HTSTTRX 0? VHS WEST VIRGINIA COLLEGE In 1363, Reverend Flavicus Cather., a Baptist minister, fcfnaad a joint stock company for the purpose of purchasing a site, erecting a building and maintaining a school of high order at Flemington, Seven thousand dollars were raised far the enterprise. The company pur- chased of Mr. Emory Fleming five acres of land, situated on a beautiful plateau encircled by a chain of lofty hills, about three fourths of a mile east of Flemington on the Baltimore Ohio railroad. Work was begun on the building but the funds were exhausted before the building was completed and ■ the work had to be discontinued. In 1867, the Free Will Baptists purchased the property and continued the work on the building unt il it could be used for school purposes. A charter granting full college powers was obtained by a special act of the legislature, and the name West Virginia College was adopted. Reverend A. B. Wi lliams was elected president. Among tho succeeding presidents were Professor William Colegrove, Reverend David Powell and Reverend Thomas E. Peden, For nearly a quarter of a century this school was one of t he most important educational institut ions in the State, but on'account of lark of financial support it was discontinued in 1892. Mr. Clark Cather and others used the building for subscription schools and summ er normals from 1892 to 1899. HISTORY OF FLEMINGTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL In 1899 the Board of Education of Flemington district was coo -' posed of Michael Graney, president, and Jebediah D. Frum and John M. Ross, commissionerso There'being a demand for additional room for pupils in sub-discrict N0 2, it was decided'by the board to purchase the property known as West'Virginia College, which was then offered for sale for the sum of $2,200. It wa3 used for'the first four years as a two-room district school. Mr. Clark Cather, an excounty superin- tendent, had charge of the advanced grades for the first two years and Mr. Delict Newlon, present county superintendent, for the next two years At the general election in 1902, the question of establishing a district high school was submitted to the boters of Flemington district. It carried by an overwhelming majorit y'and College High'School, the first district high school in tho State, was established. The Board of Education having charge of the school affairs at that time consisted of John B. Cather, president; John M. Ross and F. Baxter Haller,'Commissioner3. At the July meeting of the board in 1903, Mr. J„ E, Shrader was chosen as the first principal of the College High School. About twenty’pupils were enrolled, fivo of whan graduated at the close of the tern. Mr, Shrader was employed for the second year. The enrollment was about twenty—five. Four pupils graduated. Mr . Louis M. Snyder was chosen principal in 1905; thirty—nine pupils were enrolled, four of whom graduated. At the close of the term Mr. Snyder resigned to accept a position in a bank at Morgantown, and as t he increased number of pupils seemed to demand it, the Board of Education decided to employ two teachers for the year 2 1906-7. Accordingly Mr. Frank J. Tracy was elected principal and Mr. Edwin Tomblyn, assistant. Fifty-four pupils were enrolled; six graduated. The following year with the same teachers the enrollment reached fifty-nine, the largest in the history of the school. Eleven pupils graduated at the close of the term. In 1908, Mr. J. N. Fries was elected principal, and Mr. E. W. Kenedy, assistant. The enrollment was somewhat less than it had been and no pupils were graduated, but substantial progress was made. In 1909, Mr. S. Orestes Bond was chosen as principal and Mr. Frank S. White, assistant. That year the course of study was made somewhat broader and the subject of Agriculture was given a prominent place. Among other innovations for the year was a District Agricultural Exhibit, which, with the aid of Professor Daniel W. Working and others from the West Virginia College of Agriculture, was made one of the most interesting and instructive features of the year. With the same teachers the following year which is the one just closing, this feature assumed still larger proportions. This year the course of study was made more comprehensive, the study of music was introduced and a pian« was purchased by the school. At the close of the year three young people received diplomas of graduation. It is, perhaps, only just to say that the character and attainment f the young people who have attended the High School, furnish abundant proof of the wisdom of the people in maintaining a DISTRICY HIGH SCHOOL 1902 College Hill High School was established July 1903. CLASS HISTORY On September 5, 1961, the Flemington High School received the 7th. grade Bulldogs who will be long remembered. The 7th. grade was a year of adjust- ment for us, in which we became familiar with the high school, and forgot our grade school days and concentreated on our school studies. That year the class officers were elected as follows: President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Jim Kinsey Elbert ’Vagner Russel Greathouse Terry Shreve One of the most exciting activities was the class tournaments in which the 7th. grade boys' basketball team won the Jr. High Championship. So ended our first year at F.H.S. The summer venation ended and back to F.H.S. we came. This was the second year on the hill and now we knew a little more about the school. There was great excitement when we elected our class officers as follows: President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Historian Sue Stout Terry Shreve Jim Kinsey Gary George Tony Smith We waited for this year to get a chance at the Golden Horseshoe Contest, but before we could enter we had to pass a Junior Citizenship Test. Nine members of the class became eligible for it, but Flemington had no county winners. Again the most exciting thing was the class tournaments, in which the girls and boys both captured the Jr. High Championships. So ended another year at F.H.S. In the fall of 1963 we returned to F.H.S., not as before, but in a L different way because this year we were freshmen and classified as high school students. This year was a very interesting one. Our class officers were: President Vice President Treasurer Secretory Historian Beverly Phelps Terry Shreve Jim Kinsey Sandy Knotts Tony Smith That year we took a trip to Grafton and met most of the county officials. Our trip was made through the efforts of Mrs. J.P. Murphy, civics teacher, who was taking Urs. Carnet's place when she was ill. That year we held one of the best school programs. So came the end of another year at F.H.S. The sophomore class of 1964-65 had another fruitful year at F.H.S., in which the sophomores took a great part in school activities, like band, in which we had l ! members and 3 major-tt.:6. The majorettes were Beverly Phelps, Linda Jenes, and Sue Shaga. In sporis one of the school cheerleaders was Crystal Spencer and our varsity basketball team had 3 sophomore members. They were Terry Shreve, Jim Kinsey, and John Gibson. Our class officers were as follows: President Beverly Phelps; Vice President Jim Kinsey; Secretary Jim Gibson; Treasurer Rosemary Williams; Historian Sandy Knotts. CLASS HISTORY (cont.) Now we were lockirg forward to the next year when we would become juniors. Tfie junior class of 1965-66 had a F.H.S. Our class officers were: President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Historian very successful and important year at Beverly Phelps Terry Shreve Rosemary Williams Jim Gibson Tony Smith The Class play, a presentation of Tobacco Road with Detours, was acclaimed as one of the best assembly programs ever. The junior year turned out to be a money-raising year in which $1,009.53 worth of magazines was sold. The top salesmen were Marlene Leach and Jim Gibson. We had many various ways of collecting money that ye r. Wc had many people participating in different school activities, such as the band with six members of the junior class. The majorettes were Liz Carder, Linda Jones Beverly Phelps, and Sue Shaga. The basketball team was helped by the junior class in using Terry Shreve, Tony Smith, Jim Kinsey, John Gibson, and Skip Sheets and the scorekeeper was Marlene Leach. Diana Justice was ticket-seller during the basketball season. Crystal Spencer was one of the school cheerleaders. Diana Justice and J±m Kinsey represented the school at Know Your State Government Day at Charleston, West Virginia, and Rosemary Williams attended Rhododendron Girls' State. Terry Shreve attended Mountaineer Boys' State. Rosemary Williams was the county winner in What Democracy Means to Me. The main event of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom with the theme of Stairway to the Stars. The juniors spent many long hours on it, but everyone thought it was worth it. So ended our Junior year at F.H.S. The senior year finally arrived for us and it started off with a bang as usual with the 16-67 class. The class officers were elected as follaws: President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Historian Beverly Phelps Terry Shreve Jim Gibson Rosemary Williams Jim Kinsey This year our class plans the senior trip to Niagara Falls and Canada for which we are planning various money-making activities. Yfe are looking for- ward to the Junior-Senior Prom. Vie have many members participating in school activities. We have 12 members in the band and the majorettes are Liz Carder, Sue Shaga, and Beverly Phelps. The seniors on the Greyhound team who will play their last basketball game for F.H.S. this year are Terry Shreve, Tony Smith, Jim Kinsey, John Gibson and Skip Sheets, the scorekeeper is Marlene Leach and the ticket-seller is Diana Justice. One of the varsity cheerleaders is Crystal Spencer. The senior class is proud to say that Beverly Phelps is the district winner in the contest, What Democarcy Means to Me. Mow we are looking forward to that day we have been waiting for, for 12 years, and are rapidly approaching. We are looking at graduation with a look of happiness because we are finally reaching that one goal in life, but also sad because we will miss all the joyful happenings at Flemington High School. At this time the seniors of 66-67 wish to thank the. principal and teachers of Flemington High for all the wonderful opportunities they I 4 CLASS HISTORY (cont.) have made possible for as. We hope we have left a good impression on F.H.S. that will last forever, so that when people will look back, they can proudly say, that was the class of 1966-67.
