Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1978 volume:

I 7 On our graduation from grade school we realized that one of our longest-awaited dreams was finally about to come true. We would be in high school. Ni longer would we be unaccepted because we were “little grade school kids.” We were entering the big time . .. High School. When we arrived we were naturally scared. The people were so big. Over there were seniors, pillars of knowledge . . . and there was the big basketball star I idolized when I’d come to the games. And look, there is the straight “A” honor students talking to the coach we heard was so mean. But later we found that those' seniors and the honor student and the basketball star were human, like us. And the coach wasn’t all that mean. They were nothing to he scared of or awed at. We made friends quickly. From among our classmates and even from those fear- ful upperclassmen. One couldn’t help but feel good when one of them took interest in you and gave you a helping hand or a word of encouragement. But we were not accepted as readily as we had hoped. Now we were considered “little seventh graders.” Yet we had dreams and we planned to fulfill them. For some, the dreams were to make the basketball team or play in the band, for some, being a cheerleader. I breams ■— Entering the eighth grade we felt more con- fident. Gone were the first year pressures. New dreams took the place of old conquered ones. We were accepted a bit more, but we still couldn’t help feeling a little inferior. Our freshman year was an important one. Finally we were given some acceptance, some respect. All-state band and varsity basket- ball were just some of the new dreams. Some real responsibility was thrust our way. Harder subjects . . . more homework. But along with these came more friends . . . good times . . . and a whole lot of fun. We loved high school and couldn’t understand why we were so scared when we got here. As sophomores we got some deserved atten- tion. More responsibility was forced on us. We accepted this responsibility and worked like heck to succeed. Junior year ... Class rings .. . junior senior prom . . . looking forward to next year when we will be the cream of the crop, the kings of the hill. — Seniors. But we still had a big year to go through. An eventful year, a busy year, a fun year. It went quickly, and then ... It happened. We were seniors. Could it be? Only one more year of high school? Yes, it was true. This was it. We were determined to make it the best year. Where had the years gone? Were we the same timid little people we were when we got here? Had we changed? Or were we essential- ly the same people with another exterior? Who knows? But we will always have the memories . . . the sweet, the bitter. The discoveries, the les- sons. The friends, the loves. The fun. We will remember you high school. We will remember you. A Discover something new everyday FAR LEFT: Skip Ball takes one of the last chances to enjoy the warm weather before winter sets in. On their arrival they were greeted by Bill Mahoney, DJ and station manager of WHAR-WVHF. He then conducted a tour of the radio station. On the tour, Mahoney showed the students the computer that runs the station 24 hours a day. Also during the tour, the group met Lee Carder, another DJ. The students got a first hand look at a radio announcer in action. Also there helping out was Mike Shirley, the early morning radio announcer. Bill Mahoney concluded his tour by showing the class the ticker tape machine where all the news is received by the station, and handed out old records since the radio uses 8-track tapes. 47 Another day in school! Have you ever woke up and wanted nothing better but to go back to sleep, without coming to reality? Especially on a Monday morning. Remember that exam you were to take in American Studies and you thought for sure the test was next week but it was really today? And when your English teacher assigns reading a chapter in your American Literature book and to do the questions at the end and you do just like he assigned except you do the wrong chapter. Those are the type of days, I wish would never come around. But I guess if you did every- thing right — life might be a bore without the excitement of getting in trouble. Do you remember at the end of a 9 week period what you get? That’s right, a test on everything you’ve learned. So, lets hope you’ve learned something. 49 T “I can’t wait to go to the prom.” “I wonder if I’ll get asked to the prom.” Sound familiar? These are two phrases that are heard at least two months before the Junior-Senior Prom. Then there is this quivery feeling of excitement that arises in your stomach when you’re getting ready. The feeling that “Man, that hair’s never gonna lay down”, or “I just know I’m going to forget to do something.” There seems to be a magic that no one can escape. All of the girls make sure their gowns are just perfect and the guys tuxedos have to be just right. From the time you enter the room at the prom till you leave it’s just like living in a dream world. The 1976-77 prom had a magic all its own. Even though the sprinkles outside matched the theme “April Showers” no one’s spirits seemed to be dampened. Everyone was too busy dancing to the music of “Tremor” or eating the delicious food, or just mingling among friends and having a good time to notice the rain outside. One of the highlights of the evening was the crowning of the queen and the king. Joyce Burgeen was chosen as queen, and her princess was Beth Mace. David 50 April showers fail to dampen Snodgrass served as king of the prom. When asked on the success of the prom, Tom Isabella, president of the junior class said, “We put a lot of work into it. They fell down pyramids, out of buses, and their band was directed by a 1 year old boy, the son of one of their police escorts. Who? Flemington High School’s band of course! Last year, the band members flew to Mexico to compete with many other bands from the U.S.A. for top ratings. Well, the band not only got top ratings but they also had a lot of fun in the process. While they were down there they toured a castle, a cath- edral where in it, everything was made of gold and marble, and a bull fighting arena. They also played in 4 concerts, 3 for the public and one for the judges and were escorted by police- men to all of their concerts. You might be asking who fell down a pyramid, well, it was Billy Greathouse. He was walking down the steep part of a pyramid and slipped and fell down about 20 or 30 feet of it. He said “I slipped and just started rolling down it and when I got to the bottom one Mexican man grabbed me and another picked up my camera that I had dropped.” At first I thought that he was going to take off with it but he didn’t.” He was unhurt by the fall and he gave all his friends a good laugh so that turned out okay. 64 Ensembles win superior ratings Janice Stout, Rhonda Carder, Debby Simmons, Annette Smith. Season of Growth The 1977-78 Greyhoundette basket- ball season ... It was a year of ups and downs ... Of victories and of defeats ... Of smiles and of tears . . . But it was also a season of growing, of learning, and of experiencing. It started out with problems, prob- lems that made the future of the team look dark. It ended with the girls winning in the first round of the sectional tournaments before losing to a good Notre Dame team in the second round. Many were the pre-season problems. Yet they overcame these problems to become one of the most exciting and productive teams in Flemington’s girls athletics. The girls were led by tri-captains Terri Greenfield, Annette Smith and Rhonda Carder. They showed leader- ship both on and off the court for both players and non-players. But where would they be without the rest of the team. Lisa Bailey and Jackie Knotts, supposably inexperienced fresh- men filled starting roles with poise and skill uncommon in players in their first year. Susan Turoczy, now a two year veteran, played with all the fight possible. Sylvia Cobb, Diane Coltelli, and Pam McCloy worked hard and got in return playing time that will make them in- valuable in later years. Coaches Randolph and Wakcley brought the team from a 4-16 record to a winning 10-6, without a senior on the squad. The fans came in good numbers to cheer on their mighty Greyhoundettes. Till the end. the loyal mass stuck with the girls. All in all it was a fantastic, excit- ing, productive year for the 77-78 Grey- houndettes. And next year proves to be an even better one. 83 ABOVE: Diane Coltelli, Sylvia Cobb, Pam McCloy, Terri Greenfield, Lisa Bailey. The Greyhoundettes, after com- mitting one foul after another, had only three players on the floor in the last minutes of the game: Lisa Bailey, Annette Smith, and Jackie Knotts. Though suffering from foul trouble throughout the game, the Grey- houndettes dominated the game from the first quarter on. The leading scorers for the team were Annette Smith and Lisa Bailey, with 32 and 15 points respectively. Other scorers were Terri Greenfield, with four; Rhonda Carder, with three; and Jackie Knotts and Susan Turoczy, with two points each. Bennett and Huff- man lead South Harrison in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The final score was: Flemington 58, South Harrison 42. In the sectional championship game the Greyhoundettes were defeated by the Notre-Dame Irish in a hard fought game. The defeat stopped the Grey- houndettes from advancing to the Re- gional tournaments. The contest was very close going into the fourth quarter, until the Irish’s Kris Renzelli hustled for three steals which all led to layups. Though the Greyhoundettes suffered the defeat, they did not go home losers. After only two years playing ex perience, they had won round one of the sectional tournaments. Kris Renzelli of Notre-Dame led all scoring, while Terri Greenfield and Annette Smith led the Greyhoundettes with 14 and 13 points respectively. Lisa Bailey also scored with four points. The final score was; Notre-Dame 41, Flemington 31. TOP: Diane Cotelli practices her tipping in pregame warm-up. ABOVE LEFT: Jackie Knotts tries to find an open player as defense closes in.
