I The 1976-77 yearbook is dedicated to Frances D. Piccolo, an outstanding educator in West Virginia Public Schools for forty-two years. Mrs. Piccolo retired as Flemington High School librarian in 1976 after devoting her time, talent and energy to the communities serving Flemington High School. Frances D. Piccolo “Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” A Senior Reflects C an il possibly have been six years since our first day at this school? When the awesome older students left, we were sorry to see them go. The classmates we were afraid of, ended up by being some of our closest friends. The years have been filled with learning— not just from books, but learning about life, each other, and even ourselves. I don’t want it to end! I don’t want to leave my friends and the happiness we share when we’re together. But I must view it as a beginning, the beginning of a new era of my life. I must be content with the memories that each of you have given me, memories I will always cherish and memories which I will pause . . . J.E.L. 6 HAPPENINGS Stairway to Heaven Students, dancing to the sound of Angora Watt, attended the ’76 Junior-Senior Prom, held at the Benedum Civic Center on May 15. Everything started off with a formal dinner. Mr. John Ellison gave the invocation before the dinner. Albert Smith, senior class president, thanked the Junior Class for the Prom, and Curtis Stewart, Junior Class Vice-President gave a short informal speech. 8 Sets Mood for 76 Prom After dinner, couples adjourned upstairs for a picture-taking session. The juniors and seniors then proceeded with the Grand March. At the end of the Grand March Albert Smith and Robin Whitehair were crowned King and Queen of the prom. Princesses were Cathy Tate and Kim Blake. After all the gay proceedings were held, couples danced to the music of Angora Watt. 9 One day our photographer happened by Mr. Hooper’s room and saw Mr. Hooper quickly took charge of the situation as the rest of the class Jackie Crouse come to the aid of a fallen blind: All in a 10 got into the action and finally succeeded in taming the blind fortunately, (or unfortunately), the accident was over and the class began to study as Jackie Crouse shows; Math once again. Day’s Work 11 Poets-in-Residence Instructs Two poets, under the state’s Poet-in-Residence organization, came to Flemington to teach poetry writing and appreciation. Under their guidance, English classes 7 through 12 wrote poetry on such topics as, “I wish 1 was ...” RIGHT: Weaving the fantasy world of poetry, poet holds the 7th grade's at- tention Poet explains to class how to write poetry Barbara I ayman asks for advice from the expert. 12 English Students in Poetry LEFT: Reading poetry often starts im- aginations going. 13 Telling a poem proves to be a special experience. Advice from Seniors Living up to the saying, “I don’t know, as a senior,” David Williams, seventh grader asks senior, Percy Riffle for advice on a problem .. . Percy stops, thinks it over; then decides that the question would have been better not asked. 14 Kings of the Party! Students made merry as Christmas time rolled around. Almost every room was celebrating, as well as the various clubs before the Christmas break. Eighth graders hold a Christmas party in Mrs. Walls’ room. FAR LEFT: Fun at the Xth grade party. LEFT: French club enjoy delicacies. BELOW: Parties end the school day. 15 How the West was Won Once upon a time way out West in the rapidly growing town of CARRIE, which is located in the northern part of southern Oregon, there was the most terrible, awful, meanest villian; he didn’t even brush his teeth. He was the terrible Mr. JAWS, who went around deafening whole cities with his hideous renditions of BETH. The people of CARRIE didn't want to be deafened so they sent for the best good-doers of all time, CHARLIE'S ANGELS. THE ANGELS got on this train called the SILVER STREAK for CARRIE. ERIC, the mayor of CARRIE met the girls at the train station and told them his problem. He also let them know that Mr. JAWS had a partner to sing harmony, (which he couldn’t), but he later made it big on his own. He was the young KING KONG. THE ANGELS told ERIC that they would have to send for STARSKY AND HUTCH. When the boys got the word they headed for CARRIE. STARSKY AND HUTCH and THE ANGELS devised a plan to catch Mr. JAWS and KING KONG. They rented the amphitheater and pretended to be a rock group called HELTER SKELTER. The day before the concert the ANGELS got a call from the leader of a group called ROOTS. Since there was no group around CARRIE with that name they knew that it must really be Mr. JAWS and KING KONG, the ones who might have been BORN INNOCENT but grew up vicious. That night, just before the concert, STARSKY AND HUTCH and the ANGELS were getting the trap ready. They built an invisible sound-proof booth over the whole stage. After it was all finished the girls said to STARSKY AND HUTCH, “TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT.” “Yeah, I guess so girls. We’d better get ready.” The ANGELS then said, “We don’t know if we can do it.” The boys replied, “IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW we can’t catch them. Here take these ear plugs so you don’t have to listen.” ROOTS came out and started to sing. The ANGELS then gave STARSKY AND HUTCH the signal and the boy dropped the sound-proof booth on ROOTS. They kept on singing and sang each other deaf. Afterwards they promised to never sing again. Everyone said, “From now on there will be nothing in the West but HAPPY A survey taken by the Journalism class showed that the following were the favorites of Flemington High students for the 1976-77 school year. Its creation is only momentary living only in the minds of its audience, to create a moment the artist must spend hun- dreds of hours in preparation, knowing that perfection will never be attained yet always pursuing that goal. Music is enjoyed by everyone but only a special few en- joy the art of performing. At Flemington we have built a tradition of performance. A tradition that always looks towards perfection. 21 Buck Courtney — Our director, teacher, and friend. In music, the relationship of practice to performance is endless. To perform well enough to earn All State honors is therefore a tribute to the solitary hours of work that precede this honor. They were rewarded with a hustling group of girls who in their first year won three games in the midst of a very competitive schedule. Scoring 26 points a game the Greyhoundettes were led by Annette Smith’s 212 points, for a 14.2 average; Terry Greenfield’s 112 points for a 7.5 average; and Joyce Burgreen, 31 points; Rhonda Carder, Susan Turoczy and Debbie Musgrave also scored some key baskets at very opportune moments. Thegirls’ first win came over Mannington at home by a score of 42-33. Smith led all scorers in the game with 23 points. In an earlier meeting, the Mannington squad es- caped with a narrow victory 23-19. Our two other wins came over Coalton, both home and away. At Coalton, Smith pumped through 26 points to lead the way to a 39-9 victory. At home, she matched this effort as she again scored 26 points on the way to a 38-22 win. There were several close games which were decided by only a few points. When the Tygart Valley Bulldogs visited Flemington they went home with a hard fought 37-31 victory. Terry Greenfield fired 13 points through and gathered in 13 rebounds in the game. She led us again, when we traveled to Tygart Valley with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Lumberport captured two close victories over the team. In the season opener, we played the Eagles here, losing 39-42. In this contest. Smith scored 16, Greenfield 6 and Burgreen chipped in 2 to complete the scoring. In the second Lumberport game Greenfield pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 6 points. Smith controlled the board 12 times and led the scoring column with 24 points. They fought hard but Lumberport escaped with a 39-32 vic- tory. 43 Rekindling girls’ athletics from years gone by undaun- tedly the Greyhoundettes gave it one heck of a try. Our co-captains were a dynamic duo indeed, and a scrappy ne’r-say-die team they did lead. There was Smitty possessed with an abundance of natural ability, poised and consistent even though youthful was she, adding immensely to our stability. Joyce, the other half of this glorious duet, was a firey senior lady we can see yet, fighting off challengers around the net, in the process of clearing the boards once more, enroute to setting up another possible Greyhoun- dette score. And yes there was also little Susan T., no bigger than a fireplug she. playing with reckless abandon and amazing resiliency. She blended well with the rest of the quintet, and toward the end of the campaign was playing like a seasoned vet. Anyone who saw Terry had to be more than impressed, with the ease and graceful manner in which she finessed the dismantling of opposition in an offensive-minded way, while at the same time holding the competition at bay. The quarterback of the Greyhoundette attack featured an intense young filly named Rhonda who responded to competition in such a way as to kindle inspiration in the midst of making the big play. Greyhoundettes Carry The rest of the Greyhoundettes made contributions galore and the successes experienced hinged on this fac- tor. I’m sure Debbie was effective in giving a lift upon en- tering the game when things started to go adrift. Tammy always seemed to be there indeed, whenever called upon to fill an indelible need. And last but not least Susan R. through it all added zest and zeal in a most pleasant way. In the namesake of teamwork her contributions she made and in fulfillment of team accomplishments her ef- forts repaid. 44 3-11 First Season Record As an entity itself, the Greyhoundettes hung tough for the duration and achieved accomplishments that would tend to make even skeptics turn their heads with a taint of personal satisfaction at their efforts put forth. Realizing that winning is glorious, undisputed as it may be, but participating, ah yes, competing, that is the key. In giving that something extra you never thought you had and in successfully reaching some seemingly unattainable goal. The thrill of victory — the agony of defeat, they ex- perienced them both and in the process developed an un- quenchable desire to respond, to react positively in an ac- cepting way to the challenge of reaching out for that all elusive pinnacle of perfectionality. If our season created an awareness of the pinnacle and the tireless effort involved in merely attaining even the minutest of stride toward this plateau, then it was worth it — after all, that’s what it's all about. NEW GYMNASIUM: We will definitely get a new gym. It will not be as elaborate as I would like but it will be better than what we’ve got now which is really very little. But we are almost guaranteed to get a gym, maybe in two years. Interview With Robert L. Shields BAND: ... I feel that Mr. Courtney has done a dynamic job with the Band. This year we had 8 all-staters and last year I believe we had 9. I think it’s very deserving, a school this size to have a band this great.
