The fond memories of these students will remain in the minds of all the students and faculty of Flandreau High School. Sandy, a sophomore at Flandreau High School, was active in band and chorus. She was also a member of the Methodist Church. Sandra Newcomer Dick was a member of the Junior Class of Flandreau High School. He was also a member of the Flandreau Future Farmers of America Chapter. 2 Richard Hagedorn Vigness and Hass Pilot F. H. S. Superintendent Sylvan Vigness enters the high school for another of his days at FHS. In his first year as superintendent, Mr. Vigness instigated many reforms. He is also responsible for all of the business activities of the school. Superintendent Vigness is assisted by his competent secretary Gladys English. Principal William Hass with the assistance of his secretary, Peggy Phelan, had the responsibility of making the FHS year run smoothly. Their duties included the handing out of report cards, the keeping of the students records, and the supervision of student activities. 3 Teachers At F H S Mr. Ronald Whalen Bachelor of Fine Arts Master of Music South Dakota State University Band Mrs. Jean Macksam Bachelor of Science South Dakota State College Typing Shorthand Mr. Gerald Kippes Bachelor of Science South Dakota State College Physics Economics Mechanical Drawing Mr. Alex Hilsendeger Bachelor of Science Northern State Teachers College History Speech Mr. William Rhykus Bachelor of Science South Dakota State College History Physcology Guidance Counselor 4 Mr. Donald Rasmussen Bachelor of Science Northern State Teachers College Biology Algebra Mr. Darrel Corlett Bachelor of Science South Dakota State College General Science Government Mrs. Irene Engstrom Bachelor of Science South Dakota State Colleg Home Economics Mrs. Irene Riffel Bachelor of Science Winona State Teachers College English Speech Library Mrs. Gudrun Leverson Bachelor of Science Augustana College English 5 Mr. Thomas Bruce Bachelor of Science Southern State Teachers College English Mr. Charles Prochaska Bachelor of Science Master of Science Northern State Teachers College Mathematics Mrs. Solvig Aarness Bachelor of Arts Augustana College Vocal History Mr. David Acheson Bachelor of Science South Dakota State College Vocational Agriculture Miss Wilma Eberhard Bachelor of Arts Huron College Spanish and English Mr. A1 Weisbecker Bachelor of Science Northern State Teachers College Bookkepping and Phy. The first year for the Freshman class was a trying one. When they first came to FHS, there was the usual confusion of opening lockers and finding the right room at the right time. One project of the Freshmen class was the Little Orpheum. The Freshmen are looking forward to their next 3 years at F. H. S. Tom Thorson shows the cheer- leaders how it should be done as he leads the senior skit in a cheer for victory. David Thoreson and Susie Cham- berlain made the junior skit an uproar with their wild antics. Homecoming Festivities Little Orpheum marked the beginning of homecoming on Wednesday evening with each class presenting a skit. Between skits the audience was entertained by the Pep Club. The stars of homecoming, Tom Henry and Mar- shann Heinemann, were crowned following the Little Orpheum. The queen's attendants were: Betsy Bonde. Vera Beach, Pat Snuggerud, and Janet Weigel. The king's attendents were: Lynn Johnson, Tom Thorson, Dan Gulllckson, and Doug Petersen. The royalty was crowned by last year's homecoming king and queen and were robed by Nyla Harrington and Jean Hass. Thursday evening Tom and Marshann starred at the bonfire where they helped the cheerleaders and band give the student body school spirit. The highlight of homecoming came on Friday night at the football game when the Fliers battled Madison to a tie. After the game the student body enjoyed themselves dancing to the music of Jimmy Darrell and his orchestra. Music with a bounce , by Jimmy Darrell and orchestra. Doug hauls down a Bulldog after little or no gain. Wild hats and music by the brass helped make the bonfire a success. Twisting the night away or so it seems as these students enjoy the dance. Torches held high for victory at the bonfire. 13 The students weren't the only ones to enjoy the dance as evidenced by Mr. Hilsendeger. 4 Band To keep this band on key is their director Mr. Ron Whalen. Under his direction the band is active throughout the year as both a concert band and as a marching band. During the winter season three concerts are given by the band, two formal and one Pops Con- cert. In the summer, besides giving a weekly concert these minstrals do fine precision marching. Touring the Black Hills, participating in the Days of '76 Celebration, and preforming in several parades and marching contests, winning the trophy at the Tri-State Marching Festival made up the season's itinerary. Harmonious notes are heard from the band not only at the three concerts given during the year but also at sports events, where the band lends its support to the team. At this particular game student director Tom Thorson took over for a short time while Mr. Whalen refereed. 16 To Success Care for dancing? The F. H. S. Dance Band can provide the music from a waltz to a cha-cha or twist. Besides playing for numerous public functions during the year the dance band is featured at the band sponsored fund-raiser dance each spring. Any other spare moments during the year are spent preparing solos and en- sembles for the District Music Contest held at Madison, where the band always gives a good showing. Another important event every year to the band is All-State Band. Oie hundred and sixty outstanding musicians are selected from the entire state by tryout to play in this band each year. This year Jean Hass. Janice Ludgate. Mary Ann De Lay, Vera Beach, Betsy Bonde, John Fenner, Pat Vanderhoof and Lloyd Schlp- per were rewarded for their hours of practice with spending three days at Huron participating in this fine organization. 17 Four sharp musicians received superior for their solos at the music contest. These industrious students worked together to get this yearbook to you. Aside from all goofing around and glue- fighting, these annual staff members worked real hard in the making of the 1962-1963 Flyer. Paper Staff The paper staff this year was made up of twelve industrious jou rnal ists . Under the constant urging of their editor, Gene Henry, they managed to get the High Flier to us each Thursday. Under the guidance of Mr. Corlett and Mr. Kippes the class was divided into two parties, the Nationalists headed by Jean Hass and Gene Henry and the Federalists headed by Carol Foreman, Tom Henry and Keith Kroeger. A week of hard campaigning was climaxed by elections and visiting the county offices. Incidently, the Nationalists had a sweeping victory over the Federalists, winning fifteen of the eighteen offices. The Nats campaigning included not only singing a chorus of their party song but also giving away candy kisses . k f A 0 Gary fhrker and C. M. Culhane pause in their discussion for a picture. Senior High Chorus Tunes Up for Perfect Harmony Blending their voices during a number at their annual spring concert, the Senior High Chorus under the direction of Mrs. Solvig Aarness harmonizes beautifully. During the year this chorus group and its ensembles have participated in many school and public programs: the District Music Contest, All State Chorus, and were also featured on the high school radio program. Flandreau High Highlights. The twelve chorus students who attended All State Chorus came home to report that not only was singing in such an excellent group an exuberating experience but that they had a real swinging, singing time, also. They were Dennis Erickson, baritone, Dennis Smith, bass, and John Hobson, tenor. Mrs. Aarness, just a little proud of both her Junior and Senior High chorus groups, gives them a cheery smile to remember her by. Music, her specialty from grade school operettas to formal high school concerts, takes all of her time. There always seems to be a little extra though for Little Orpheum, her history class, and a pleasant smile for her students. Our bet is that he enjoyed himself. Success came to this group not only from the pleasure their singing gave to others, but from the satisfaction and enjoyment they received from singing under Mrs. Aarness: director. Back Row: Glenda Christenson, Rosemary Hanson, Betty Hurley, Jolene Headrick, Eloise Allen, Marie Allen. Seniors Stage Box Office Smash The Man Who Came to Dinner proved to be a successful and very memorable last project for the seniors. When Keith Kroeger, in his role as Whiteside, a well known lecturer, paid an unexpected, and rather unfortunate, visit to the Stanley's things really started popping. Convicts, penquins, and cockroaches only added to the general confusion. Bedlam reigned when Whitesides decided to break up a budding romance between his secretary and a local reporter. All ended happily, however, for everyone except Whitesides, who had another accident and was again confined to his wheelchair. These industrious seniors helped make production possible by assembling flats and setting the stage for the play. Even though this work isn't acting Mrs. Riffel, play director, keeps a watchful eye on her cast. Below, Metz, played by Doug Petersen, gives Vera Beach a welcome kiss upon arriving to visit his friend Whiteside. Metz presents his friend with a colony of cockroaches, much to Whiteside's delight. Sheridan Whiteside makes life miserable for the Stanleys with his orders as he enters the room above. Left. Gary Jewett and Shirley Qoud listen as Keith Kroeger reveals a planto sneak them away from the Stanleys . Above, Carol Foreman and Joan Berger listen intently as Betsy Bonde reads an article from Time. Above left, Beverly Small- field presents a Christmas gift to Keith. The Man Who Came to Dinner Whiteside presents his favorite tie to the Stanley’s children played by Dan Gullickson and Donna Kuhle. No play would be complete unless the cast's names were listed on a flat, just as no play could be a success without a director. Here Gene Henry presents Mrs. Riffel with a token of the senior's appreciation. Getting rid of Lorraine proved to be quite a problem until she stepped into the mummy case Whiteside s stay was prolonged when he fell for the second time on the Stanley's doorstep. Maggie’s perfect plot to get Lorraine Sheldon (Janet Weigel) out of town was foiled later by Whitesides. Tom Thorson has a fondness for pianos while Gary Parker seems to have a fondness for Nyla Harrington. The feeling doesn't appear to be mutual, however. ONE-ACT PLAYS STIMULATE INTEREST IN DRAMA The winner: The Man in the Bowler Hat The Dear Departed Gene Henry Bill Houser Jim Jewett Susie Ellingson Adele Dibben Charlene 3onrud Director: Jean Polscher V ' Z6 Uider the direction of Mrs. Riff el and her three student dir- ectors, acting became not only work but fun for these sixteen stage bugs. Memorizing and rehearsing over and over again, often in the shower rooms seemed only natural to these actors and actresses and they took it all in a stride. When performance night arrived, The Man in the 3owler Hat came out on top and went to Arlington to compete in the District Contest where it received an excellent rating. Tom Henry Vera Beach Gary Parker The Boor Magic moments for both the seniors and juniors began with the festive banquet at the Ma- sonic Temple and continued throughout the night at the prom hosted in the Park Pavilion. Magic Moments Dr. Wayne Puttmann treated everyone with an inspir- ing after-dinner speech keyed to the graduation class entitled High Adventure”, and enter- tainment was provided by the chorus and the reading of the senior class will and prophecy. A little rain didn't dampen the gala spirits of the 'prom- sters' and the prom was a success beginning with the grand march and climaxing with the crowning of the prom prince and princess. Crowned at the stroke of mid- night by Judy Hanson, the honored pair was brother and sister, Doug and Helen Peter- son. They were chosen by ballot on the lovely scenic patio attended by LeAnn Meeker and Dorothy Smallfield. Each was given a travel alarm to remember the event. Everyone danced the magic moments away to the heavenly organ music of Jimmy Darrell and the Magic Moments too rapidly changed into Moments to Remember. I Could Have Danced All Night is how every- one felt, but they did taken an occasional punch break, we see, at the punch-well to get refreshed. Dan Gullickson, Vera Beach, Jean Hass and Bill Gullickson put the rose decored punch-well to another use. The juniors put a lot of work into decorating for the prom. This lovely scene not only greeted the guests as they arrived but also made a lovely background for this picture of Dan Gullickson and Vera Beach. Balloons everywhere! Someone got rid of a lot of hot air while the juniors decorated for the big event. Class Officers Pave Way as Sophomores Maneuver Through Second Year Through their second year of high school, the Sophomores began to assume responsibilities. As a class they entertained at the Little Orpheum with the Gary Moore Show , which was a big success. They decorated the stage with flowers for the Senior Vesper Service and Commencement. Peppy Pepsters Back Jose The Pep Club, consisting of school-spirit minded girls of F. H. S. backs Jose, the image of our school spirit, and our athletic teams in every way possible. Headed by a fine set of officers, president, Betsy Bonde, vice- president Charlene Bonrud, sec- retary-treasurer, Susie Chamber- lain, and representatives. Nyla Harrington, Karen Christenson, Doris Gullickson and Kathy Hass, the Pep Club made posters, attended athletic events, gave skits, sold 'Flier' buttons, and sponsored a Sadie Hawkins Dance. Gary Jewett relinquished his title as Mr. Irrestible to newly chosen Larry McAtee at the Pep Club sponsored Sadie Hawkins Dance. At left Larry seems to be having a difficult time balancing his crown and is helped by his date Shirley Sorence. . While the younger set dance the chaperones join in a game of bridge to pass the time. On the dance floor the peppy pepsters turn into peppermint twisters. The girls fed the boys well, as is seen to by Cathy Campbell and LeAnn Meeker, who cut the generous pieces of cake for the occasion. 36 Forensic Leaguers Take the Podium The newly organized Forensic League, started this year by speech instructor, Mr. Alex Hilsendeger proved to be a successful enter- prise. Over ninety enthusiastic orators joined to refresh their memories and to put to use what they had learned in speech class. This year's group gained valuable experience in parlimentary pro- cedure and in drawing up a club constitution. Flans for next year include a study of dramatics and more public speaking. Led by League officers, Lois Gullickson, president, Don Fore- man vice president, Susan Thor son, treasurer, Adele Dibben, sec- retary, Pat Snuggerud, corres- ponding secretary and Judy Hanson, parlimentarian, the Forensic League held a swinging spring sock hop. Music by Gordon Bird, prizes for the best decorated socks, a limbo contest and plenty of refreshments made the evening a skyrocketing success. Gene and Carol, although both 'A' students and National Merit Scholars, don't believe in all work and no play. Both were active throughout their four years of high school in school and class activities and look back on four years filled with frolicing fun and lasting friendships. Carol Entertainment for Commence- ment was provided by the mixed chorus ensemble. Betsy seems to be getting a little anxious about when they're going to present the diplomas. Head Graduating Class Speaker for the Senior Vesper Service was Rev. Lyle Ingle- bret, who gave a thought pro- voking talk on self evaluation. Diplomas were presented to the fifty two graduating seniors by President of the School Board, Justin Jones.
