On our graduation from grade school we realized that one of our longest-awaited dreams was finally about to come true. We would be in high school. Ni longer would we be unaccepted because we were “little grade school kids.” We were entering the big time . .. High School. When we arrived we were naturally scared. The people were so big. Over there were seniors, pillars of knowledge . . . and there was the big basketball star I idolized when I’d come to the games. And look, there is the straight “A” honor students talking to the coach we heard was so mean. But later we found that those' seniors and the honor student and the basketball star were human, like us. And the coach wasn’t all that mean. They were nothing to he scared of or awed at. We made friends quickly. From among our classmates and even from those fear- ful upperclassmen. One couldn’t help but feel good when one of them took interest in you and gave you a helping hand or a word of encouragement. But we were not accepted as readily as we had hoped. Now we were considered “little seventh graders.” Yet we had dreams and we planned to fulfill them. For some, the dreams were to make the basketball team or play in the band, for some, being a cheerleader.
