FLANDREAU HIGH SCHOOL FLANDREAU, SOUTH DAKOTA DEDICA TION This year the members of the Annual Staff chose to dedicate their book to Judqe Georae A. Rice. One of Flan- dreau's outstanding civic leaders. Judqe Rice spent a total of 25 years servinq the community as a member of the Board of Education. For this activity alone he will long be remem- bered and admired. The selection of an individual or individuals for dedi- cation purposes is annually a difficult task, but we feel that this year our selection was a wise, as well as a deserving one. We. the students of Flandreau High School, wish to ex- press our deepest thanks for a wonder- ful service. George A. Rice J. R. Orvedahl IN MEMORIAM The students of F.H.S. suffered a loss in the death of a man who for many years sought to improve their edu- cational opportunities and their chances for success in life. Our sympathies are extended in memory of Mr. J. R. Orvedahl, who served as a member of the Board of Education of this school district for close to 14 years. Mr. Orvedahl was also active in social, civic, and church affairs of the community, but he shall best be remem- bered by the young men and women of this community for his contribution to the school he served. 2 1) S-D Day assembly. 2) The library just oot a new bunch of mags. 3) Government class is a rather frigid state. 4) Mrs. Engstrom looks displeased. 5) Mooch must have flunked I ! All kidding aside, we are very proud to present the gradua- tion class of Flandreau High School for the year 1955. Four short years ago these people came on the scene as fright- ened. timid freshmen. Now they are about ready to emerge as polished young ladies and gentlemen. The metamorphosis has been com- pleted and we are sure the class of '55 will, in the future, bring much honor and glory to this school. Seniors, our hats are off to you. The council sponsors parties, carries out school projects, and discusses the questions of the students and the faculty. With Mr. Hass advising the group and Merle Myers pre- siding, they usually manage to get a couple projects com- pleted each year. This year the 7th and 8th grades elected representatives to the Student Council also. Student body President Merle Myers talks it over with Mr. Hass. 16 Doris Heesch, Vice-President; Lois Ingemann. This year's band upheld this reputa- tion to the highest possible de- gree. Some of the highlights of the year's activities were par- ticipation in the Luverne Tri- State Band Festival, Dakota Day. and the Augustana College Band Day. as well as acting as the of- ficial band at the sectional tournament in Brookings. The band does not neglect the homefolks. however, as it pre- sents three concerts yearly in addition to its regular role in the Homecoming Parade, 4-H Achievement Parade, Memorial Day Parade and Kiddies Day Parade. Spectators at all the Fliers athletic events are the recipients of much enjoyable music and marching, as the band never fails to come up with something new for these occasions. Under the able direction of Mr. Samp the band expects to con- tinue successfully in whatever their venture. Eldon Samp. Director Oboe: Margaret Daw- son. Cornets: Linda Beane, Gordon Duncan. The wonderful voices you hear every morning are the best that good old F.H.S. has to offer. There is a boys' glee club, a girls' club and a mixed chorus. They sing at different events such as the church banquets, P.T.A., and study clubs. The students go to Madison for the high school music contest in the spring. The senior high school and junior high school give their annual concert in the spring. This consists of girls' glee club, boys' glee club, mixed chorus, junior high glee club and chorus and all the students combined in one big chorus. Mrs. Re- wait, director, has worked very hard to organize this very fine group of songsters. Back Row: Jean Duncan, Leanne Johnson, Verda Ehlers, Lois Ingemann, Jeanne Bisson, Janice Erickson. HOMECOMING ROYALTY QUEEN SHIRLEY KING QUENTIN Our homecoming was started out by a wonderful Little Orpheum in which the fresh- men had two plays. The soph- omores contributed a pan- tomime. and the seniors fol- lowed with TOBACCO ROAD WITH DETOURS. The show was closed by the crowning of royalty. Queen Shirley Anne Jones and King Quentin Lee. Thursday night we had our bonfire and then enjoyed a free movie, thanks to Raliegh Matson. A drizzle dampened many a spirit on Friday, but by parade time all was well. It succeeded in being one of the best with the seniors breaking the juniors' tradition- al winning streak by taking first on their float. The soph- omores came in second and the FFA and eighth grade tied for third. We topped off home- coming by beating the Canton C Hawks in an exciting 13-12 victory. A dance after our football game wound up the homecoming festivities. Top: Senior 1st Place T°P: Junior Bottom: Sophomores 2nd Place Bottom: Ag 3rd Place '54 PARADE Top Row: Annual Siaif. These people provide the assistance needed to keep a library running smoothly. This group of girls organized and formed a club called the Book- finders and tried hard to keep the library in order, prepare new books and repair the old ones. Officers elected by the girls are changed each semester. Along with Miss Rudd, the girls worked to provide proper facilities in our library for the student body. We believe they succeeded in accomplishing their purpose. FUTURE NURSES Back Row: Rosella Wiese, Lois Ingemann. Roberta Wiese. Lovey Wood, Barbara Nass. Jean Potte- baum. The local sponsors are Mrs. John Wenbloom. Mrs. Stanley Ham- mer, and Mrs. Skroch. The Future Nurses Club of Flandreau meets once a month, having a schedule planned for the year. It consists of junior and senior girls who are thinking of nurs- ing as a career. The officers are: Jean Pottebaum. TWIRLERS o o Audrey Armstrong, Margaret Dawson, Nancy Hales I This trio of lovelies is responsible for guiding the fortunes of the FHS band when on parade. It is the job of these girls to keep this large group organized and function- ing smoothly in the absence of their director. In addition to handling the movements of the group, they still find time to smile sweetly and please the audience with a fine exhibition of baton twirling. School spirit is something which no school can afford to be without. Traditionally, it is the cheerleaders who are responsible for bringing out all the hidden enthusiasm in the student body. Flandreau High School c n be proud of its cheerleaders. These six girls, elected by the student body, have upheld this tradition to the fullest possible extent. These girls, under the supervision of Mr. Samp, deserve our congratulations (and sympathy) as we say Thanks, girls, for a job well done. CHEERLEADERS Back Row: Nancy Hales. On paper this year's prospects were not particularly good, but the fellows representing F.H.S. on the gridiron refused to believe this advance publicity. The season started with a loss by our traditional foe, Madison. 13-0. Successive defeats at the hands of Vermillion and Cathedral had people wondering if the Fliers ever would get rolling. With only one returning regular and only three experienced reserves, the outlook was none too brighi when the hardwood drills commenced. The boys demon- strated the same determination and will to win that brought success on the gridiron. Led by senior pivolman. Wes Heminger, the Fliers came out of the season with a 15 and 5 record. The Fliers lose Heminger and Gary Mc- Mahon via graduation, so prospects for next year, at this moment, are quite dim. Jim McAtee. Denny Brook, and Pete Allen of the regulars along with front-line reserve Gary Chamley, give coach Clyde Cotton a fine nucleus to start the '55-'56 season. The were the workers numbering 73 and boasting the largest class in FHS. Starting right off in the fall the juniors all pitched in and along with the FFA sold magazines for the Curtis Publishing Company. Throughout the football and basketball season they sold candy, pop, and popcorn at home games to gel funds for their big project, the junior-senior banquet and prom. This year the sophomores took a back seat to the seniors only by second prize in their float in the Homecoming Parade. Our only gripe this year was the lack of initiation due to the creating of Junior High. At least we can be proud that we were not confined to the lower bracket but allowed to take classes along with upperclassmen. The skit for Little Orpheum was Garther Od reys Talent Sprouts. This television program con- sisted of Liberace, The Ink Sprouts, and The McGuire Sisters. Also master of ceremonies was Kent Miller. The sophomores are proud of the 16 members they have in the A band and the 10 boys playing on the A and B squad football teams. This proves they are active in the sports and activities offered by the school. Top Row: Joyce Schlina. Gilbert Stembaugh. Howard Stimaon, Kenneth Stimson. Gerald Story, Norma Stien. Here we'll clue in the student body on the reason for r this. In previous years the set-up was six grades in grade school, two in junior high, and four in senior high. This year the set-up is six grades in grade school, three in junior high, and three in senior high. In this set-up the junior high has their own paper, Junior Jet, ' and speech work. They are included in most high school activities, have their own dances, and use the upstairs library. Top Row: Doria Patch, Walter Paulaon, Nina Peteraon, John Phelan. Tom Price, Richard Riffel.
