Table Of Contents 2 Them© I focused on self-fulfillment In a surrounding where discipline is met Standards were based on determination And now my goals are set. Theme 3 I ask not for a standing ovation The opportunities shine through the shadows of light I step down with the feeling of satisfaction Knowing someone else will be standing in the spotlight. By D. Klebs 4 Theme 6 Student Life Students Receive Well Deserved Recognition The Annual Honors Convocation was held Thursday night, June 3, 1982 in Henry Cook Auditorium. 271 students, in grades 9-12 were honored for being on the Honor Roll (3.0-4.0), one, two, or three times. 115 students were also recognized for perfect attendance. The night was filled with many surprises including the Leadership Award, given to seniors Kermit Brooks and Deneen Stevens. The Spirit Award, the Academy's most prestigious award, was received by Rawlan Lillard and Deneen Stevens. The ballroom was decorated in silver and blue. The prom was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at 11:30 p.m., but because the D.J., Chris Maroun, was so good most couples stayed after 11:30. After tuxedos were rented and flowers and tickets were purchased the average cost was $120.00 per couple. Despite the high cost this was the most successful Senior Prom in the Academy's history. This year's seniors started a new tradition by voting for Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Gardener was chosen as 1982's Teacher of the Year 13 seniors graduated with high distinction, 3.5-4.0. Student Life 11 Lockers And Smiles 12 Student Life Reveal Personality Student Life 13 Spring Trips Provide Spring is a time for many things For the Academy it is a time for going on trips. This past spring there were five trips: Paris; Mexico; Williamsburg Va.; Washington D.C. and Cedar Point. Two Academy students went to Paris sponsored by Central's French Club. Eight Spanish students went to Mexico. The Junior history students went to Williamsburg, Virginia. The students stayed in Williamsburg for three days and two nights. The trip cost $18100 per student but some of the cost was offset by an orange and grapefruit sale. Eighty-two ninth grade U.S. History students went to Washington D.C. The cost of the trip was $212.00 but some of it was also offset by an orange- grapefruit sale. The annual eighth- grade Cedar Point trip was held Saturday May 15. 14 Student Life A Break From School Opposite Page Bottom Right; A scenic picture of The Seine in Paris. Above; Tom Novak works at the Farmers Market during his summer vacation. In times like these when money is scarce everybody needs a job. More and more teenagers are looking for jobs in their spare time. For nnost teens the best time to work is during summer vacation when they don't have anything else to do. Many Academy students found jobs this summer. The jobs found ranged from working at the Farmers Market and ice cream places to working at photo- developing stores. Finding a job today is hard to do but as these students proved, it is not impossible. 16 Student Life Jobs to Earn Money Thl Page Above; Babysitting her nephew Justin, is Michelle Klebs Above Right; James Edwards works at Ponderosa Restaurant as a dishwasher Below; Dilynn Duckworth is a waitress and cashier at the Big Boy Restaurant in Genesee Valley Money, money, money is the main motivator for most students to get jobs. For others it is a chance to get out of school early and gain work experience For some; the money will go towards a college education; for others it will be used for luxuries and necessities. The Academy school day closing at 3:25 limits the jobs the students can get. Few of the workers make more than the minimum wage, which is $3.35 an hour. Kara Kvasnicka was elected President. Denise Dunn. Vice- President. Janda Carter, Secretary; and Marlon Morgan, Treasurer. An unofficial induction took place at Mr. Bateman's home where the new members took an oath to the N.H.S. In order to get into the National Honor Society the requirements are; tenth-grade. 3.40; eleventh-grade. 3.20; and twelve-grade. 3.00. After two years, the school store which is run by N.H.S. members, finally received a name, the Eagles Nest . Profits from this store enabled the N.H.S. to donate a video recorder to the school. Student Life 19 Student Commission The Student Commission is an organization designed to promote good relationships between the staff and students. Daily meetings are held in Mrs. Belanger's room. The officers are Kim Dunbar, President; Theresa Holbrook, Vice-President; and Marietta Davis. Secretary-Treasurer. New officers are elected every year. The commission has sponsored many different activities such as the Christmas Basket Drive, Hush Days, and the Halloween, Sweetheart, and Sadie HAwkins dances. BOEC is a Michigan vocational student organization for high school students. Most BOEC members have occupational objectives that include such careers as clerk, typist, teller, secretary, stenographer, data processing and accounting. BOEC is an intracurricular activity that is designed to develop leadership abilities, interest in the American business system, and competency in office occupations. BOEC has taken an interest in the Special Olympics. The organization gained recognition this year by holding various fund raisers which included a yearbook raffle, a plaster sale, a cookie sale, a candy cane sale, and a painter's cap sale. 24 Student Life Promote Participation Opposite Page Bot- tom Right; Victor Green pays close at- tention at a BOEC meeting Top Right; Mrs. Nunn takes sug- gestions at a BOEC meeting This Page Left; David Gaines dis- plays his team uniform on Sports Day Far Left; Charles Griffin scans the scene with his new wave glasses Top Left; Bayyina Rob- inson is ready for New Wave Day Above; Tonya Novara and Sue Dufon show us what they want to be on Sports Day Student Life 25 The Year In Review v ' ces Artificial heart miracle $Money pinch s on v rPN Pot bust i p tax boost ■% Blanchard, Headlee 0 7 ' « Alabama hero, ° ( Bear Bryant, is dead at 69 ; ic. 0t es Japanese auto imports Student sages Messages Messages Messc FV.rtf Acode mv 6hjde foesd. ocA' L?yc c Ctass of jAOtyAA: uLe±_ (it,} tUAJU r t- ft - toi+ej -£nr., za La , «U rm JX . j - , - ' y v«o tw _ a .r 5 X OE.T M VAiLTH LITfLC H6V.P Ffcoi (V .C'AAWL ftX T “ ‘)' Twg- DUfti J)eet Vtehe,s do +he. class .r°f .Ss 'TV jucna jLc. In their second trip at Spencer ville, Ohio, the team played better despite losing 36-8. Throughout the season, they played four teams that were rated in the top ten of their respective classes. The Eagles will be losing nine seniors with fourteen members returning. Margo Duncan, and Mary McCain gave the girls leadership on the court as well as off. Experience and a total team effort led to our team's record, said Coach Nicholson. The 1982 season was nothing but exciting for the Junior Varsity Girls' Basketball team. The Eagles led by Captains Lisa Dye, Angela Giden, and Tanya Powell compiled a remarkable record of fifteen wins and no losses. Using their talent and skill, the Girls' J.V. easily dominated their opponents on game day. This team worked harder and responded more to the challenges, said Coach Clif Turner. This is the first time a Girls' Basketball team has gone undefeated during a season. “Our marvelous season can be attributed to attitude, dedication, defense, and hustle, said Coach Turner. 70 J.V.
