The units of study are built on the premise that certain skills and tech- niques must be mastered in each grade. Eng- lish 9 is viewed as a transitional step toward the more intensified study of literature and theme writing in grades 10-12. Students in grades 11 and 12 who wish to en- hance their writing skills may select from two one-semester writing courses. Techniques of Writing and Advanced Composition, which give special emphasis to composing. Expo- sure to outstanding writers and their ideas may be secured by selecting Early English Writers, American Literature, or World Lit- erature . Latin Heritage may be taken for Eng- lish credit or foreign language credit. Above Right: Christina Brown finds English amusing. Right: Charlotte Cabine offers Maria Ascencio a helping hand. Bottom: Pat Harris and Shantel Bowden share a book as they do their assignments. 21 Concentration Is The Key To Comprehension In Math The Mathematics Department at the Flint Academy has courses primarily for students at or above grade level. The Academy does not offer remedial classes such as Math Lab or Math Fundamentals and in keeping with the standards of the Academy, students must achieve 60% in order to receive a passing grade. This year a pilot program was instituted on a trial basis for graduation and promotion re- quirements. The students were tested on 25 math objectives and had to pass 15 of the 25 at the 7th grade level, 20 of the 25 at the 8th grade level and all of the 25 at the 9th grade level. The sophomores took an entirely dif- ferent test. Algebra I, II, III, and IV are offered to stu- dents as well as Geometry and Math Applica- tions . Students may also opt to enroll in the Mathematics Specialty Program on a shared time basis. 22 FACING PAGE, TOP LEFT: Miss Curtis helps Sam Office measure an angle with a protractor. They do a variety of art projects including such things as drawing, painting, mosaics, stitchery and sculpture. In 8th grade, students may elect art for one semester. The curriculum includes a variety of projects and instructon such as still life, portraits, pottery, stitchery, water color, color theory, wood sculpture, and others. 9th through 12th graders may elect Art I for the entire year. This class includes instruction in life drawing, print making, portraits, still life, pottery, stitchery, sculpture, perspec- tive, advertisements, and others. Art I includes a wide variety of 2-dimen- sional and 3-dimensional projects, using more advanced media techniques and skills. 24 Business Encourages Helpful Skills The business education department of the Flint Academy takes pride in attempting to meet the needs of the students enrolled by of- fering the following classes: seventh grade typewriting; exploratory business, 8th grade; general business, 9th grade; Typewriting I, II III; Accounting I II; and intensive office. The intensive office class offers a bit of realism for those interested in an office occu- pation. It incorporates simulated office prac- tices which require the application of all basic learning skills. The class is a two-hour block. ABOVE LEFT: Practice is es- sential in typing. LEFT: Glen Newhouse and Charles Osborne work on be- ginning typing skills. 25 Students Can Use What They Learn In Foreign Language The Foreign Language program at the Flint Academy offers beginning and intermediate courses in Spanish and French as well as a course in Latin Heritage. Language classes involve students from grades 8 through 12. In the first level, students practice good pronunciation and listening habits. There are lessons in the structure of the language. The intermediate classes do more reading and writing but continue with a strong emphasis on speaking, too. Special events this year include French and Spanish meals at the International Institute, and a Spanish flamenco program. Top: Linda Dotson partici- pates in a Latin festival. Right: Jeff DeCuise listens in the lab. 26 The Bilingual Program: Two Languages, Two Cultures This is the first year in which there has been bilingual education at the Flint Academy. The purpose of bilingual education is to provide instruction in two languages — Spanish and English. Students with limited speaking abili- ties are given instruction and tutoring in Span- ish while they are developing their English speaking and writing skills. Also in the pro- gram are students who speak only English and those who speak both languages. Students en- rolled in the bilingual program study Mexi- can-American history and culture as well as Spanish and English. The students finishing the program have an understanding of two lan- guages and two cultures. The Social Studies program at the Academy is growing as more and more students are taking these courses. In the coming year, we plan on add- ing other courses to make Social Studies even more interesting and challenging to the stu- dents . 29 Industrial Arts Classes Industrial Arts is a part of general edu- cation which is afforded by the Flint Academy to all youth. It is not designed for specific occupational preparation but for many it will have to meet this need. In our highly industrialized society, it may serve as a means of exploring industrial knowledge, industrial methods, hobby interests and the development of such at- titudes as will enable youth and adults of all ages to adjust more adequately to a democratic society. The Flint Academy Industrial Arts Program stresses the development of a strong foundation in the technical skills and attitudes regarding matters needed for a happy and effective living. 30 Give Worthwhile Experience FACING PAGE, TOP: Virdell Garrett smooths over his work in Auto Body. These groups stress both individual and group achievement and excellence. The Music Department is active in improving school spirit and student involvement. The Marching Band and Pep Bands are in- volved in athletic functions as well as civic activities. The Choir, Orchestra, Jr., and Sr. Bands participate in concerts for students and adults as well as music festivals. In Music the students are encouraged to strive continuously for both musical excel- lence and social awareness. ABOVE RIGHT: Henry Burton receives instruction during summer band program. Home Economics Promotes Self- Sufficiency Stuffed animal pillows — sewing machines — needles — snack foods — flour sifters — chocolate chips. These are some of the items used by students in the Home Economics classes. Seventh grade students divide their 10 weeks in exploring kitchen techniques and in using a pattern to make a stuffed toy. Eighth grade students spend one semester in class. Their foods unit includes foods for breakfast, and casseroles, salads and pies. They also use a pattern to assemble a garment for themselves. The ninth grade class meets for the school year. Craft projects are individually selected by each student and may include crochet, needlepoint, latch hooking and others. There are also units of Food Preparation and Service and Clothing Construction. ABOVE LEFT: Satisfaction in ones work is developed also. ABOVE: Hooking a rug takes patience and endurance. There is also a pool, where some students can learn to swim and others can improve their ability. Life-saving techniques are taught at poolside. In the classes, exercises are a daily re- quirement. Often, this is how the day's activi- ties are begun. Correct position and move- ment are essential to exercising effectually, and students learn both in Gym. Some of the activities included in the cur- riculum for this class are floor hockey, vol- leyball, weight-lifting (for boys), track run- ning , and basketball. Several other activities are also a part. Three semesters of Gym are necessary for graduation at the Academy. These must be completed in the ninth through twelfth grades. 35 ABOVE: Developing a serve is essential in volleyball. LEFT: Ms. Dawson observes warm-up exercises in gym class. The Full Range Of Science Science courses at the Flint Academy are designed to help the student see how scientists think and how they attempt to solve problems scientifically. Students use scientific procedures, including logical reason- ing, mathematical and scientific tools, science materials and equipment, and skills and techniques to discover and better understand scientific principles and concepts. Students in the 7th grade are offered physical science. Students in the 8th grade have chemistry, and those in the 9th, general science. Students in grades 10 through 12 are offered the full courses of biology, high school physics, and chemistry. Several semester courses may also be offered, depending on student interest.
