Advisor Theme: 'SHOOTING FOR THE STARS In Memoriam NOBLE HANSON The students of Flandreou High School suffered a severe loss in the death of a man who foryears sought to improve their educational opportunities and their chances for success in life. Sincere sympathies are extended in memory of Mr. Noble L. Hanson who served as a member of the Board of Education of this school district for four years. Mr. Hanson was also an active member in social, civic, and church affairs of this community. But he will be remembered long- est by the young women and men of the community for the contribution to the school he served. ADMINISTRATION Superintendent Sylvan Vigness and Mrs. English Our school is dedicated to the purpose of helping each student develop into the best person he is capable of becoming. It is our purpose to train for future citizenship. We seek to provide children with an op- portunity to seek knowledge and skill in all fields of human endeavor. We must equip them with a sense of moral and civic responsibility and to apply this knowledge to the betterment of living within their areas of influence. THE MEN WHO MAP OUR COURSE A good education is worthwhile and highly necessary in this modern world. Your life work will be greatly influenced by the ed- ucation that you receive while in high school. This education is your responsibil- ity. You must set a goal and strive to a- chieve that goal. Flandreau High School offers you the challenge to prepare your- self for a rewarding future — it is up to you to accept that challenge. As the 1965 sports editor writes this last bit of copy, he is reminded of all the experiences, good and bad, winning or losing, that he hos hod a hand in. In the future we as seniors hope the underclassmen rise to each occasion as we have tried to do and we know they will feel a little more proud of themselves and their fellow teammates. 19 SENIOR Clarissa (left) turns away from the utter ignorance of Ernestine as she describes a murder mystery. He is trying to explain about the SI 7.83 toSleepy, his cohort. All's well ogain between Henry and his girl, Gladys. But this is before Henry remembers his deal with Mr. Bumpus. Janice Ludgate won the title of best sup- porting actress in the district contest for her performance as Martha Horst. Jim Neal gets a Whap on his al- ready sore head from Larry LaLonde. One of the many problems Jim Neal had during the play was a bucket. Advisor of the play was Mr. Hilsendeger, and stu- dent director was LeeAnn Tjarks. 22 Future Farmers Have Varied Activities FFA officers for the 64-65 year were: Standing: Warren Johnson, reporter; Gary Luttman, parlia- mentarian; Leonard Heineman, sentinel; Jim Eng, chaplain. Seated: Gordon Leraas, vice-president; Curt Eng, president; Larry LaLonde, secretary; Ken- neth Johnson, treasurer. These four pretty products of the farm compete for FFA Sweetheart. They are, left to right: Charlene Bonrud, Darnelle Ronning, Susan Ellingson (Sweetheart) and Doris GuHickson. Knowing crops is not the only skill FFA tries to develop. Dennis Erickson (left) won the local talent contest while Gordon Leraas (below) took top honors in the Ag. speech contest. 23 Future Farmers Berwyn Peterson, Warren Scofield, and Wayne Sco- field were on the livestock team which ranked 21st out of 69 teams competing. Curt Eng and Ken Johnson received honorable men- tion in farm machanics. Larry LcrLonde, Larry Paulsen, and Ken Johnson made up the meats team in which LaLonde received a sup- erior rating. The dairy judging team of Dan Hexum, Butch Steen- hoven, and Leonard Heinemann. 24 The poultry team, Gary Reinhart, Don Erickson, and Warren Johnson received a superior rating and was fourth in the state. Win Awards Alan Weise, Wayne Headrick, and Roger Lee were crop judging contestants. Wayne received a superior rating for his efforts. Paul Erickson, Bob Johnson and Leonard Heinemann received an excellent rating and placed 8th in the state. The FFA is one the largest organizations in the school system. Vocational Agriculture not only provides classes for farmers-to-be but also develops skills nec- essary for every occupation connected with agricul- ture. It may seem to the reader everyone enrolled in VO-Ag receives an award. This is far from the truth. The large number of FFA members throughout the state and nation furnish much competition and the boys on the preceding pages are true champions. 25 STUDENTS STAY ACTIVE Shown above are the lonely 16 members of the Science Club. The 160 members were selected from more than 1300 stu- dents who auditioned throughout the state of South . Dakota. Thirteen students from our school partic- ipated in the band. This was the highest number of students from any of the 62 schools that were represented. Composer and arranger, Dr. Paul Yoder, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was guest con- ductor. Dr. Yoder is immediate past president of the American Bandmaster's Association. With much instruction and an endless amount of patience, Mr. Ron Whalen, our director, guided these thir- teen musicians to their honors and the rest of the band to an important place in the school. Dancing A Favorite Activity Doug McDowell seems to be singing ecstatically over the joy of being chosen as Baccaneer of the Honor Society dance. Cathy Campbell is also quite pleased at becoming the Queen at the dance. Man, ain't this a passionate dance! If you look closely you just might see a boy........ This is the swing ingest band this side of the Muddy- Missouri. I'm sure glad the camera stopped this action, aren't you? JUNIOR -SENIOR BANQUET Guest speaker at the banquet was Father Russell, shown here with his wife. Lovely Helen Allen had her picture taken as she waits patiently for her food. Not so patiently, Gordon Leraas munches celery to stave off starvation. John Fenner seems to be contemplating again, or is he licking his knife? Junior class president Neil Teer proposes a toast while master of ceremonies Mel Duncan looks on. Mr. Hass frowns at the fly in his soup, while Jim Rewalt wonders what is in the coffee and Mr. Hil- sendeger just shovels it in. Cross-eyed Brvice Chamley opens wide, while John Weise seems to be lamenting the fact that his plate is bare. JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM I wonder what in the world Stan Lutter is doing all that sly smiling about? Any ideas, Jane? Leonard Heineman was the only one brave enough to show his face in this picture. Realistic scenery was used to good advantage at the Prom. Evidently the Shattoes can't spell chateau but they can provide good music for a Prom. A few of the many pleased couples at the Prom.
