Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1977 volume:

'j ociiiiUvD mmmfiw iiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiHiiiiiiiiii In a world full of people Sometimes we have to wonder-What's it for? All these people Merely strangers talking, Crowding, And swirling about us. Sometimes we feel lost And try to hide In our circle of friends. We hold the known things Close to ourselves And try to forget the future. But we can not. Other times we are confident. We can winj We will conquer, We know ourselves And others will know us, too. People are a part of us And we know that rather Than being alone, We should throw ourselves Into the crowd And join the Swirling, crazy, hypnotic World. But - we don't. Not yet. Now we are loners. During these days we learn To be ourselves. We learn about people In a world full of people. We find ourselves. (Anonymous - 1976) 2 3 JkJkJk On this 1976 Homecoming day the rain fell but Flora's spirits were not dampened. Even though not many people were in the stands at our game that Saturday afternoon, the Wolves still overpowered the Red Hill Salukies 28-0! Many fans sat at home with their radios listening to play-by-play on WNOI radio station and enthusiastically supported their team. 4 6 7 8 9 Queen Jami and escort Dave Henson dance the annual Queen's Dance. Second runner-up Kim Daugherty escorted by Steve Rudy. Miss Jami Erbacher, 1976-1977 Homecoming Queen, and her court. 11 John Upton, 1976-77 Building Trades teacher, heads this year's group of students in the fight to complete the house before its deadline. Features of the house are a comer fireplace, extended kitchen window, and curved driveway. The house, located on Holly Lane, includes three bedrooms, living and dining room, family and kitchen area, and a double garage. Building Trades -Contracting Servicing 14 General Studies Aides To All The General Studies classes have been helpful all around school this year. Activities include building a float for the Homecoming Parade, working in the cafeteria and keeping the Teachers Workroom in tip-top shape. The class of ardent works is instructed by Miss VonBurg. 15 Math And Health Integers? Theorems? Circular functions??? These are a few of the terms that can be heard in the math classes at FHS. Students incur such terms as they progress from General Math, Algebra I, Geometry, and on to Math IV. Health classes taught by Mr. Miglin were aided this year by student teacher Miss Julie Nesbit. Subjects ranged from the study of the structure and function of the human body to a complete study of human sexuality. Science . . . A Complex World? Everything from clay mountains to dissecting frogs.. .that is what our natural sciences offer us today in this world in which we live. Science has changed our society in many different ways. It is a means of providing simplicity in a complex world. The use of the lab helps students to understand the hows and whys of science. 17 Music Art An Outlet For Creativity Directed by Mr. Penry, the band has had a very active year. In order to finance a trip to Disney World next year, the band has undertaken several fund-raising activities. To gain experiences for the coming event, the band was scheduled to play for various other functions: including a trip to SIU last fall. The art classes, under the direction of Mr. Phillips, gained creative experiences by making hand-painted charm bracelets and experiencing a turn at the pottery wheel. 18 Avenues Of English No one ever completely masters the English language, because it contains millions of new and exciting aspects. One of the ways FHS students attempt this task is through the experience of writing. Another avenue of English to be explored is literature which opens a world of imagination, fantasy and reality. 19 Practicality Is The Key . . . Headed by Mrs. Mary Beth Stine, the Home Economics department offers many useful talents to be acquired by students here at FHS. Mrs. Burgess and Mrs. Martin also assist in teaching such classes as Orientation to Foods, Sewing, Child Care and Orientation to Fashions. Among the many classes offered by the Agriculture department include Small Engine Repair, Welding, Soil Management, Plant Science and Animal Science. Lead by Mr. Bob Wheeler, the Ag department offers valuable resources to all students who participate. 20 Business Careers Our economy fluctuates on the business in this era. This department trains FHS students to become better equipped to tackle the business world by learning such skills as typing, filing, shorthand, accounting and various office machines. 21 Forensics U.S. History - Which Is The Real Debate Class? Between queasy stomachs and a bad case of the stutters, the debate must go on. Miss Chao, adviser of the Debate class also works with the General Studies class this year. What can I say? is Mr. Talmont's famous quote. As a teacher of the Junior U.S. History class, he teaches his students to tackle a rough road. Mr. Baird is not only talented with such classes as U.S. History, but also instructs Social Problems and Political Science. 22 Mr. Paul Birk Guidance Office And Learning Center Provide Informational Service For All Students The Guidance office not only provides educational information, but also occupational information as well, for FHS students. The use of the Guidance Office for these types of counseling is ever-increasing as the student asks himself what he wants from life and how he can best achieve that goal. The Learning Center, under the supervision of Mr. Wagner, is constantly overseeing the necessary informational needs of students at FHS. All of this together hopefully will make life a bit easier for all of our hard-working students. Mrs. Joann Stanford Mrs. Nancy Clark 23 Mr. Dale Wagner Mrs. Marilyn Staples Administration Sets Standards Of Excellence Education would be extremely difficult without an administration to keep everything running smoothly. Plenty of time, thought and energy is involved in planning the organization and administration of our school system. You can be sure, that with every decision these people make, the welfare of the student is kept topmost in mind. Mrs. Peggy Claypool, Unit Secretary. FHS is extremely proud of you all! Diane Hemphill goes up against a North Clay opponent. For girls' sports this year, volleyball has been quite a thrilling and exciting event. The season started out with a daily routine of exercise and drill. Many girls found their skills challenged and strengthened after many games before realizing that they were a mighty and powerful team. The J.V. team consisted of Linda West, Glenda West, Lori Goff, Tina Walters, Lei-sha Fry, Donna Henson, Nancy Zimmerman, Mel Bonnell, Tammy Haslett, and Cindy Deain. These girls ended the season with a great record of 10-4. The Varsity squad can be extremely proud of a job well done. The team consisted of twelve members: Kyra Schro-eder, Lisa Lane, Mona Etch-ison, Ginny Sulsberger, Sharia Snyder, Sharon Holland, Diane Hemphill, Diana Gill, Carla McGrew, Norma East-in, Amy Phillips, and Jane Grubaugh. As the competition got tough, so did these seemingly unbeatable twelve who held an 18 match winning streak. Among other victories, they captured first place at both the Harrisburg Invitational and the District Tournament here at FHS. Advancing still farther they went on to take top honors in the sectionals at Albion. This last achievement paved the way on to Carbondale and the Super Sectional. Despite every effort possible, Flora lost to Belleville, thus ending a fine team effort and dashing hopes to reach the state finals. The team ended a superb season with a record of 22-4. The girls are presented the first place trophy by Mrs. Ripperdan, Girls Athletic Coordinator. Not Pictured: Barbara Phillips. AND SO... the memories of these people pass through the years and there truly are times that we wonder.. .What's it for? But all through this 1976-77 school year these individuals aren't quite the strangers they used to be. It has been one more happy, memorable year that we have learned to live, share, and be ourselves in a world full of people. The staff extends their most sincere thanks to: .... Mr. Jack Thatcher for furnishing much time and many photos. ... .Tom and Nancy Cocagne who helped us select type, covers, etc. and advised us on layouts. ... .Norman Phillips for taking and developing loads of pictures. ... .Randy Blaine who helped take more pictures. ... .Mrs. Cleta Dulaney, Mrs. Betty Erbacher and all the other office workers for supplying pencils, erasers and information. ... .Mr. Dale Wagner for providing camera equipment. .. .Mr. Steve Lee who gave us much advice. ... Dios Misenhimer who kept us warm and provided good company. . ..Miss Jane Stallard who is a fantastic advisor! ... .To the students who made this year a great year for the FHS HARSTAN. 124
