The PARADE (949 The 1949 PARADE JOCK BLOIS — Editor-in-Chief THOMAS HILL — Associate Editor d ae Through this, the 1949 edition of THE Parape, the staff has endeav- ored to portray the daily parade of student life and activity at Flat Rock School. The staff has tried to present information and material that will interest the alumni and citizens of the community, and that will help students in future years to relive many happy experiences of this year. Some of its members have a yearly job with the editing of “The Rocket’, the school paper. The Parade Staff is always made up of Seniors, also. In Dec., 6-11, Work Week was observed by all classes in the school for the purpose of raising money to help defray expenses. The Seniors contributed $45.25. On December 16, we journeyed to Bob Jones University at Greenville, S. C., to see the dramatic club of that school present the Shakespearean drama “As You Like It.” A box of clothing and toys were sent to a German girl named Christa Jahn who lives in Bremerhaven, Germany. It was hoped that she would receive the box before Christmas. Three other boxes of fruit, groceries, and canned goods were distributed in the com- munit y at Christmas time. The annual Junior-Senior banquet was held in the high school gymnasium on May Sth. The menu, decorations and program cleverly carried out the theme—“A May flower garden.” Senior Day was a weekend this year spent at Myrtle Beach, May 13th. The Senior play, “Dangerous Decision,” was presented in the school auditorium, under the direction of Mrs. Susie Sinclair, on May 19th and 20. ‘The cast is shown on page 41. Student Council Officers—Left to right: Theresa Jones, Ray Phillips, Beatrice Saunders STUDENT COUNCIL The purposes of student government in Flat Rock High School are: “1. To build within the students an attitude of friend- ship and loyalty to each other and to the school that will make living together a pleasure and an educational ex- perience of the utmost value. 2. To provide means whereby all students may par- ticipate in the planning and execution of school activities— civic, social, and athletic. 3. To assist the faculty in the development among all students of a high concept of self-discipline and respon- sibility without which no school can function in such a manner as to offer much of educational worth. 4. To gain the confidence, respect, and support of the whole community by proving our willingness and ability to work together as a student body.” The Student Council has had as its project the “Work Week” which was a success. We have had chapel pro- grams to boost the student’s cooperation in participating in school activities. We hope that in years to come, this form of student government will grow and become one of the most suc- cessful activities this school will have. BETA CLUB The purpose of the Beta Club is to encourage effort, to promote character, to stimulate achievement, to cultivate leadership qualities, to reward merit, and to en- courage and assist students to continue their education after high school graduation. Before a student is eligible for membership in the Beta Club, he must make an average of 85 on all his subjects in the ninth and tenth grades and be approved by the faculty. The Beta Club became a “Banner Club” this year when it installed a new chapter at Fletcher, N. C. A Beta Club pennant was presented to our chapter for this recognition by the National Beta Club. Officers of the Beta Club this year are: President, Theresa Jones; Vice-Presi- dent, Jock Blois; Secretary-Treasurer, Wilma Sherman. F.F.A. OFFICERS—Left to right: B. Duncan, H. Halford, T. Hill., President; Mr. Franklin, Advisor; G. McCarson, K. Summey, J. Staton. FUTURE “Learning to Do Doing to Learn Earning to Live Living to Serve.” It is the purpose of the F.F.A. to develop competent, aggressive, rural and agricultural leadership, to encourage intelligent choice of farming occupations, to develop character, train for useful citizenship, and foster patriot- ism. It is also our purpose to participate in cooperative effort, and to encourage improve- ment in scholarship. What are the “Ag” boys doing to carry out these aims? Following is a bird’s-eye view of some of their activities. Several of our boys entered their fine reg- istered Guernsey stock in three Dairy Shows last fall. The first show was in Henderson- ville, N.C. The boys came through with flying colors and won several ribbons including the Grand Championship for one of the animals. The second show was held at the W. N. C. Fair. Again our boys made a fine showing by win- ning several ribbons and over $100 in cash prizes. The final Dairy Show was the Western FARMERS OF AMERICA Carolina Junior Dairy Cattle Show which was held in Asheville, N. C. Our boys also put samples of their projects in the W. N. C. Fair as exhibits in the F.F.A. booth. When the boys’ corn crops were checked this fall, they proved that dairying was not the only enterprise that they could excell in. Their corn crops turned out yields up to 137.7 bushels per acre: These activities that are carried on by the individual members are not, however, the only F.F.A. activities. During the year the follow- ing contests are held at the different schools which make up the Federation: Ritual Contest, Public Speaking Contest, Field Day Contests, Shop Contest, Crops Contest, and Livestock and Dairy Judging Contests. These contests are entered by a selected team or an individual from each school’s chapter. Many of these contests are carried on through state and national contest groups, made up from the winners in the lower groups. Thomas Hill, President OFFICERS—On steps, left to right: C. Cronic, B. The purposes of the F.H.A. are: 1. To promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of homemaking. 2. To emphasize the importance of worthy home membership. a 3. ‘To encourage democracy in home and community life. Freeman, M. A. Hefner, M. Smith, S. Smith, e Perry, TanlonessaR: ‘Lockaby, J. Paces, b. THE BEAM One of our newest and most outstanding clubs in the school is the Y.O.B. or the Youth on the Beam Club. The club was organized by the boys and girls of Flat Rock High School and is entirely a student project. Clubs of a similar nature have sprung up in several of the other high schools in Henderson County. The aim of the club is to present high school students with a challenge to “get on the beam” for Christ. To those who are born again it serves as a means to develop their talents and to help others. To others, it presents a youth-appealing program beamed to the interests and desires of modern youth, One of the special services of the Y.O.B. is the direction of the chapel programs. These programs feature religious singing and scripture reading.
