ls.8.8 academia 1 Vol. 12 Flnt. Ml 48505 Title 1 our times. These are the times of your life. You've heard that one before But if you really think about it. that old clich6 holds a lot of truth. The people you meet, the classes you take, and everything else you do in high school are going to affect you for the rest of your life Remember the first football game you ever went to? It rained a little that day, but who cares - we won. You can't forget that 2 Theme first goal you scored for the soc- cer team Then there was the time that the guy you had a crush on for half the year asked you to dance. You have to smile when you think of the time you and your best friend laughed until you couldn't even breathe, now you can't even remember the joke These are the good times - times you couldn't forget even if you tried. It's your very first day at the Flint Academy. You're trying to find your first hour, what did your schedule say — room 212? You can't remember if your home- room teacher said the even num- bered classrooms were this way or that way .... All of a sudden it's the first day of your senior year. Seeing the lost look on some of those seventh graders' faces really brings back some memories. You can't decide whether to laugh or pity them. Everything has changed — the way you look, talk, act, your opinions, your goals. These are the fast times at the Flint Acade- my. Don't even blink, you could miss something 4 Theme Theme 7 Every year is unique in your memory. Everyone will see this year in a different way. This may have been your favorite year. Then again, it might have been just an average year. No matter how you saw it, this year will nev- er be repeated; these memories will never be replayed Things will change in your life; you'll never go back. These are the good times, the fast times, but most of all these are our times. 10 Spring Happenings LEFT Mchete Seymour and Paxton McDerrrod particpatng in the prom festivities at the University of Michigan Balroom FAR LEFT Vanita Wamble and Donovan Ptamondon at the t g senior event of the year ABOVE Ta Da1 Michoe) Gons surprises Lauri Webb with a classic ride to the prom on May 22nd ABOVE Students take their last look □round the school before they begin jummer vacation Spring Happenings 11 s. i Williamsburg: A Memorable Experience On Tuesday night, six p.m., April 28, a group of Juniors and Seniors from Ms. Harris' and Mr. Wiltse's classes packed their bags and headed East. Their destination: Williamsburg, Virginia, where they spent five days touring one of the first settlements in America. While there, they visited the Governer's Palace, the Court House, the jail, and the Magazine in Colonial Wil- liamsburg They also visited Cart- er's Grove Plantation on the James River However, the trip wasn't memorable just for the places vis- ited The group enjoyed shop- ping in the Williamsburg Plaza and the afternoon spent at Busch Gardens. The hotel antics and the bus trip also left unforgetta- ble memories in each vacation- er's mind. OPP PAGE. TOP Dallas Lenear and Jeff Lilord get a little closer to tour guide. Kay Smith OPP PAGE. C.. they didn't know the kind of excitement that awaited them Mr. Davidek and Mr Cybulski chaperoned forty students on a trip that they will never forget. Why? Mr. Davidek and his group were invited to the Soviet Embassy. There, he received a personal message and an autographed book from a representative of Mikhail Gorbachev. That wasn't the only excitement. Even though it was cold and rainy, the group toured the city, its monuments, museums, and other places of interest. A highlight was visiting the U. S. Naval Academy in Annap- olis. After the trip, everyone was worn out, tired, and cranky, but all agreed that they had one of the best times of their lives. 14 Washington D C. However, the 1987 Flint Academy Eagles' season proved to be a real breakthrough compared to past years The season ended with nine wins and nine losses. This record was attributed to the intense spirit of the team and a new coach, Joe Curtis. Mason Fournier re- ceived the Eagle of the Season Award and Steve Novak attained the Silent Leader of the Year Award. The Eagles had fun on and off the field all season and ended it with a picnic in Ballenger Park. 16 Baseball FA Opponent 7.1 Northwestern 1.9 2 Holy Rosory 8 3.2 Bentley 4.3 6,14 Beecher 1.2 11,13 Valey Oiristian 3.3 5.2 Dryden 0.4 5 North Branch 3 8 Hamady 6 5 Bentiey 15 Northern 4 7,5 I 5 Nyrth Branch .yt 0 Bentley 6 - ' ' TBfc Record 9-9 w UPPER LEFT 1987 Baseball Team FRONT ROW Frank Franklin. Kenyatta Douglas, and Coach Brim The 1986-87 Girls' Softball Team, even though they only won one game, put forth great effort and determination. Jenni- fer Lam, who was named most valuable player, socked 31 hits, scored 10 runs, and drove in a team leading 9 RBI's. Crystal Gray was another outstanding contri- butor; she struck out 82 oppo- nents and offensively slammed 2 home runs. Coach Brim, had only good things to say about his team, especially Jennifer Lam. The 4-9 record shows that life wasn't easy for this squad. Soccer requires all- out stamina and 100% concen- tration With a small number on the team, the forty minute halts were tough on the players. No rest for the weary! The highlight of the season had to be the 4-1 victory over Bay City after a past defeat by the same team. The 6-2 defeat caused by Southwestern's strong offense was the low point of the season. The two MVP's, Becky Haughey and Erika Nunn were tough competitors. Margie Haughey, the rookie goalie was awarded Most Improved Player. Linda Ringiein was named Eagle of the Season. Good show ladies! Girls Soccer 19 FA. ODDOnent 6 Atherton 1 7 Fenton J.V. 0 7 Mt. When we say Tennis: the perfor- mance comes through. no other phrase could describe the Academy's 1987 Tennis Team any better. For the most part, it was the best perfor- mance in the team's past record, combining all the players to form the ultimate team. Their competative spirit and winning determination became quite evident through the remarkable season Creating this force was no easy task, however, all those grueling practices payed off as the Eagles proved to be unbeatable with their no loss season The most valuable player. Phil Krueger, pulled the team through by winning many single matches Krueger, also the most experienced player, worked and taught other team mem- bers The team's collected victories qualified them for regionals, which from there they proceeded to win four matches in the State Finals to take second place Of course, none of this could have been possible without coaches. Mr. Bateman and Mr. Hoskins, who put in many hard hours of work. In return, they were well paid off with the 1987 Tennis Team's record setting sea- son 1987 Tennis Team members: Singles- Phil Krueger. Les Smith. It is something that could make or break a team. The 1987 Boys' Track Team lacked team experience, but still managed to have a successful season The Eagle thinclads placed fifth out of twelve teams at the Bulldog Relays held at Bentley High School. As the season pro- gressed, they improved by placing fourth at the New Lorthrop Relays The team also earned the privilege of being second at the relays held in Ithaca, Michigan. The highlight of the season was the State Finals Ulysses Burns, Earnest Jones, Phillip Johnson, and Dwayne Hollins, placed among the leaders in the 880 me- ter relays, and the 440 meter relays. Lashotne Melton prepares for the take-off Success, due to determination, is perhaps the best way to describe the 1987-88 girls track team. Thats how Jo Bragg, who was a notewor- thy inspiration to the team, viewed the season. This years girls track team wasn't successful in winning meets, yet they were determined to give it their best. Only two members of fhe feam, Pafricia Hoskins and Nemecia Bush, made it to the State Meet at Kala- mazoo. At the state meet Patricia went on to the semi-finals, buf failed to make the finals. Nemecia Bush placed eighth in the finals. Coach Anthony Brown commented that Although the team consisted of a lot of young girls, overall it was a good season. This may seem like a long time to many, but Miss Curtis sincerely liked her work. It's ... just the joy of helping young people attain success in whatever their goals are, she explained. Dean Whitely had only good things to say about Miss Curtis. He stated. She was one of the most dedicated and sincere educators I have ever known. She was never too busy to work with or help a young person. Miss Curtis always has excellent school spirit. She could always be spotted at footballs or basketball games. The students who were under her guidance were indeed fortunate. We will miss her The Flint Academy, and in particular the Social Studies Department, suffered a severe setback with the recent forced retirement of Mr. Lloyd Bateman. The retirement was the result of a heart transplant that occurred last summer. Mr Bateman has fully recovered, but was forced to retire because of career considerations. The World History program will sorely miss his expertise and his humorous anecdotes. His illness has not kept him from a continued loyalty to our program — he is active with the Ski Club and the Tennis Team We all wish him health and happiness in all his endeavors. Girls' Volleyball team finished the season with an overall record of 16 wins and 23 losses, including fourth place in the Flint Winter Games. Why? Coach Shirley Luckadoo answered this by saying that the team was much slower this season Even though their overall scores didn't show it. the girls were out- standing competitors. Pamela Hussey was the Most Valuable Player The Most Improved Players were Angela Patrick and Monica Smith. Andrea Patrick had the highest serving scores with 103 good serves, followed by Lynn MacDonald with 79, and Carmen Evans with 78. Unfortunately for the skiers. Mother Nature did not cooperate and provided very little snow. This did not discourage the club because they still hit the slopes in large numbers. They skied weekly at Mt. Holly and participated in the annual trip to Sugarloaf in January. Although the weather conditions were usually unfavorable, this was one group that toughed it out and still man- aged to have a great time RIGHT Ji Bruckman is happy to hit the slopes at Sugarloaf Mountain BOTTOM Kathy Duton and Jett Anteli are enjoying each other's company in the lodge TOP After a long day of skiing.
