was very limited. Then in 1928, Flippin High School was established on the same foundations as the present school. During that time the Flippin Bulldogs (Boy's team) and Cardinals (Girl’s team) had very fine basketball teams, which many times went to the State Tournament. In 1951 the school and gymnasium burned down and the new Flip- pin School was built. Labor and lumber were donated by the maintenance shop in Bull Shoals when the dam was be- ing built. Flippin is now a growing thriving town. It is proud of its good schools, airport, water system, and progressive plans for the future.

Flippin was named for W. B Flippin who settled near where the Flippin Airport is now located. He came from Hopkins County. Kentucky in 1821. During this time there was a small band of Delaware Indians located at the “Big Indian Spring” whose chief was called Johnny Cake and had a great mill near this spring. There were no trees ex- cept around Rock Springs Hollow. A few Shawnee Indians lived at Yell ville, but later other white settlers came and the Indians were moved out in 1828. This place was called Goatsville, which was in Searcy County in 1838. Legend has it that a traveling salesman called on “Uncle Jim Jackson” who had a general store, flour mill and cotton gin. The salesman had not been very successful in selling the old goat any merchandise and started back to his hack in a rather vile mood. To add to his woes one of Mr. Jackson’s goats took a running tackle at the seat of his pants just as he boarded the hack. Thereafter, the enraged salesman’s title of “Goatsville” stuck. Around 1850, the settlers of the growing community were unhappy with the name; so in honor of their first settler they called it Flippin Barrens. T)o lipnin Mail was delivered twice weekly during the Civil War and before 1869 there was no post office. During this time there were many hardships. Marion County bordered on Missouri and during the Civil War was on a cross firing line - sometimes on one side and sometimes on the other; however, the worst degredations were committed by bad men. not in the regular armies. These men would make raids on the people of their former homes, and this grew worse near the close of the war. During the spring of ’65. people ate anything that would sustain life; some starved to death. People mostly ate things that they could find growing, for there were no guns to hunt game. About 1873, a local grange was organized in Flippin Barrens to keep law and order in the area. In 1904 the railroad came and missed the town by about three-fourths of a mile. As might be expected, a smart real estate salesman saw the possibilities of a town at the railroad. The Marion County Land Co. came into existence and twenty acres, where the City of Flippin now stands, was bought, surveyed, and laid out in town lots. A public auction was held and the town of Flippin was born. The town was incorporated in 1921, with the first mayor being James M. Keeter. In the early part of Flippin’s history, there were many small schools in the area like Mtn. View. Number One. and Rea Valley, all of which later consolidated with Flippin. The first Flippin school was located on what is now near the intersection of Fallen Ash road and Hwy. 178. This school only went through the eighth grade and training 4

John Parker 1 Capt. .John Parker uttered those words as the colonial militia under his command prepared to meet the British troops at Lexington Those works and the painting—Spirit of '76—exemplify the dedication and determination of the American patriots in their fight for independence. The colonies had organized to express their grievances in an effort to resolve the differences within the framework of the Empire. Several of the colonial legislatures had instructed their delegates to the Con- tinental Congress in Philadelphia to oppose any move toward in- dependence. The movement for independence was gaining strength and following the publication of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, which argued for colonial sovereignty, a resolution was adopted and a committee of five appointed to draft a declaration of independence. 2 General Washington, who had been appointed commander-in-chief of American forces by the Second Continental Congress, was a brilliant military strategist. It was his decision to take his Continentals across the Delaware River on Christmas night which resulted in the first ma- jor colonial victory. That victory at Trenton over Hessian mercenaries gave the ragged army renewed vigor. Supported chiefly through the printing of Continental currency, the colonial army also went through the personal fortunes of many American patriots—among them Washington, Jefferson, Richard Henry Lee and John Adams. These fortunes were donated to the cause of liberty—a cause supported by about one-third of the American population which was near 2,000,000. Another one-third remained loyal to the English crown and the remainder were apathetic. Despite many defeats, the colonies managed to keep an army in the field as a symbol of American resistance, to guarantee a negotiated rather than dictated peace.
