They are also presented with demonstrations of the development of artwork over the years. The course, while being an outlet for the students' own ideas, could also be seen as a step into art appreciation. Spanish and French are available at beginning and advanced levels. The sequence of foreign language study begins at the ninth grade or later except for a Conversational Spanish class for those eighth graders enrolled in the Amigos program. In foreign language the emphasis is first on understanding what is heard and developing the skills to respond. Later, reading and writing are emphasized. The structure of the language is studied and a basic vocabulary is acquired. The Latin Heritage class is a one-year course which investigates the relationship between Latin and English. ABOVE RIGHT: To aid in foreign language enunciation, tapes are used. RIGHT: Mrs. Maddix works on verb conjugation. 22 There Is More To Home Ec Than Cooking And Sewing Homemaking is offered at all grade levels to help teenagers develop as individuals and to become successful members of a family and the community. Students are offered the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of food and nutrition, clothing care and construction, the home and family, child care, being a consumer, and developing as a citizen. Laboratory classes provide a chance to practice these skills while working as part of a group. ABOVE LEFT: Pride in a job well done can be infectious. ABOVE: 1 'The bobin has to be put in correctly,'1 explains Mrs. Ecklund. LEFT: Making future homemakers. 23 Industrial Arts Enriches Skills Industrial Arts is that phase of industrial education which is offered for its educational value. It serves as a means of exploring industrial knowledge, methods, hobbies. It is a curriculum area in which students may create, design, experiment and plan while dealing with issues related to technology. The Industrial Arts program stresses the development of a strong foundation in technical skills, consumer knowledge, and attitudes. The program provides each student the opportunity to work with tools and material of industry so they may acquire understanding of technological development. The department is designed for students at all levels. ABOVE RIGHT: Paul Lenhart and Clark Williams listen as Mr. Smith explains drafting techniques. RIGHT: John Gilliam and Pam Stokes work on their woodshop projects. 24 The Flint Academy is a place where students can develop the skills of body work and painting in the Auto Body course. Students work with different types of tools in the class. The men responsible for teaching this course are David Belisle and his assistant, Larry Balongie. There are two classes a day - one in the morning from 7:40 to 10:13 and one in the afternoon from 11:20 to 1:40. The class is worth three credits and is a great opportunity. ABOVE LEFT: Jac Hill and Robert Marcum sand a car in the auto shop. LEFT: Terry Smith and Tyrone Elliott make last minute changes. 25 Accuracy Is The Key In Math The Mathematics Department at the Flint Academy has courses primarily for students at or above grade level. As in other subjects, students need to achieve at least a 60% average in order to pass. The department does not offer remedial courses such as math lab or math foundations. Students have fewer math options than the other schools. Courses which are parallel to the ones offered in the other Flint Community schools include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Algebra III, Algebra IV, and Math Applications. Students also have the option, on a shared time basis, of enrolling with the mathematics specialty program at Northern for advanced or enriched courses. TOP: Ms. Curtis helps a student with a problem ABOVE: Students demonstrate their work. 26 Music Groups Display Talent At the Academy a wide variety of musical experiences are offered in both instrumental and vocal areas. The instrumental division offers courses ranging for the beginning students to the very advanced. Instrumental groups include Junior Band, Senior Band, Marching Band and Orchestra. These groups have been very active this year, performing in school concerts, festivals and sports events. Also, this year they have sponsored several fund raising activities to purchase instruments and new uniforms. Band director is Mr. Micheal Perkins. Under the direction of Mrs. Doris Carroll, the vocal music division has greatly expanded since last year. Besides courses for various grades in music appreciation, classes have been developed for chorus and vocal ensemble for more advanced vocal students. These groups have also given many performances this year which have been highly acclaimed. UPPER RIGHT: William Lewis works out in one of the private practice rooms. The staff members are Judy Dawson, Dorsey Ross, Janice Walker, and Art Gibson. The Department offers a variety of activities such as basketball, floor hockey and volleyball, and individual sports such as the obstacle course, tennis, swimming, and badminton. The spring semester classes were involved in many more outdoor activities such as track, softball, tennis, and soccer. Gymnastics was also taught in the spring. During the activity phase of the classes, everyone is encouraged to participate. The instructors often remind students about practicing good health habits, safety, and sportsmanship. In learning science , it is hoped that students will develop critical thinking and logical ways to soive technical problems encountered in our society. In addition, habits and attitudes should be developed which reflect on responsibility and personal growth. The Flint Academy requires two years of science as one of the graduation requirements. These credits may be obtained between the freshmen and senior years. 30 Challenges Students TOP: Mrs. Levander assists students in observing chemical reactions in Science Lab.
