The Flyer Staff Presents The 1971 - 1972 Flyer Flandreau Fligh School Flandreau, South Dakota Foreward The theme of our yearbook is Color My World with music. This theme is started on the cover, designed by Karen Jones, and is carried throughout the yearbook by using song titles as our headlines. The editors and staff of the 1971-72 yearbook hope that when you hear the songs, memories of these years will return. A time for excitement, joy, and anticipation. The candidates for Homecoming King and Queen were: Susan Ekem, Denis Parsley, Debbie Whipkey, Mike Halter, Joan Fargen, Bob Keck, Lani Julson, Steve Millman, Margo Headrick, and DeVere Heakrick. The student body selected Joan Fargen and DeVere Headrick to reign over the Festivities. To raise the spirits for the football game the tradition- al bonfire was held with a march uptown afterwards. 5 Following the excitment and wonder of the coronation ceremony, shown by the faces of the candidates, Joan Fargen and DeVere Headrick were crowned as our King and Queen. The Seniors followed tradition and painted the rock in the South- east parking lot. This year the rock and base were painted light purple and the year 1972 and the word Seniors in dark purple, which was also outlined in gold. The seniors motto, WeVe Only Just Begun was also done in dark purple along the base. The rock design was created by Karen Jones. The Seniors also painted rocks and formed a huge 72 on the side of the West hill, which can be seen from the highway. These rocks were gathered by the Seniors and carried one by one up to the top of the hill. The Homecoming dance was also a great success after the foot- ball game, with the Nickle Bag of Soul providing the music. The memories of Homecoming this year will always be remem- bered by everyone, especially the Seniors. 6 7 Listen to the Band FLUTES BASS CLARINETS Dale Christensen Janis Rahn Jarolyn Johnson Tim Beatty Linny Lyford Shirley Sneve Jerry Hoss Becky Beatty CONTRA CLARINET (Bb) Chuck Sutton Diane Ludgate Sheri Gulbranson Laurie Bock Brenda Powers Lani Julson Dwight Gullickson Julie Keating OBOE BARIT ON HORN Jean Neprud Cindy Lyford Jan Gullickson Juve Ann Knee bone ALTO SAXOPHONES Gayle Peterson Ed Hofkamp Shirley Pray Ron McMahon Bb CLARINETS Debbie Severtson BASSES Sandy Landis Joan Fargen Louie Otey Susan Ekem Cathy Hoss Kevin Blum Debbie Whipkey Laura Paulsen Janet Stuedeman Pat Nelson TROMBONES Kim LaPlante Kim Duncan Mari lee Solem TENOR SAXOPHONES Bob Schmidt Janis Neprud Rita McMahon Mike Swensen Renee Ramsdell Robin Whitsell Hal Otey Linda Gullickson Darwin Spear Nancy Dusek BARITONE SAXOPHONE Lorie Stahl Pat McMahon PERCUSSION Debbie Cloud Bob Keck Renee Jones FRENCH HORNS DeVere Headrick Darci Dappen Marda Powers Kerry Thomas Babs Keck Karen Jones Larry Hanson Calla Hogue Steve Mach Brian Cox Charla Blandenier Chris Pottratz David Lee Teresa Rupe Kent Luttmann La Rae Rose CORNETS Jay Olsen Debbie Johanson Becky Schmidt Jim Jepsen Julene Tjarks Dave Swenson Linda Jacobson Julie Chnstad Tom Jorgensen James Heirtz DIRECTOR ALTO CLARINETS Ronald Lorensberg Coral Stahl Paul Sampson Roxee Jones Dave Ekem 8 The members of the brass choir are (FRONT ROW): Louie Otey, Becky Schmidt, Mike Swenson, Kim Duncan and Karen Jones. The Flandreau High Student Body was in very high spirit this year, with the help of the Pep Club. By giving their spirited skits at the pep rallies and Little Orpheum and with their amusing and faithful posters the pep club backed the Fliers. The pep club worked very hard to earn money to sponsor a dance. They sold decals and cushions. They also patrolled the stadium during the game. 12 I’ve Found Someone The Pep Club once again sponsored a Sadie Hawkins Dance. It was held at Spafford on March 27, at 8:00. As usual it was girls' night, the girls asked the boys and also paid for the evening. The ride livened up the dance with special lighting effects and their music. 13 The editors of the 1971-72 Annual Staff, pictured at left are: Chief Editor - Coral Stahl, Co-Editor - Susan Brook, Faculty- Becky Beatty, Activities - Gloria Iverson, Athletics - Kathy Buchholtz, and Honors, Grads, and Seniors - Babs Keck. The Junior Class pre- sented the 1972 Banquet - Prom, Roman HolidayM, on May 13. The Banquet was held at the United Methodist Church. A Roman mural provided a colorful setting. Babs Keck and Bob Keck were chosen to reign over the Banquet and Prom. Their court consisted of Pat Johnson, Jane Schmidt, Jani Wenge, DeVere Headrick, Les Heinemann, and Steve Mach. The King and Queen's throne was decorated with green and gold streamers, which hung from white Roman pillars. 25 The Prom dance was held at the Spafford gym, which was beautifully decorated after many long hours of hard work done by the Juniors. Carrying out the theme of the Prom, a Roman fountain was used as the picture area. It was adorned with flowers and a statued head on a pillar. The punch bowl was decorated as a trophy cup highlighted with yellow in orange pomps. Punch bowl servers were Rita Ailts and Laurie Stahl, who were dressed as Roman maidens. 26 The Wonderband provided the music for the From. As a fitting setting there was a huge mural behind the stage of a Roman countryside. While not dancing couples sat at tables lit with soft candle- light. Roman pillars decorated with ivy and gold rope separated the tables from the dance floor. As a final touch to the evening there was a breakfast held at the KC Hall, given by the Junior Mothers. 'This magic moment of Prom will always be remembered by the juniors and especially the Seniors. 28 Dragging The Line The members of the Varsity and Junior Varsity football teams are (FRONT ROW): Randy Oldenkamp, Bill Fargen, Craig Schliinz, Terry Nelson, Don Dappen, Steve Ullom, Kent Luttman, Tim Mach. They fell to the skill of the Canton C-Hawks and the Vermillion Tangers, two non-conference teams. In conference action, only one team was able to score on the Flier defense. This enabled the Fliers to win the conference trophy with a 5-0 record. Offensively, in the rushing and passing depart- ments, the Fliers averaged twice the yardage of their opponents. The seniors led the scoring this year as follows: Bob Keck, seventy points; DeVere Headrick, fifty-five; and Steve Ramsdell, forty-four. The A and B squad football coaches are Dann Cecil, Jim McGlone, John Evans. Not pictured, Robert Andrea. They were rewarded for their efforts by bringing the team the title of conference champs.
