Part of the duties of the Juniors is to sponsor a Junior-Senior banquet and prom for the benefit of the Seniors. The theme, ORIENTAL GARDENS, was brought out very effectively in the beautiful deco- rations used. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves while dancing to the music of STEVE ELLIS and his STARFIRES. Carwashes, bake sales, magazine sales, and con- cession stands all helped to make this a great success. Homecoming week was an active one for every- body. The festivities got off to a roaring start on Wednesday night with the hilarious Little Orpheum. Everyone was entertained by the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior skits. Short skits were presented by the Pep Club in between acts. This evening came to a grand climax with the crowning of Helen Petersen and Roger Peper as Homecoming King and Queen. Their attendants were Lavonne Stein, Betty Headrick, Susan Chamberlain, Judy Hanson, Gary Nass, Roger Headrick, Jon Scofield, and Larry McAtee. Thursday night everyone gathered at the foot- ball field for the big bonfire. School spirit was encouraged by a cheer session led by the cheer- leaders. Friday night! Great VICTORY! The Flandreau Fliers defeated the Britton Braves for the first Homecoming victory in six years. This made everyone's spirit buoyant for the grand finale of Homecoming week, the dance. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the music of Pat Baughman and his band. The Freshmen presented a humorous take off on current news. The Sophomores presented a Jackie Gleason Show for their skit. They also stopped for a few com- mercials. 30 HOMECOMING The Juniors presented a revision of Little Red Mighty Mouse (Stan) is supposed to be saving Little Red Riding Hood as their class skit. Hooding Ride (Denny) in the Junior Skit. The Seniors humorously portray the story of Sleeping Beauty. Everyone enjoyed the dance after the football game. The pep talk given to the boys by the coaches helped encourage them to a glorious victory. 31 BAND SWINGS THROUGH The Flandreau High School band has brought many honors to the school during the past year. Flandreau was second highest in the number of people attending All-State Band. Four of the thirteen played first chair in their sections. At the music contest this year the band received FHS' faithful band director, Mr. Ron Walen. A SUCCESSFUL YEAR seventeen firsts, this included soloists and ensembles. Besides working hard on their three annual concerts the band students have been raising money for the band trip they hope to take this summer to the Red River Valley Exhibition in Winnipeg, Canada. The now famous Flandreau Flier drum is being beaten by Arthur Jewett. He is doing his pounding during a parade that the band attended in Sioux Falls to honor the Vikings of Augustana on the annual Vikings Day. The Flandreau Chapter of Future Home- makers of America started out with a boom at a State meeting at Huron. During the year the Homemakers had a bake sale, a style show and attended a regional meeting at Madison. The girls have practiced a future career which most girls look forward to which is homemaking, of course. STUDENT LIBRARIANS WORK HARD TO KEEP THE LIBRARY IN “TOP NOTCH” CONDITION Susie, Nila, and Karen find their needed information. Kathy and Laurie keep a watchful eye on library students. Hey! I found it. Says Deloris as she finds the long lost book she and Audrae were looking for. Terry stands by watching. 48 F.F.A. HAS SUCCESSFUL YEAR The officers for the 1963-1964 year of the FFA included: Back Row: Larry LaLonde, Chaplain; Curt Eng, Sentinel, and John Wiese, Reporter. The Front Row includes: Dennis Smith, Treasurer; Roger Herrick, Vice-President; Roger Peper, President, Gary Nass, Secretary, and Larry Paulsen, Parliamentarian. Helen Petersen was chosen as Chapter Sweetheart for this year. Shown are some of the members of the FFA receiving special recognition at Awards Night. Receiving awards are: Roger Peper, Duwayne Headrick, Dennis Smith, Shannon Christen- sen, and Boyd Scofield, Mr. Acheson is shown giving awards out. 49 The livestock team was made up of Leonard Heimamon, David Halter and Roger Peper. 50 On the Poultry team were James Eng Paul Erickson, and Gerald Berger. Larry LaLonde, Kenneth Johnson, and Gary Luttman were on the dairy team for this year. On farm mechanics were John Wiese and Vernon Schult. The state farmers chosen for this year from Fland- reau were Duwayne Headrick, Roger Peper, and Shannon Christensen. Larry Paulsen, Boyd Scofield, and Ronald Hexum were on the dairy cattle team. The meats team included Roger Herrick, Dennis Smith, and Roger Peper. 51 “B” CHEERLEADERS The B team cheerleaders for the Flandreau B squad from left to right are Jolene Headrick, Susan Thorson, Julie Landis and Kathy Otto. The girls are chosen from the Freshman and Sophomore classes. Pep Club and Officers fulfill a successful year at FHS. Officers from left to right Betty Headrick, Pres.; Sheila Roark, Sec'y.; Nyla Kucera, Treas.; Julie Landis, Vice-Pres. 52 PEP CLUB OFFICERS “A” TEAM CHEERLEADERS The Varsity Cheerleaders: Susie Chamberlin, Helen Peterson, Janice Ludgate, Lucille Maxwell and Susie Ellingson; led the Fliers to their first homecoming victory in seven years winning over Britton 7 to 0. They also led the Fliers to a consolation victory in the District 17 Tournament in Madison. FHS is proud of their varsity Cheerleaders. Keep up the good work, girls. 53 FLIERS WIN HOMECOMING These boys from the '63 Flier team take a break from practicing to pose for this picture. Rog, starting left half, and Jim, quarterback, added a little flavor and fun in the huddles. I wonder why the smiles? They must have seen Betty and Lucille. 54 Larry McAtee Left End Roger Peper Left Half Rog Headrick ' ' - ( jj Ri9ht SENIORS Pat Vanderhoof —' Fullback A ’ L Ron Leraas %s Fullback Dave Thoreson Right End I .1 TP .’9 Only one of our boys was recognized for his efforts on the football field this year by the Sportswriter's Association. This was Gordon Leraas, who made honorable mention on the All-State Football team. Gordon, who is only a junior, will be back next year to give his services to the Flier football squad. 55 Our football team made a good showing of itself, even though its 3-5-1 record can't be called fabulous. We were a young team, with only four seniors in the starting line-up. This caused us to rely on underclassmen, who really came through in the clutch. There are many reasons why Coach Rhead can be proud of his team. This year marked the first Home- coming victory in six years as we knocked off top-ranked Britton. We also continued our winning streak against the Indians, stretching it to 13 years. To win a game, the opposing team had to pay dearly in the form of bruises and sore heads. As our team will be weakened only in a few places by the loss of this year's seniors, we can expect a lot from next year's team, and can feel quite confident we will get it. Our coaching staff was comprised of these three coaches. Mr. Corlett, Mr. Acheson, and head coach Mr. Rhead are pictured in one of their less frequent periods when they could rest. Mr. Acheson and Mr. Rhead both starred for their respective colleges. Although Mr. Corlett was just a basketball ace , he knows something about football, so he says. FRESHMAN SQUAD I Pictured above is this year's Freshman squad. These boys gained valuable experience by working out with the varsity this fall. There is some good talent in this bunch, as they all played varsity ball. Ken Klitzke showed himself to be a hard-nosed player as he earned himself the starting center linebacker spot on the varsity team. FIRST ROW: Reg Bauske, Warren Scofield, Bill Davidson, Jim Landis and Wayne Scofield. SECOND ROW: Bill Ellingson, Wayne Headrick, Tom Schmidt, Ken Klitzke, Bob Houser, and Don Waxdahl. 56 FLIERS FINISH FIFTH IN NORTHEAST CONFERENCE Our basketball team didn't really show its stuff till the district tournaments. They compiled a 6- 14 record during the regular season play, which was still good enough to give them fifth place in the Northeast Conference, as most of the games we won were in conference play. During the dis- trict tournaments, they lost a two overtime squeaker to Dell Rapids to take them out of the running for the district championship. They still came back strong in defeating Colman and Egan to take consolation award. As in football, our team was a young team. There will be a lot of good talent back next year to take up where they left off. If this ain't the living end. Look ma, no hands. Coach Corlett is shown discussing floor plans with his co-captains Rog Peper and Larry McAtee. I wonder if we should ask him if it helped? Our 23 game schedule is listed below: Beresford 25 lost 57 Parkston 48 lost 58 Redfield 52 won 39 conference Webster 45 lost 72 conference M ilbank 67 won 50 conference Clear Lake 52 lost 56 conference Clark 45 lost 50 conference Brookings 49 lost 73 Lennox 59 won 44 Redfield 56 won 53 conference Sisseton 45 lost 58 conference Britton 44 lost 73 conference Indians 49 lost 53 Webster 63 won 62 conference M ilbank 44 lost 78 conference Clark 46 lost 67 conference Madison 60 lost 62 Sisseton 44 lost 67 conference Clear Lake 64 won 51 conference Britton 39 lost 60 conference District Games Dell Rapids 80 lost 83 (2 o.t.) FRONT ROW: Jim Neal, DuWayne Headrick, Rog Headrick, Larry Paulson, Bob Murphy, Larry McAtee, and Dave Thoreson. SECOND ROW: Manager Bill Schuyler, Rog Peper, Jim Ellefson, Denny Erickson, Don Foreman, Jim Rewalt, Doug McDowall, and Manager Ron Leraas. Pictured below are a few of the highlights of the 1963-1964 campaign. 58 “B” TEAM SPORTS PERFECT RECORD This is the B Squad that carried through a perfect record this year. They didn't win a game. They did their job well, though. They provided entertainment before the varsity game. Again we see those two managers. Don't they ever stay home? FIRST ROW: Jim Burns, Dave Halter, Bryon Bennett, Duane Gunderson, Mel Duncan, Bob Houser, Neil Teer, Tom Duncan, and Jim Landis. SECOND ROW: Manager Bill Schuyler, Terry Siems, Pat Driscoll, Tom Schmidt, Gordon Haugen, Wayne Headrick, Leonard Heinemann, Bill Ellingson, and Manager Ron Leraas. J Mr. Rliead, the smiling coach pictured above, was the proud coach of that infamous team that went through the season win less. Better luck next year, coach. VARSITY-FACULTY GAME Is this a basketball team? Hey ref!. He moved the basket. 59 GRAPPLERS BEGIN Although Flandreau's first year in wrestling didn't sport too prominent a record, a lot of experience was gained and many boys will be back next year to improve their performances. The boys are from left to right: BACK ROW: Larry LaLonde, Myron Taylor, Stan Gruneich, Reg Bauske. SECOND ROW: Gordon Leraas, Jay Weigel, Dale Johnson, Shannon Christensen, Russ Walberg, Steve Solem, Steve Sampson. FRONT ROW: Jay Dailey, Dave Knauss, Jim Kreber, Rick Walberg, and Lin Dailey CO-CAPTAINS IN ACTION Shannon Christensen, a senior, was the only Flandreau representative to enter the state meet although many boys reached the regional matches. Co-captain Jay Weigel shows form which earned him top scoring honors this year. Co-captain Jay Dailey puts forth a little extra effort to win this match. 60 TRACK Although the 63-64 track team lacked experience, some outstanding performances by a few individuals helped to make a successful season. The team consisted of: BACK ROW: Ron Lee, Mel Duncan, Jay Weigel, Reg Bauske, Greg Urban, and Wayne Headrick. MIDDLE ROW: Coach George Smith, Don Ericksen, Neil Teer, Gordon Leraas, Jim Rewalt, Roger Peper, Ron Leraas, and Dave Schmid. FRONT ROW: Bill Davidson, Bob Houser, Ken Klitzke, Pat Driscoll, Gene Hagedorn, Steve Solem, and Stan Gruneich. Not pictured is Paul Ericksen. Co-captain Ron Leraas, a hardworking senior with a lot of determination would have been an asset to any track team. 61 Co-captain Roger Peper shows fine hurdle form which puts him ahead of all competitors. Jay Weigel, a junior, turned in the best perfor- mances this year in the discus and shot-put. Neil Teer, sophomore speedster, makes a habit of breaking the string in the hundred yard dash. PHYSICAL EDUCATION 62 SENIORS RECEIVE A WARDS Mr. Hass congratulates Linda on her salutatorian honors. Roger poses for a picture after he is awarded the American Legion Award. On our Annual Awards Night top seniors were given special awards. Ron Leraas and Linda Robertson won the highest honors given to seniors of F. H. S., vale- dictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Ron also re- ceived the Masonic Award and Linda the P.E.O. Award. The American Legion Awards were recieved by Kathy Solem and Roger Peper. Kathy was also awarded the O.E. S. Award and D.A.R. candidate. Nine Honor Students were given special mention. Ron is receiving his valedictorian honors from Mr. Hass. Kathy listens as Mrs. L. Schliinz reads the inscription on the 0. E. S. plaque. 63 JUNIORS PRESENT Annual photographer Jim Neal seems to have learned how to make good use of the chop- sticks. (left) Janice and Lu- cille take a break to crack a joke, (right) Shown above are members of the junior class as they decorated for the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme, Oriental Gardens, was presented by the juniors and the class hired Steve Ellis and the Starfires to play for the occasion. It was a great success. At left Mr. H. K. Melemseter, Direc- tor of Administration Missions at Aug- ustana College, addresses the stu- dents at the Junior- Senior Banquet, held just before the Prom dance. Photog Jim takes Charlene by sur- prise whi le she decorates the bridge. Juniors and seniors are shown below as they waited for the main course to come their way. Oven-baked steak, potatoes, biscuits, and jello were among the main items on the menu. The reading of the will and class prophecy of the Senior class was held when the meal was over. 64 “ORIENTAL GARDENS” At right Mrs. Leisinger shows us how to twist. Below Susan Thorson and Charlene Jacobson are on hand to serve punch and crackers. Above are shown some of the students, teachers, and alumni as they took a breather between the dances. With Steve Ellis and the Starfires making the music the dance was very lively. The picturesque bridge set in an Oriental fashion with tree and stones, added a more out- of-doors mood to the dance. It also provided a place to have a picture taken of you and your date. One of the slower dances show a few of the students in a happy mood. We hope everyone had a fine time. BACCALAUREATE Reverend Stemme was the speaker at the Senior Vespers Sunday evening. Senior Vespers was held Sunday evening May 24 with Reverend Stemme giving the sermon. Reverend Gruneich led the invocation and benediction. The double octet of the high school chorus provided entertainment. 66 COMMENCEMENT Dr. Vandel Johnson of the University of South Dakota gave as the topic of his speech Know- ledge Is Not Sufficient. Dr. Johnson was formerly a teacher at Flandreau before moving to Vermillion. Janet Hammer receives her diploma from the president of the school board, Justin Jones. Dr. Vandel Johnson was the guest speaker at commencement. 67 SPONSORS Billiams West Side Russell A. Schultz Fanners Union Co-op Oil Co.
