The Student Council is an organization which seeks to develop the best that is in the student, and which tries in as many ways as possible to make him a well-informed, honest, interested, and active citizen. On November 7th the students elected a Student Council. The two parties who sponsored candidates for the Student Council were The Demo-Publican Party and the Whig Party. After a week of cam- paigning, an assembly was organized for nominating speeches. Demonstrations were held by both parties. After the assembly the elections were held. A constitution was drawn up by the Student Council officers and presented to the Student Coun- cil. Peggy Wilfong was appointed parliamentarian. The body of the Student Council is made up of the president and or secretary of each class and club in the school. Our advisor is Mr. Cleavenger. 20 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY LEFT TO RIGHT, 1ST ROW: Pam Bolyard, Luella Leach, Susan Christian, Larry Riffle, Connie Blake, Kathy Blake, Debbie CottriU. OFFICERS The election of members of this chapter of the National Honor Society shall be by a chapter council, consisting of the principal and members of the faculty. Any member who falls below the standards which were the bases of his election shall be promptly warned. If during the next regular marking period of the school, the member fails to meet the standards used as bases for his election to the Society, his case shall be passed upon by the faculty council. Once a member is dismissed, he is never again eligible for membership in the National Honor Society. The emblem of this Society is the keystone and flaming torch. The keystone bears at its base the letters C, S, L, and S, which stand for the four cardinal principles of its organization: Character, the composite of all common virtures, sets the seal of righteousness upon our every endeavor; Scholarship is the power of the mind to dispel ignorance and superstitution through scientific investigation of truth; Leadership is the power of personality that blazes the trail for man’s upward climb; while Service is the beginning and end of our education. Thus is the emblem of our purpose. To bear forward the searching light of truth, to lead that others may follow in the light, to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring values of life, and to serve these purposes are symbolized in the torch.
