The Senior Class of 1975 Dedicate our yearbook to the loving memory of a former classmate William Rodney Tatterson I cannot say, and I will not say, that he is dead. He is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, he has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair, its needs must be, since he lingers there. And you oh, you, who the wildest yearn, for an old-time step, and the glad return. Think of him faring on, as dear, in the love of There as the love of Here. Think of him still as the same. I say, he is not dead - he is just away. — James Whitcomb Riley F. H.S ALMA MATER Here's to Flemington High School, Loyal through and through. We have the spirit, but who are we but Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. And here's to all good fellows. Students of each class; And to our royal colors, Gold and Blue. US 1974-1975 I want to congratulate you, not so much on what you have finished as on what you are about to begin. A fresh beginning with new and thrilling opportunities await each one of you. Be ready for your opportunity when it comes. You may not recognize it as such at first, for it frequently comes disguised as hard work and greater responsibilities. It will mean more and greater effort on your part. But the person who forces himself to make that extra effort will reach, what seemed to be, unattainable goals. I am sorry to see you go, even while I rejoice with you in your advancement. You have done well here and I am proud of you; you are going to do even better and I am proud of that knowledge. I bid you farewell with the assurance that I believe in your ability to bring honor to the name of Flemington High School. 3 Sincerely, Robert L. Together we have looked forward to this day, and now that it is here we say with pleasure and sadness, “here endeth!” Our graduation marks for us an end — and a beginning. For some of us, this day will be followed by the beginning of college. To others of us it is the beginning of a new life wherein we will gain our first knowledge of the business of earning a living. We have often thought that limitations placed upon us by home and school were too severe. We know their purpose was to see that we were prepared to conduct our own lives with individual initiative and independent judgment. Now their job is done! Ours is beginning. Our life has now been placed in our own hands to do with as we will. The choice is ours! 6 Carol Bane “Cow” “It’s nice to be important, but much more important to be nice.” Future Business Leaders of America, and Yearbook Staff Virgil Lee Brown “Butch” “The road to success is uphill, unless your father owns the company.” Band, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Year- book Staff Rosie Sharon Campbell “Rose” “The glory of life is to love, not to be loved; to give, not to get; to serve, not to be served.” Future Business Leaders of America, Yearbook Staff, Perfect Attendance, Faithful Attendance, Honor Roll Certificate, Class Officer. 7 Norman Douglas Costilow “Moses” “If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade.” Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Yearbook Staff, Basketball Manager Diana Kay McKinney Drainer “Skins” “The past cannot be changed; but the future is still in your power.” Band, Pep Club, Majorette, Class Officer, Future Homemakers of America, Honor Roll Certificate, Band Letter, Yearbook Staff Thomas Henry Fast “Humble Howard” “Great minds have purposes; others have wishes.” Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Yearbook Staff 8 Dora Ann Fleming “Dorie” “We may give without loving, but we cannot love without giving.” Future Business Leaders of America, Yearbook Staff, Future Homemakers of America, Faithful Atten- dance, Honor Roll Certificate, Library Assistant, Senior Class-Secretary, Outstanding Teenager of America, Student Action for Education, Cheerleader, Pep Club, National Honor Society Sheila Ann Fragale “Fragile” “When all is said and done, it is best to leave it that way.” Future Business Leaders of America, Pep Club, Year- book Staff, Future Homemakers of America, Student Action for Education, Cheerleader, Band, Perfect At- tendance, Faithful Attendance, Library Assistant, Senior Class — Historian, Outstanding Teenager of America. We, the Class of 1975, being in as good mental health as usual, and in better temper than usual, do bequeath to the Juniors our good luck, the privilege of being a Senior, and any girls or boys we may have left behind in our haste. To our friends, the Sophomores, we leave our patience, which will be useful in enduring the Juniors. To the young and unsophisticated Freshmen we leave a map of the school building, so they won’t get lost or get in the way. To the Junior High we leave any old apple cores, wads of gum, or crumpled notes we may have left behind. To our principal we give and bequeath a sense of relief that we have at least graduated, pleasant memories of our four years together, and a feeling of pride in any great deeds or noteworthy achievements that our future may contain, realizing that such glories — if any, will owe much to his example and consel. Alas, to our dear old school building, we leave the peaceful quiet, caused by our absence. 22 SENIORS CAN YOU FAVORITE IMAGINE SAYING Carol Bane Coming to school regularly “Let’s skip out” Virgil Brown As a bald headed midget “For sure” Rosie Campbell Without Ralph “You’ve gotta be kidding” Douglas Dostilow With short hair “You bogart” Diana Drainer Not arguing “That makes me so sick” Tom Fast Losing his temper “Jack your jaws” Dora Fleming Driving a Volkswagen “I don’t care” Sheila Fragale As a blonde “All, Shoot” William Frum Wearing a suit “Where’s it at?” Lois Frye Weighing 200 lbs. “Hey kid” Paul Gobel Without Melinda “Don’t worry about it” Danny Greathouse Being a Democrat “That’s some of the breaks in life Dianna Greathouse Not hollering at Danny “That’s real swift” Karla Grimm Ironing her hair “There’s no sense in that” Tim Haney Without a girl “Ah, Bull” Dennis Hildreth As a centerfold in Playgirl “Now would I do that?” Melinda Kerns Without Paul “You know it” Shirley Layman Flunking out of school “Whatever you want to do” Eugene Marks Not sleeping in class “Straighten up” John Mayle As Daniel Boone “I don’t know” Nancy Mayle Boss at Twin Oaks “Hey man” Earl McCartney Skipping school “I’m square” Bernard McCloy Four foot tall “Wanna fight?” Brenda Police Without Pat “She did” Sheila Police As a country music fan “Tell me about it” Cindy Riffle Cutting class “You drive me Ka-nuts” Barbara Saunders Winning a horse race “Ah, shucks” Gary Shaw With curly hair “Who me?” Kathy Shugars Not voicing her own opinion “You never can tell” Dennis Stewart As a cowboy “Are you for real?” Robert Trimble With long hair “What’s happening?” Diana Whitehair Wearing a dress “What can I say?” Jeff Young Not trucking in his Bronco “What’d ya do that for?” There’s a time to part and a time to meet, There’s a time to sleep and a time to eat, There’s a time to work and a i time to play, There’s a time to sing and a time to pray, There’s a time that’s glad and a time that’s blue. It can be developed and reinforced. Character aids us to pass the tests of life. A brilliant education is a curse to society in the hands of a person without character. The challenges of the seventies call for men and women of unflinching character in every walk of life. Freedom is a great treasure whether it be national, social or personal freedom. Of the many freedoms which Americans enjoy, one is most outstanding and without national or cultural limits spiritual freedom. The apostle Paul commands, “Stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again in the yoke of bondage.” — Fred Nose s c H O O L S T U D E N T S 41 1ST ROW: Barbara Saunders; Sheila Police; Sheila Fragale; Dora Fleming; Dennis Hildreth; Cindy Riffle; Shirley Layman; Kathy Shugars. 2ND ROW: Mrs. Piccolo, Advisor; Brenda Police; Rosie Campbell; Lois Frye; Nancy Mayle; Diana Greathouse; Diana Drainer; Karla Grimm; Carol Bane; Eugene Marks; Earl McCartney. 3RD ROW: Dennis Stewart; Danny Greathouse; Tom Fast; Bill Frum; Virgil Brown; Paul Gobel; Doug Costilow; Gary Shaw; John Mayle; Bobby Trimble. 42 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 1ST ROW: Shirley Layman; Dennis Hildreth; Cindy Riffle; Dora Fleming; Kathy Shugars; Rosie Campbell heila Police 2ND ROW: Susan Glaspell; Robert Knight; Albert Smith; Mr. Cole, Advisor. ALLSTATE There are thousands of high school musicians in West Virginia. Each year a mere handful of selected musicians represent the cream of the musical crop, in performance, at the West Virginia Music Educators Conference. It is a rarity for Class A school to place a musician in this elite group. In previous years the most any one Class A school could place in one year was three students. This record stood until the 73-74 year when Flemington High School placed four students in the West Virginia All-State Band. This year (74-75) Flemington exceeded their own mark by placing five students. In doing so they placed more All-State musicians than any school in West Virginia regard- less of classification with the exception of four class AA schools. This high honor of achievement was accomplished through hard work and dedicated leadership. Some students won more than one year. Graduates who won in previous years were Pat Cochran and Rusty Sayres. 48 Buddy Harr JR. Last year, my first as head coach, we won the sectional title. With three of our starting five returning this year I feel that wc have the talent and with experience can have a successful season. We have only one senior on the squad, so things are looking bright for the future of the Greyhounds. Hopefully we will be able to repeat as sectional champi- ons again this year. Shields, totaled 2660 points in his four seasons. This state record still remains. In 1958 during his senior year the 6 foot sharpshooter scored 1086 points for an amazing 41.8 points per game average. Paul’s single game scoring record was 62 points, but this mark has been topped by Flemington cagers since that time. Bill Cather ripped the nets for 65 points against Coalton in 1966, while a year later Terry Shreves pumped in 64 points for the Greyhounds in a single game. After graduation Paul enrolled and competed in sports at WVU. He left the University after two years when he signed a $42,000 bonus baseball pact with the Chicago Cubs. Paul is now beginning his second year with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 34 year old Popovich batted .217 in limited duty last year. But he finished strong with seven pinch hits in his last 15 pinch-hitting appearances as Pittsburgh drove for the Eastern Division title. Paul also set a league record with three pinch hits in the playoffs. 59 JUNIOR-SENIOR 60 1974 PROM 61 62 63 UNITED CAREER CENTER BUSINESS AND OFFICE Ms. Heim, INSTRUCTOR Sheila Police, Sheila Fragale, Dianna Greathouse Ms. Succurro, INSTRUCTOR Sheila Fragale and Kathy Shugars 65 AIR CONDITIONING Mr. Shaffer, INSTRUCTOR Mike Welty and Tim Haney ELECTRICITY Mr. Palmer, INSTRUCTOR Danny Greathouse and William Frum MACHINE SHOP Mr. Evanto, INSTRUCTOR John Whitehair and Greg Kittle 66 AUTO BODY Mr. Flanagan, INSTRUCTOR AUTO MECHANIC Mr. Saas, INSTRUCTOR Robert Knight David Gobel 67 GRAFTON 1ST ROW: David McCartney; Jim Loudin; Brad Lipscomb; Ray Palmer; Jim Radabaugh; Dick Allen; Terry Green; Randy Kelley; 2ND ROW: Pam Moreland; Jeri Taylor; Donnice Knotts; 3RD ROW: Ldgar Bane; Randy Payne; David Wilfong; I'rances Wilson; David Little; Bill Phillips; Keith Workman; David Snodgrass. While there they learn about the state government and how it works, talk with members of the Board of Public Works, and see the Governor. This year our school was represented by Lorinda Trimble and Buddy Harr. Attending last year from the Junior Class were Shirley Layman and Dennis Hildreth. 69 WEST VIRGINIA COLLEGE CONSTRUCTION BEGAN 1863 This picture thought to have been taken in 1912 shows the grade school students of that time. Near the window lowered from the top: Teachers; Stanley Haller and Lucy Pepper (Payne-McDonald) (Picture courtesy of Mrs. Mildred Springer Edwards) The West Virginia College was discontinued in 1892. It was purchased by the Board of Education of Remington District in 1899. It became the first District High School in the State of West Virginia. This is a picture of an art class taken in the high school sometime before May of 1912. The small boy is Dwayne Cather. From left to right around the table: Osa Springer; Elizabeth Smith; Leah Drainer; Nona Findley; John Traxler; Teacher—Neva West; Nona Batson; Smyth Biggs; Oma Springer; Hattie Smith; and Jessie Lawson. Picture courtesy of Mrs. Mildred Springer Edwards FLEMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL The early history of Flemington dates back to 1730, when it was first settled by Jeremiah Morgan, Janies Davidson, Moses Greathouse, Elijah Powell, Hamilton Cather, James Fleming (for whom the town was named), and Johnson C. Fleming (of early glider fame and on whose property this school is located). In the life of a community there are many men of vision who give of their time and talents to provide the best opportunities possible for their fellow citizens. With $7000, a five acre plot of land, and an early educational dream, construction began in 1863 on West Virginia College. This was the first college granted a charter by the new state of West Virginia. The structure was completed in 1867 by the Free Will Baptist Church which took over the administration of the new school. This school served as one of the most important educational institutions in the state for over a quarter of a century. The school was discontinued in 1892, due to the lack of funds. It was purchased by the Board of Education of Flemington District in 1899. By an overwhelming vote of the local people, at a general election held in 1902, it became the first District High School in the state of West Virginia. It was named College Hill High School. In January 1930, the old college building became a grade school. The high school students were transferred to the present building, which had been under construction since 1928, being financed by Flemington District through a bond floated by residents of the district. With the coming of the County Unit, nearby Simpson High School was discontinued and those students came to Flemington High School. The school grew and since 1937 has been a member of the North Central Association of Accredited Secondary Schools. Throughout the years Flemington High School has had some outstanding basketball teams. At the end of the 1973 season they had a record of 530 wins to 397 losses. Paul Popovich, while a student, broke Jerry West’s record of 1086 points in 27 games. This record still stands as the most points scored in school competition in West Virginia in all classes. When Robert L. Shields, our present Principal, was coach he was chosen two successive years as “Coach of the Year” in the Monongahela Valley Conference. Flemington High School, for a Class A school, ranks high among the number of All-State players chosen through the years. The high school band was organized in the fall of 1947 and has made quite a name for themselves. In April 1973 they were the only band from West Virginia to be entered in the Festival of the Americas held in the Bahamas. They distinguished themselves while there by winning two first place trophies. Boys have been enrolled in the Industrial Arts Program at Grafton High School since September 1948. Our students were given the opportunity for vocational training, in September 1973, at the new United Career Center near Gore in Harrison County. This school is jointly financed by Taylor, Doddridge, and Harrison Counties through Federal Funds. We take pride in the many outstanding students of Flemington High School as they take their place in our society. Former students will be found in every state of the union as well as in many foreign countries busy at their chosen vocation. Many are teachers, doctors, lawyers, merchants, miners, machinists, mechanics, welders, farmers, bankers, government employees, and professional athletes. 72 Flemington High School Teachers 1929-1930 1935-1936 Orin J. This is our record of achievement and our thoughts for the future. As individuals we have tried, in our class momento, to record a little of ourselves as years will cause us to forget. As a class we have tried to leave a good impression. As graduation gets closer, as time goes by, we realize that these have been the greatest days of our lives. By this book I hope we can, one day, look back on them as fond memories. I am very proud to have played an instrumental part in putting together the largest yearbook ever published at Flemington High School. 1 would personally like to thank everyone who has helped with this yearbook. Especially the staff, our advertisers, our subscribers, and our sponsor. Without them it would not have been possible. Also, I would like to wish the best of luck to next year’s Yearbook Staff.
