Student Council Officers—Left to right: Theresa Jones, Ray Phillips, Beatrice Saunders STUDENT COUNCIL The purposes of student government in Flat Rock High School are: “1. To build within the students an attitude of friend- ship and loyalty to each other and to the school that will make living together a pleasure and an educational ex- perience of the utmost value. 2. To provide means whereby all students may par- ticipate in the planning and execution of school activities— civic, social, and athletic. 3. To assist the faculty in the development among all students of a high concept of self-discipline and respon- sibility without which no school can function in such a manner as to offer much of educational worth. 4. To gain the confidence, respect, and support of the whole community by proving our willingness and ability to work together as a student body.” The Student Council has had as its project the “Work Week” which was a success. We have had chapel pro- grams to boost the student’s cooperation in participating in school activities. We hope that in years to come, this form of student government will grow and become one of the most suc- cessful activities this school will have. BETA CLUB The purpose of the Beta Club is to encourage effort, to promote character, to stimulate achievement, to cultivate leadership qualities, to reward merit, and to en- courage and assist students to continue their education after high school graduation. Before a student is eligible for membership in the Beta Club, he must make an average of 85 on all his subjects in the ninth and tenth grades and be approved by the faculty. The Beta Club became a “Banner Club” this year when it installed a new chapter at Fletcher, N. C. A Beta Club pennant was presented to our chapter for this recognition by the National Beta Club. Officers of the Beta Club this year are: President, Theresa Jones; Vice-Presi- dent, Jock Blois; Secretary-Treasurer, Wilma Sherman.
