. 128 .
