vi 'I ik -' 'file -, -J- FAREWELL TO FLAT ROCK HIGH SCHOOL By Carolyn Wilson Farewell to Flat Rock High School. Let me tell you her story. On a beautiful fall morning in 1893 the first students entered the doors of a new school building to become the first graduating class of Flat Rock High School, Only a few were enrolled then, but as time went on the number increased and the need for more room became a necessity, So, in 1926 a new section was added to the old building, Old and new she has stood for many years and never complained a bit. The tramping of hundreds of feet over her floors, the complaints of students because they had to come to school, the echo of doors slammed, and the crashing of balls through her windows have never fazed her. After all these years of rough treatment and storms, she's still in pretty good condition. Sometimes her roof leaks a little when it rains, but a few buckets here and there remedy this problem. Let me tell you more of the extra curricular activities. The first big event of the year is the school party, At this time students run up and down the stairs yelling, sliding down the fire escape, and eating until they altnost pop, Next comes the basketball season with excitement mounting throughout the winter terminating with the sectional tourney. Christmas is always a happy, joyful occasion at F, R. H. S. with an all-school program, gift exchange, and treats for all, In the spring come initiation, the senior play, track meets, studying for finals, spring fever, and the most important of all -- the much anticipated senior trip, For four years the seniors work hard with the help of faculty, parents, and friends to make enough money to spend a week seeing New York and Washington, Underclassmen and faculty miss them but such restful loneliness! ! Baccalaureate and Commencement highlight the final closing days of the school year. Many students have sat on the stage and in retrospect found that their school days were extremely happy ones with many fond memories, But as the graduates of 1958 take their places Commencement night, they will realize that while their diplomas sig- nify the closing of the high school doors at Flat Rock High School, they also mean the opening of the doors to greater op- portunity in education for succeeding classes at the new Southwestern High School,
