We've crowned the Homecoming royalty, won the District basketball tournament, taken tests, and listened to class lectures. Our students participated in numerous activities beginning with class elections and homecoming to the prom and graduation. Students have come and gone, and each of them have added to the memories that make this school year. As you look through this year's annual, you will share some of these memories of the 76-77 school year. 2 Student Life Vv At Top are the Seniors while working on the Rock . At Left is Rhonda Headrick in her usual apparel. Above is Kevin Wilson controlling the sound system to record the chorus concert. Student Life 3 In Our Spare Time At FHS there are many things going on, but there are times when we can spend our time doing noth- ing. Times like sleeping, being rowdy In study hall, skipping class, at our lockers, or just sitting down relaxing and watching time pass by. At Right is Bill Burrell fighting with Mary Lynn Jepsen In study hall. Above Are; Mary Anne Jensen, Audrey Paulsen, Kathy Amburn, Kris Jorgenson, Margaret Parsley, Becky Bean, and Anita Sutton enjoying their childhood on the teeter-totters. After hours kids meet up town at Courts Corner to play pinball, foozeball, and pool. On Tuesday and Thursday nights there are slow pitch games down at the city park. Many kids get together and party, just sit around and talk, or watch the games. Occasionally there are teen dances at the Japanese Gardens and at the Trent Gym. If there Isn't a dance the kids just cruise around in their cars. 8 Student Life Good Times At Top, Opposite Page, are Lee Severtson, Laurie Threadgold, Kathl Oldenkamp, Jane McDowell, Scott LaPlante, and Mark Gageby watching the softball games at the city park. Dirty tricks like setting and wiring lockers are done. Dates are lined up for the weekend. The electives, German I-IU, Forensics, and Ad- vanced Speech, are used by our student body to satisfy special interests they may have. The library may be used to do research work, or for leisure time to read magazines and newspapers. U.S. History, Government, Economics, and World History are also required of our students during the last three years of school. At Top is Dave Johnson trying to find a magazine art i c I e for Econ. Above are (1) Julie Price looking at the latest fashions; (2) Dwayne Schoneman reading a newspaper; and (3) Melvin Kiecksee and John Pray enjoying their leisure time in the library. PE is required in the first two years of high school and is an elective after that. Music involves vocal and instrumental. Individuals who have an interest in this area are given lessons by their instructors. We require one unit of mathematics and one unit of science for our students to graduate. Our students may fill this requirement from these courses: Biology, General Science, Algebra, Chemistry, Advanced Algebra, Senior Math, and Physics. Top Left are Craig Barnes and Alan Jones practicing for Swing choir. Above is Brian Bonde relaxing after marching practice. When our school opened its doors in the fall, a new concept had been added. The East Central Multi-District Vocational School also opened in Brookings. The student body of this school is made up of students from Flandreau, Sioux Valley, Brookings, and Duebrook. Courses in the areas of Building Trades, Auto Mechanics, Health Occu- pations, Business Education and Electronics are offered. The main thought behind this concept is to help the student make a future vocational selection. The business and vocational courses offered here at our school are Bookkeeping, Typing, Shorthand, Home Economics, Agriculture, Industrial Arts, and Art. 4 Top Right is Barb Eikmeier, typing at vocational school. Students in forensics attend meets through out the State. In the language area, German I, II, and III, are offered. The instructor provides variety in his classes by involving his students in related activities. They attended the Octoberfest in Sioux Falls this year. The projects required of all students are made of either wood or metal and displayed at an open house held each Spring. Home economics and agriculture are offered to help our students become acquainted with new ideas in the area of farm living. Many who live in town also enjoy the Home Ec. classes that provide the basics for cooking, sewing, budget making, etc. Vocations, Our Area The East Central Multi-District Vocational School, a new addition to our high school program, is held for two hours each day at Brookings. Our students attend this school along with other students from high schools located at Sioux Valley, Brookings, and Duebrook. To attend the vocational school, our students must leave here after their first hour classes. A halfhour bus ride gets them to the vocational school for their classes there. When their classes are over, they return home to eat dinner before going to their fifth hour classes in the high school. Trades taught at the vocational school help to ac- quaint the students with the pros and cons of that particular trade. At Top Right is Mr. Jim Adkins, who teaches Electronics. These bus drivers have a big responsibility for transporting the students. To meet this responsibil- ity, they are required to pass a written test as well as a driving test to be qualified for this job. The custodians who work in our school must keep the school building and its grounds clean and neat. They, also, care for the football stadium and its field. We have an engineer who keeps the air-condition- ing heating plant running smoothly. He, also, is responsible for taking care of two other buildings and their plants.
