We are the people who, after four years in train- ing, are now ready to “turn pro.” In our experiences with each other and with our teachers we have learn- ed the necessity of teamwork and practice. An account of our experiences the first two years here would perhaps seem uneventful to anyone but us. However, the memories of this period are espec- ially significant to us in that this was the time when we were making new friends among ourselves. We were proud to be in high school and were full of enthusiasm for the opportunities we found there. The junior year was marked by the publication of what we felt was an outstanding school newspaper. But the one event perhaps most to be remembered A Senior Speaks ... . In October 1957, the launching of the first artificial earth satellite was credited to the U.S.S.R. In search- ing for a scapegoat on which to place the blame for the failure of the United States to achieve this honor, Americans began to scrutinize the public school system. After years of apathy people brought numer- ous criticisms and complaints along with a few con- structive ideas for correction of the “faults” of our schools. It was suggested that increased emphasis be Page Eight was the Junior-Senior. “Club ‘58” had a fine floor show with many acts, planned and impromptu. The long-awaited senior year has brought the inevitable fund-raising efforts and a realization that our stay here is drawing to a close. At this writing we can be proud of the many members of our class who have won places at the annual Scholastic Field Days at Western Carolina College; also among our number we find a county winner in the Voice of Democracy Contest and three semifinalists in National Merit Scholarship competition. We feel confident that these and other unmentioned achievements merely mark the beginning of successes and honors for The Class of 1959. placed on sound academic and physical development of students and less on social development. The benefits, if there are to be any, of these efforts to improve public educational facilities will come too late for us, the graduating class. It is to be hoped that we as citizens shall face more seriously the res- ponsibilities of American citizenship than have voters of the past decade. Scott D. Ward
