McClellan Flint, Michigan 1986 Theme 1 In 1976 the Old Northern opened its doors as the Flint Academy. Ten years later the identity of the Flint Academy is firmly established and well known. This identity includes a strong commitment to traditional educational values. Ten years of meaningful growth - a real rea- son to celebrate! Celebrate Theme 3 Celebrate We have prepared this 10th Anniver- sary edition of the Academia to display the identity we have developed over the past decade. Citizens of Flint have come to know the Academy as a school that is committed to education. The school may be smaller, the rules may be stricter and the grading system may be tougher than other high schools in Flint, but it is all part of our learning atmosphere. We love it here - a real reason to celebrate! 4 Theme Spring '85 Pre-Party Preps Spring is here and it's a time to celebrate! Enthusiasm and participation in Spring activi- ties has been immense since their inception in 1978. Eight years ago, only three sports were offered in the Spring. Presently, Spring activi- ties include five sports as well as the Talent Show, Prom and various Spring Trips. This year also marks the first year in which girls' soccer has become a Varsity sport in Flint. Academy's Alive in '85 and ready to cele- brate! Celebrme Spring '85 7 The 1985 freshman class trip to Washington D.C. was once again an extreme- ly enjoyable and educa- tionally profitable time for both the students and the sponsors. The trip, April 25th through April 30th, was taken by 40 history students and 4 sponsors at a total cost of $245.00 per student. That price was lowered for each individual who sold citrus fruit. The students experienced a worthwhile trip as they visited the Washington Monument, the F.B.I. Building, and the U.S. Mint. The tour of our na- tion's capitol was high- lighted by a cryise down the Potomac River. Resting between tourist attractions are LaWanda Davis, Marie Jones, Wanda Howard, and Karla Barnett. Tim Varner starts out the morning with a smile. 8 Spring '85 Nadine Warner cools off with an ice cream. Trips Bring Fun-Filled Memories Barbara Cook and Janine Busha take time to enjoy Boston s beautiful scenery. Tawana King waits patiently for Michigan Trailway to arrive Pamela Cox and Jonathon Mateen take time to pose for a picture beside Prince Hall's tombstone. Students relax after a long day of touring. The 1985 trip to Boston proved to be exciting and educational. Thir- ty-four enthusiastic students along with three chaparones departed from the Academy Tuesday, April 30, returning Saturday, May 4. The trip included two tours to such places as Newport, Rhode Island, Salem Mass., and an exciting cruise. The Boston trip was funded by the students' annual sale of cit- rus fruit. These sales lowered the original cost of $230.00 according to the amount of fruit sold by each individual student participating in American Literature and U.S. His- tory classes. This trip turned out to be a great success and quite an en- lightening experience for those who participated. Spring '85 9 Students Display Their Talent j'J' Imitating Fat Boys is Dante McGee. Flint Academy's fourth annual talent show turned out to be another success! The talent show consisted mostly of singing and dancing with a fashion show put on by the seniors during intermission. Entertain- ing the audience with several songs including their original, Sorry Girl , the Orr Brothers Band won first prize of $75. AJC, a break dancing group, moved their way to a second prize of $50. Another dance group, the Electros, came in third place winning $25. There were a total of twenty-six acts and all should be commended for a job well done. The show was a great success. Total earnings, $1766, helped pay for the senior prom. Special thanks goes to Ms. Moss for supervising the show. It was held at the University Club on May 10, lasting from 7:00 to 12:00. The prom started off with social hour followed by dinner. After dinner, the seniors enjoyed themselves by dancing with music provided by DJ Chris Maroun. Prom 11 1985 Flint Academy Varsity Baseball. Back Row: Scott Miller. The Eagles' wins came on three from Holy Rosary and one each from Northwestern, Hamady, and Saginaw Buena Vista. Acade- my's losses were attributed to be- ing selected to play harder-hitting teams from bigger schools. The Ea- gles' batting remained quite well and the pitching staff greatly im- proved with sophomore Mason Fournier tying the school strikeout record at 32. Other records were set by Steve Dufon and Bob Jordan for the season homerun record at three apiece. Dave Welsh also had the ca- reer putout record in one season. The Eagles were coached by Mr. Dennis Kiewitt. 12 Varsity Baseball New Coach Christian Houston patiently awaits for her turn at bat Missy Beebe makes a dash for home. The 1985 Softball Team went through a rebuilding season. The relay team consisted of four members; Sebastian Robinson, Tyron Motley, Richard Russell, and Mike Lewis. The Eagles brought the race to an end in a time span of 1 min. and 31.34 sec. The team traveled and compet- ed in many events throughout Michigan, as well as in the city meets. They received trophies and awards for other outstanding performances. The team was coached by Coach Charles Thomas, who led them to a winning season. Recog- nition was given to Mike Lewis for: Outstanding Jr., Most Valuable, and Leadership, also to Sebastian Robinson for most valuable, and First Year. The most improved player was Tyron Motley. The Flint Academy's first Girls' Soccer Team was very enthusias- tic despite their inexperience. The team consisted of 12 players. Al- though the Lady Eagles had their ups and downs, they fought hard to gain respect. The team was coached by Mr. Holt who led them to an upsetting, but yet a hard fought 0-11 record. Some of the team's outstanding players were freshmen, Julie Gerace and Becky Haughey. The Lady Eagles had a team made up of mostly freshmen, but they were willing to learn the sport and determined to give it their all. This was the Academy's very first Girls Soccer Team, and we are proud. The team s next outing was a heartbreak- ing loss, but the Eagles rallied to win their next five straight games. Senior Robert Turnbull was chosen Male Ath- lete of the Year by the International Op- timist Club. Spirit Week, also spon- sored by the Student Government, was designed to give the students at the Academy a chance to dress in a variety of outfits and to have fun while doing it. A few dances were given by the Student Government, including the Sadie Haw- kins Dance. The Flint Academy should really be proud to have an organization that truly cares about the student body. Students eagerly await the start of Halloween dance. Student Government advisor, Mrs. Cochran. Jennifer Bettes and Cheryl Asa dressed in full costume for the Halloween dance. Student Government 49 After ten years the Marching Eagles still hold the beat! Since 1976 the band has decreased; how- ever, the pride, quality, and spirit of the band has strengthened. Over the years the band has added a progressive auxiliary sec- tion consisting of major- ettes, colorguards, and a pom-pom squad. Many hours of hard work and ef- fort are put into perfecting the style of the Marching Eagles. Marching band brings on many new exper- iences. The band has enter- tained at the Peach Bowl, the opening of Autoworld, and has participated in nu- merous parades. Marching Eagles Still ■ Banner: Lisa Odom and Gwen Jackson. Presenting The Academia Staff! It was a great year pro- ducing the Tenth Anniver- sary Edition of the Acade- mia. We had fun, but our purpose to make the best yearbook possible was never overlooked. The Flint Academy Staff and student body showed us a lot of support and coopera- tion through the donut sales, on student picture days, and with our roving photographers. In return, our hours of preparation and hard work will serve as a reminder of great times for our students in many years to come. -Michele Seymour Editor-in-Chief Yearbook Staff. Ten years and ten different groups of under- graduates have passed by. Although the people, the number of them, and their styles have changed, one thing has remained constant with our students; a first-rate education. Entering the Flint Academy requires special scholastic skills and these have been emphasized throughout all ten years here. Our school re- cords show our students getting higher scores on standardized tests and better grades in the classroom. We have the right to be proud and to celebrate for the Academy's tenth birthday because of our academic improvement throughout the years, and for our excellence as students.
