By past experience, we know that being a Flint Academy Eagle takes hard work and lots of spirit. Remember back in August when you got your first textbook? Well, that was only the beginning; it won't end until that glorious day that is affectionately called âThe Last Day of School! But whatâs in between the start and the finish? How about that beautiful shot at the buzzer that won the basketball game for us or that pop quiz in geometry that you passed with flying colors? 2 Theme Tv .-b rSElnHsl urtD Ixcnnfil it t (° yj 'f hCvTL iSE T.s-vn L fe(9i iO - uuTtUUi tft mTLr ji -rvnf ----- jinn tf. Or maybe, just maybe, it was that moment when you realized that all of your hard work and endless nights of last-minute cramming for all of those tests, which you should've studied for a week earlier, were going to pay off. All throughout this school term, we knew something at the Academy was different, special. A feeling of pride and spirit has enveloped the school and itâs just what helped us survive this year. Fila is a major status-seeking symbol for the teens Another popular status symbol is sporting chains lots a them People nowadays festoon enough gold chains with charms and emblems to make Mr T green with envy But lately, people are getting more clever by resorting to silver chains. At about one-third of the cost of gold, people can sport three silver chains at the price of one gold chain and there- fore look classier Gaining class, after all, is what these trends are all about Darnell Cabell sports his Fila shirt and silver chains with style. Chris Jackman, Ameer Rutherford. When my jolly friend, Bob, the illustrious co-editor of our too-wonderful-for-words type of yearbook, approached me and asked me to write an article of some type about the High School Challenge Team, I was shocked. For those of you who know me well, you're probably aware of the fact that I possess one of the most abnormally- twisted imaginations on the face of the earth. So I ask you, what should I say? First, I must give my own personal opinion of the Quiz Bowl. Essentially, it is a contest be- tween each school squadsâ four biggest geeks that they could fine (I can say that because I am one of them). They dress us in clothes that have that âturn of the century look and expect us to answer questions that nobody with rational thought patterns would take time to consider. This is, of course, just my opinion. You must remember that I am a pessimist. Next, I must coment on the tremendous amount of pres- sure that weâre under. You must take into consideration that we are on television being asked questions by a man that could be considered to rather dull and lacking in charisma. This causes us to have certain anxieties. These anxieties stem from years of rules, regulations, and dress codes â so you can blame me for succumbing to the urge to say and or do something extremely stupid? Iâm on a panel with three of my comrades: Mike The Man Moore, Chris âThe Abacusâ Jackman, and the infamous Thom Nealssohn. What you have here is a perfect oppor- tunity to make your school look extremely stupid. With hot lights baking the back of my neck, I can feel the tension of the entire studio being focused on me, when all- of-a-sudden, âBAM!â, the urge strikes. I could say just about anything I wanted to â I could recite a few lines of verse that I penned concerning our Presi- dent's prostate gland. I could break into a lyric poem about Elvisâ untimely death. I could use terminology, phrases, and northside idioms that would make those little gray hairs on the top of Mr. Whiteley's head stand straight up in amazement. But I donât. Only someone who has known and seen perversity in its purest form can hope to restrain himself from this great beast we call The Urge. -J.B. Johnson Our tearless leaders. Advisor Mr. John Davidek. da joined the staff in January of this year Have you ever walked info a classroom at the beginning of the year and just knew something was different? When Mi- chele and I walked into the yearbook room late in August, we should have walked out right then and never came back. Why? Let me describe the situation. We had been aban- doned by our Advisor Dale Cyran (Hello, Northern) and in his place sat an unseasoned rookie, Mr. John Davidek. Now don't get me wrong-we actually chose Mr. D the year before to be our fearless leader. But what we didnât realize was that we would have to train him right along with the new recruits! I mean, putting together a yearbook, with no advisor, no orga- nization, and only four returning staff members for all of the school to see would make anyone want to run and hide. But we didnât - why? We donât know. Somehow, Mr. Davidek emerged as the most innovative and rational-minded year- book advisor that the Flint Academy has ever seen. Our young staff, mostly of girls who didnât know the difference between a yearbook and a Cosmopolitan, banded together and gave their full effort. Photography was better than ever, and the pictures were the final proof. Thanx gang - youâre beautiful! You cannot ever be replaced and we love you. Hope you liked the 1987 Academia. Thank you for your support. God bless. -In his matchless name, Bobby Cooper, Co-editor Here he is - Mr Davidek! The Junior Varsity Football Team ended its 1986 season with a record of one win, four losses. The Eagles started out by destroying Ha- mady 44-0. It was a positive beginning, but a lack of momentum caused them to bow to the next four opposing teams. A lack of abili- ty to change from junior high to high school football was given as one of the reasons for the upsetting record. Leading the team was Marcel Nadir, who gained 173 yards in rushing, a new J.V. re- cord. Most Valuable Player was Armond Sin- gleton. The Eagles are led by Coaches Wil- liams and Cisco. 1986 J.V. But when you are returning to your former high school where your dad is the dean, it could also be a lot of fun. Jeff Whiteley and his boys' soccer team had fun while also posting a four win, eight loss record. These four victories were the first in the two year history of Boysâ Soccer at the Academy. A fresh, young roster, led by co-captains Glen Keely and Ameer Ruth- erford won their first two games of the sea- son. The squad greatly improved over last yearâs team. Coach Whiteley is a valuable asset to the Academy athletic coaching staff and should be commended, along with the rest of the team, for a job well done. 54 Boys' Varsity Soccer LEFT: Ameer Rutherford skillfully moves the ball away from three opposing players. Young Team - No Districts Every year, something happens that gets put down in the record books. In past years, it's been assists, rebounds, or championships. This year marks a rather unpleasant re- cord. The Varsity Girlsâ Basketball Team completed its first losing season in Academyâs history, with a final record of nine wins, ten losses. According to Coach Lloyd Nichol- son, âIt was the youngest varsity team that I have ever coached. That, along with inexperience, was attributed to the Lady Eaglesâ demise. The seasonâs biggest thrill and worst moment were only a game apart-the thrill being the victorious district semifinal, and the worst moment being the loss in the championship. Girls Varsity Basketball Size Is The Name Of The Game Ladies Lack Numbers Clif Turner and his young ladies of basketball held together until the end, but all of their efforts were not enough for a winning season. The J.V. Girls Basketball Team ended 1986 with a record of four wins and eleven losses. A lack of numbers was one of the reasons given by Coach Turner for the squadâs situation. There were only six members on the whole team, so going to the bench for support was out of the question. Despite this, the girls were able to win a game against Holy Rosary with only three Eagles remaining on the court. This yearâs Most Valuable Players were Kim Mitchell and team captain Pam Hussey. Once again, the Varsity squad put it all together for a fourteen win, four loss regular season record. A dominating powerhouse on the court was senior Keith Nelson, who led all scorers with a 21 point average. One area coach said. He (Nelson) made some moves that defied gravity!â Keith also shared the rebound record with Karl Petrich; each had a five-per-game average. The 1987 Flint Academy Ski Club has had a great ski season this year. The new beginners learned quickly under the ad- vanced members' supervision. Mt. Holly seemed overwhelming to the beginners. Many attempting to challenge the slopes were faced with little problems such as running over skis, into people, and even into trees. As for the so-called âpros , they also faced many challenges such as teaching new skiers, conquering new hills, and earning advanced patches. The ski weekend at Crystal Mountain completed the ski season. The trip provided new experiences, new hills, and a great time. Mr. Robson and Mr. Bateman accepted the responsibility of keeping the club in line; they also found time to enjoy the slopes with the skiers.
