HISTORY 07 THE '.VEST VIRGINIA COLLEGE In 1S63, Reverend Flavious Gather, a Baptist minister, formed a joint stock company for the purpose of purchasing a site, erecting a building and maintaining a school of highorder at Flemington. Seven thousand dollars were raised f i- the enterprise. The company pur- chased from Mr. Emory Fleming five acres of land, situated on a beauti- ful plateau encircled by a chain of lofty hills, about three fourths of a mile east of Flemington on the Baltimore Ohio railroad. Work was begun on the building but the funds were exhausted before the building was completed and the work had to be discontinued. In 1867, the Free Will Baptists purchased the property and continued the work on the building until it could be used for school purposes. A charter granting full college powers was obtained by a special act of the legislature and the name West Virginia College was adopted. Reverend A. B. Williams was elected president. Among the succeeding presidents were Professor William Colegrove, Reverend ”'r vid Powell and Reverend . E. Peden. For nearly a quarter of a century this school was one of the most important educational institutions in the State, but on account of lack of financial support it was discontinued in 1892. Ur. Clark Cather and others used the building for subscription schools and stammer normals from 1892 to 1899. HISTORY OF FLEMINGTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL In 1899 the Board of Education of Flemington district was composed of Michael Graney, president, and Jebediah D. Frum and John M. Ross, commissioners. There being a demand for additional room for pupils in sub—district No. 2, it was decided by the board to purchase the property known as West Virginia College, which was then.offered for sale for the sum of $2 200. It was used for the exccunty superintendent, had charge of the advanced grades for the first two years and Mr. Dellet Newlon, present county superintendent, for the next two years. At the general election in 1902, the question of establishing a district high school was submitted to the voters of Flemington district. It carried by an overwhelming majority and College High School, the first district high schcol in the State, was established. The Board of Education having charge of the school affairs at that time consisted of John B. Cather, president; John M. Ross and F. Baxter H aller. Commissioners. At the July meeting of the board in 1903, Mr. J. E. Shrader was chosen as the first principal of the College High School. About twenty pupils were enrolled, five of whcm graduated at the cl se of the term. Mr. Shrader was employed for the second year. The enrollment was about twenty-five. Four pupils graduated. Mr. Louis M. Snyder was chosen principal in 1905; thirty-nine pupils were enrolled, four of whom graduated. At the close of the term Mr. Snyder resigned to accept a position in a bank at Morgan- town, and as the increased number of pupils seemed to demand it, the Board of Education decided tc employ two teachers for the year 2 1906-7. Accordingly Mr. Frank J. Tracy was elected principal and Mr. W Edwin Tonblyn, assistant. Fifty-four pupils were enrolled; six graduat- ed. The following year with the same teachers the enrollment reached fifty-nine, the largest in the history of the school. Eleven pupils graduated at the close of the term. In 1908, Mr. J. N. Fries was elected principal, and Mr. E. W. Kene- dy, assistant. The enrollment was somewhat less than it had been and no pupils were graduated, but substantial progress was made. In 1909, Mr. S. Orestes Bend was chosen as principal and Mr. Frank S. White, assistant. That year the course of study was made somewhat broader and the subject of Agriculture was given a prominent place Among other innovations for the year was a District Agricultural Ex- hibit, which, with the aid of Professor Daniel W, Working and others from the West Virginia College of Agriculture, wasnade one of the most interesting and instructive features of the year. With the same teachers the following year which is the one just closing, this feature assumed still larger proportions. This year the course of study was made more comprehensive, the study of music was introduced and a piano was purchased by the school. At the close of the year three young people received diplomas of graduation. It is, perhaps, only just to say that the character and attainment of the young people who have attended the High School, furnish abundant proof of the wisdom of the people in maintaining a DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. 1904 CUSS OF 1908 1913 1 Mabel D. At last the pages of our yearbook is closed Our high school days have come to end We walk away from dear ole F.H.S. .And bid farewell, good luck to each friend. It is the last time our class will climb these steps It is the last time we'll trod these '.alls Or greet our teachers with a smile Or look at the pictures on the walls. But we sill have so many fond memories Of happiness and of fears We have so much to remember From our past six happiest years. CLASS HISTORY That Wor.d3vf.il Yrv.r of 1962 Seniors we were destined to be Small, frightened but mightily This was the first of our four challenging years But we would make it, through toil or tears It was early that September morning when fifty nine freshmen assembled at Flemington High School. Tiis year what we achieved would really count, some of us would be left by the wayside while others would grasp each wrung of the ladder of success with deep determination. That Wonderful Year of 1963 As tophmores we were feeling bolder and determined to make ourselves known. We began the year by having two of our sophmores Mary Gibson and Brenda Riffle enter the contest on What the United Nations Mean to Me , competing with several juniors. We were proud to have Brenda Riffle chosen as winner and delegate to the United Nations in New York City for one week. Our boys weren't about to let us down as Richard Collins made the varsity basketball scuad and selected for the all tournament team at the Regionals. Roger Spencer also contributed much to the Greyhounds that year. We presented the Easter Chaple Program under the Direction of Mr. John Findley. We closed another successful year with a Pizza Party as our class party. That Wonderful Year of 1964 As juniors, this was to begin our fund-raising projects. For our first project we launched a magazine drive. We set our goal a 600.00 and went over. This was more than any of the preceding classes had ever made thanks to Gloria Preston and Jerry Turnbull, our high salesmen. Cnee again one of our classmates, Jerry Turnbull won the United Nations Speech Contest and a week in New York City. The talent show beckoned seven of us juniors. We did a dance routine to Eefanany , although we didn't win the contest, we enjoyed every moment of it. Basketball season rolled around once again with Richard Collins and Roger Spencer on the varsity. Sheldon Findley contributed much with Connie Wyckoff as scorekeeper and Sherry Devart as one of the varsity cheerleaders. Our delegates to Jacksons Mill Rhododendron Girl State and Mountaineer Boys State were Mary Kay Cather and Richard Collins. Brenda Riffle and Sheldon Findley attended Charleston on Know Your State Government Day. The big event of the year finally approached on May 2, the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme wa3 Roman Holiday, although it took a lot of work, we had fun and it was successful, thanks to the kind assistance of Mrs. Piccolo. Another year was trough to an end as we looked anxiously ahead to our senior year. • • I . i •; CLASS HISTORY (CCNT.) That Wonderful Year of 1?65 Who could ever believe ve are seniors? Cur next trip tco us to St. ugustine which proved to be victorious with a score of £7-54. Again Pickens fell to the Greyhounds as well as Beverly and the Industrial School. The Mighty Greyhounds suffered their first defeat at ihe hands of St. Patricks of Weston. They fought a hara battle but lost it by a score of 73-62. Our team went on to regain its composure by winning over the Alumni with 78-56. The second month of the season opened on the Jan. 4, with a hard fought battle with the Salem Cubs. Our boys rocked up 68 points as oalem trailed with an uneasy 67. Our boys worked with all faithfullness to extend our running streak. The next 8 teams we met were downed by our Greyhounds including Bristol, Coalton, Mountaineer, Industrial School, Beverly,, St. Augustine, Bristol, and Salem. The second disappointment of the season came when Coalton slid by the Greyhounds at Coalton with a score of 70-72. It was a close and exciting game as our tpys gave all they had. This was the second and final loss of the season. Rebounding from the defeat, the Greyhounds sought revenge over St. Patricks. With an easy margin, our boys came out ahead at the final buzzer by a score of 103-73. Next, the Maroons of St. Peters invaded Flemington but with ever deeper determination, the Greyhounds slipped past with a 72-71 victory in which proved to be a thriller to the large turn-out. The Greyhounds closed out their regular season against Mountaineer and carae out victorious by a landslide margin of 98-73. Another successful season was brought to a close as the 64-65 Greynounds maintained on 18-2 record and were eligible to enter the Section'! Tournament at Bridgeport, West Virginia. The first tournament game against Bristol was hard fought to the finish with Flemington coming out on top 74-72 in overtime play. The next game was against Lumberport for the championship title. Trying with all their might, the game ended v ith Lumberport 65 and Flemington 57- We ware prouu to have ttichard Collins and Bill Gather make the all-tournament team. We wisn to congratulate the boys and mr. Shields for a job well done. i ADVERTISING ALUMNI 1929-30 1933-34 toont.) 1936-37 1. Dorotny rijfcLufan 7. Maxine Snyder 1.
