Academy students visited the colonial town of Williamsburg. Williamsburg was the former capital of Virginia that was restored to its original appearance in the eighteenth century. The students enjoyed portraying citizens of Williamsburg pre- senting a petition to the governor. They also learned how candles, tools, and food were prepared in that period. In Wil- liamsburg, students acquired historical knowledge as well as having a good time for three days. LeeAnn baker demonstrates the art of candlemaking Veda DeVaughn, Jeanine Mumford, Jackie Hopkson. and Angela Richardson pose for a picture at Busch Gardens. 8 Student Life A stock that was once used for punishment by the Puri- tans is fun for Darius Wright and Michael Jahr. From The Academy Dorchell Jones and Michelle Anderson enjoy one of the many meals in Washington. Mary Stewart looks tired of Washington's red tape The ninth grade Civics students visited Washington, D.C., our nation's capital. There they honored the tombs of the un- known soldier and John F. Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery. They also visited George Washington's home, Mt. Vernon, the House of Representatives and Senate chambers. This trip helped the Academy students to see first hand how our national government works. The tomb of the unknown soldier is honored by Mary Stew- art and Sean Graham Student Life 9 Memories Not Long As with every year you live something stands out that you will remember for years to come. First, there is Honors Night, where students are praised for making the honor roll. Then, there is the Prom, a celebration for making it through your senior year. Finally, there is commencement, which is the climactic point of your senior year. These memo- ries, along with others you may keep will hold a special feeling in your heart. To Be Forgotten. Jo Ellen Darlington and Melinda Dimmick eagerly walk across the stage to accept their awards. Faculty awaits as the graduates file in. Entertainment is provided by the Flint Academy Choir. The Mathematics Department allows the students to take ad- vanced math courses that will help them in college. The Academy of- fers advanced math courses such as Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geome- try. These classes expand the indi- vidual's mind by teaching them how to apply the theorems, defini- tions, and formulas to math prob- lems. Science at the Academy varies from social sciences to physical sci- ences. Social science begins with the course of Psychology which is the science dealing with intellectual and emotional behavior. Interper- sonal Dynamics is a psychology class but it involves the study of the processes underlying human behavior and its motivation. Final- ly, the course of Sociology is the study of human society. Physical sciences are any of the sciences that deal with inanimate matter or ener- gy. These classes offered at. the Academy consist of Biology, Bot- any, Chemistry, Consumer Chem- istry, Physics, and Zoology. Shawna Hunt and David Cornette apply what they learned in class to their home- work. 38 Academics Through Math And Science Mr Edson looks on as his 7th grade science class prepares for their next experiment. A fascinating world of one-celled organisms is opened up through the microscope. Michael Gale and Reginald Winslow apply what they learn in a textbook to an experiment. Lab work is the key to fully understanding chemistry. Academics 39 'T' Before E Except After m i m Lisa Smith observes a reproduction of the Shakespearean Globe Theatre made by Tom Ingram and Donovan Plamondon. 40 Academics Grammar rules become tiring to the majority of the students after being repeated throughout the school years. Eventually, these rules have been embeded inside the minds of the students, where they can use their learned skills and ex- pand their range of English skills through literature and theme writ- ing classes offered at the Academy. Juniors and Seniors who wish to enhance their writing skills can participate in a course of study that includes Techniques of Writing and Advanced Composition. Those who wish to explore literature can, through American Literature, World Literature, and Modern Lit- erature. In this class students have a different approach toward English. Darcy Dwral and Shelley Shannon work hard to improve their grammar skills. Michael Johnson points out Michigan on a map This class shows that a test in history class is never what its cracked up to be Tracing Moments In Time An Economics class works on an assignment. Social Studies at the Academy helps to clarify historical and gov- ernmental events. The World His- tory course surveys prehistoric life to present world situations. The U.S. History course begins with the immigration to the New World and ends with the progress made in our nation to this date. Civics is an in- depth study of our governmental branches and their functions. Eco- nomic classes teach the financial policies of the government. Finally, the course. You and the Law exam- ines how a law is developed and applied in our nation. Academics 41 i Hola ! Slave ! Bon jour ! French, Spanish, and Latin are the foreign language classes offered at the Academy. Both French and Spanish are offered three years in which the students learn to read, write, and speak in conversation. There are two different Latin classes offered. In Latin I, the stu- dents learn to do basic Latin trans- lations, work with basic Latin syn- tax, and improve their English grammar. Latin Heritage gives the students a chance to explore the world of Greek and Roman mytho- logy plus puts greater emphasis on working with English syntax through simple Latin translations. French students often discuss lessons in groups. 1 a Tout- E iffel Spanish students listen to a tape to help their speaking skills. 42 Academics French class checks translations done the night before. Business Promotes BOEC A variety of business courses are offered to students in all grades. General Business is offered to students who want a taste of sev- eral basic business techniques such as typing and keeping re- cords. Accounting class teaches the students how to keep sys- tematic records and analyze business and financial transac- tions. Students can learn short- hand, typing, and other various secretarial skills in stenography and intensive office. Typing 1 and 3 enables the students to learn the basics of typing, im- prove their accuracy and speed, and teaches them how to type manuscripts, book reports, and college resumes. The Business Office Education Club, BOEC, offers the more advanced stu- dents a chance to participate in an area wide competition using their acquired business skills and then enables them to com- pete as finalists, at the state wide level. When becoming self-support- ing, one must learn something about caring for one's self. Home Economics classes are of- fered to meet this need. In these classes one learns about nutri- tion and how to prepare a meal that is tasty as well as nutritious. In addition, one learns basic sewing skills. Home Economics provides one with the basis for caring for one's self. Learning The Basics Of Life Academics 45 Exercise: The Key To Fitness Many people keep fit in a variety of ways. Gym allows stu- dents to explore activities that encourage fitness as well as enjoyment. Activities covered are swimming, volleyball, bas- ketball, tennis, and badminton. Students also compete in the President's Physical Fitness Test and are awarded for meeting the requirements. i Students listen while Ms. Dawson demonstrates the next activity. Magnet program students find valuable knowledge and ex- perience in their specialty fields of study. s h T a i r m e e d Todd White and Matt Coggins put on the finishing touches. Academics 47 Yrbk '84: Where It Began Hard work and long hours were asked of the 11 mem- ber yearbook staff to complete the 1984 Academia. Impending deadlines, a low budget, and missing pic- tures all caused headaches. The staff, which met 5th hour, worked endless hours writing body copy and captions, propping pictures, and drawing layouts; all to produce the 1984 Academia. However, creative new ideas and senior pictures in color for the first time ever, seemed to make it all worthwhile. ft Stephon Kennedy and Mickey Filpansick check the alphabetical order of the underclass section. Editor Michelle Klebs checks the cropping of pictures. 48 Academics Veda DeVaughn searches for a student's name in the index. Lynn Zoll types the final copy. For just 25 an issue, stu- dents can buy a copy of the Flint Academy News, more commonly known as the FAN. The FAN, which has been in publication for 7 years, (1977-1984), has giv- en insight to school events, helped solve students' per- sonal problems through Dear Fanny, and pro- vided the students with useful information. Due to graduations and under- class schedule changes, the FAN staff became too small to operate effectively and had to discontinue publication at the end of the first semester. FAN Ceases Publication Darren Jones. Tom Ingram, and Mike O’Dell prepare a layout for the final issue Academics 49 Editor Mike Franklin checks the cropping on one of the layouts. They finished the season with five wins and four losses. It was the first winning season in Flint Academy history. The high point of the season came with the total destruction of Grosse Pointe. The Eagles won the game by a score of 55-0. Those were the most points ever scored in a game by the Academy. Their defense had three games where they didn't allow any points to be scored. When the team was in total concentration, they could play well against anyone on their schedule. Captains Stacey Henderson, Mike O'Dell and Bill Carrington provided leadership for the team. Academy's offense was paced by a strong running attack led by Vernon Marthel. Academy's swarming defense didn't allow a score in three games. Varsity Football Anthony Cavette always found a way to the open field. Leading the team in rushing was Vernon Marthrel. They were pleased many times this year because they ended the season with a record of sixteen wins and only five losses. Coach Lloyd Nicholson attributed the season to hard work and the will to win. The team started the season off with a string of five consecutive wins and were at that time the number two team of Class C” in the state of Michigan. Captains Sherrie Byrd, Mary McCain, and Margo Duncan disciplined the team to be ready to play every game. The team had the natural talent to win but Nicholson demonstrated to them how to use their talent efficiently and play team basketball. Basketball Team epitomized the hardships that a young team goes through. Coach Clif Turner helped discipline the team to a record of eleven wins and eight losses. Captain Christian Houston was a dominating player that taught the team how to win and how to be successful. The team's biggest win was a 66-6 rout against Genesee. When the girls had the early lead, they could easily beat their opponent. Their problem came when a team played them tough and the game was close. This doesn't mean that they couldn't win close games but more times than not they eventually lost the game. Their record doesn't reveal how marvelous this team really was when they were playing at their best. With some training this team can only improve to be as good as it wants to be.
