Sponsor; Carolyn Marley Treasurer; Bill Shaffer. President; Murray Langston, Vice President; Gerald Clingenpeel, Secretary. I remember starting off my junior year in a whirl. Money was the only thing in our minds since our treasury was deflated at that time. For money-making projects we had a car wash at Berkey’s Dairy, a sale of memory books, and our play A Lucky Penny. Play practice took up many study nights, but we later agreed it had been worth it. Keeping secret the how's, when's, where’s, and why’s of the prom was a big task. 30 Jane Adams Max Allen Jerry Berkey Frances Burnham Joe Clawson Gerald Clingenpeel Sonia Cook Don Collins Mary Ann Cripe Wilma Disinger Sharon Garrison Bud Jackson Madonna Jordan Murray Langston Jim Lyons Carolyn Marley Georgia McKinley Louanne McKinley Tom McKinley Raymond Murphy Carolyn Pope joy Marion Riggle, Jr. Bob Ryan Marthena Schenck Nancy Schnieb Mary Jo Scott Bill Shaffer Mary Jo Thompson Larry Ward Nancy Wilson Missing—Judy Pitzer 31 The class heads: David Reeve, Sponsor; Eddie Angle, Vice President; Jerry Fouts, President; Deanna Pressler, Treasurer; Brenda McKinley, Secretary. ing and Queen of Basketball, Jerry Fouts and Joyce Bur n, reign over the dance held in their honor. Patty Flora, 54, was one of four Sunshine members in the state who won a four-year nurse s scholarship. We w'ere very honored that an F. H. S. student won this awrard. We sold Christmas cards for a money-making project and had charge of the concessions at the noon hour and home ball games. At Christmas instead of exchanging gifts, we sent our money to the Riley Hospital and had a grab bag for ourselves. Upper: Janet Berkey places a candle at formal initiation. Lower: Blind-folded freshmen try to pop balloons the hard way. 49 I remember my junior high years as a Sun Ray member. We worked hard under Mrs. Murphy’s sponsorship to fit ourselves to become Sunshine members. Our programs included talks by Mrs. Charles Dumond, Mrs. Amelia Haimes, and Mrs. Robert Julius; a movie on manners; and a Christmas party. To help in the polio drive, we sold crutches on a Saturday in February. This was the first year that we have been recognized as a state organization by the Sunshine Society. Due to our high scores as a team in the county contests, we were eligible to enter the District Poultry and Egg Contest and the Crop Judging. One of our members applied for the Hoosier Farmer degree in F. F. A, For projects we did some soil testing and studied farm improvement at some of our members' homes. We sold gas and household articles, had an eating stand at the fair, sold magazine subscriptions, had a ham and bean supper, and received generous donations. We led the Halloween parade in a cold wind—and brother, was it cold! We played at pep sessions, home basketball games, in the Spring Festival at Camden, and finally at Commencement. Our annual spring concert provided a good opportunity to show off our new uniforms. Upper: Wash until you see the whites of their eyes was our motto as we earned money for band uniforms. CBoos er GfuS I remember our Booster Club and the many pep sessions we had before ball games to boost our team’s morale. Encouraged by the cheerleaders, we yelled our loudest and learned many new yells and songs. We piled into buses (and nearly went broke paying bus fare) and traveled long miles on snowy nights to out-of-town games. We wore white shirts and blouses to conference games and did our best to back the team, to uphold good sportsmanship, and to keep school spirit high. i Upper: We go wild when the going gets rough. Lower: Boss-man turns yell leader for the day. Bernadine Patrick, David Whipple, Sue Shope, Jimmy Eller, and Pauline Peterson salute the flag. I remember the impressive flag-raising ceremony at home games. While the band played The Star Spangled Banner,” the majorettes and two scouts came to attention. A new flag was given to the school by Rex Day. The cheerleaders worked hard to keep our spirits high and did their best to support the teams at all times regardless of the score. One of our favorite yells was: There's a reason to buy; there’s a reason to sell; There's a‘ reason why every Badger should yell. So shout, Badgers, shout HALLELUJAH! We were a confident and well-coached team, and we all worked hard to prove it so by winning the first four games. Then we met with one of the oldest rivals of the Badgers—Logansport. The game was a thriller all the way. Though we led until the final seconds, we lost by two points—and was it a hcartbrcaker! We traveled to West Lafayette and saw the second defeat which lost us a chance for the conference title. We finally got back into the winning streak, coming out on top in the next ten games. We won the Holiday Tourney at Camden for the second consecutive year by defeating Forest and Mulberry in two close games. We went home with a fine-looking, well-deserved trophy. Our only defeat in our own gym was by our bitter rival, Sheridan, in a nip and tuck battle. 56 Left to right: Jerry Jenkins, Student Manager; Kearns, D.
