First of all 1 want to thank you for inviting me to join you for your 50 year reunion. Wow. has it been 50 years since I left Flandreau!!! Can't be possible!! 1 was hoping so much I could be there with you, but won't be able to due to another commitment. Maybe the next time you have a class reunion, I can return for it. I left Flandreau the summer of 1953 and we moved back to our home area of Clear Lake, Iowa. We’d only lived there a few months when my Mother passed away from 3 heart attacks. My Father died 3 'A years later of lung cancer, and then my youngest sister, Judy, died 2 Vt years after that from acute leukemia; so my family now consists of my self and my brother, Darrell Hansen. After graduation I found a job in Des Moines. Met my former husband there and lived in that area for many years. Don and I were married for 33 years and then divorced. I retired in 2001 after working in the corporate office of an automotive company for 22 years. I had purchased a mobile home prior to retirement in Bradenton. FL. and moved here in May, 2001. I found I didn’t like retirement so returned to work part-time as an accounting clerk for a private aircraft company at the Bradenton-Sarasota Airport and am still working and have no set time when I will quit. My health wasn't the best for many years, but is much better now that I live in a warm climate. I do lots of walking, dancing and exercising. I am Chairperson for the Dance Committee in the mobile home park where 1 live. I served on the Board of Directors here also. I keep in touch with JoAnn Anderson Nichols and when I still lived in Iowa I saw her frequently. Maybe another time when I am in the Flandreau area I can get in touch with some of you. I know all of you will have a great the good time I missed. Thanks ag this way, please give me a call or s Karon Hansen White 287 Apricot Street Bradenton. The picture was taken inside Flandreau’s new Elementary School. The same sequential order was used, as in the original Graduation Photo, taken outside of the Spafford School, 50 years ago. Compare photos by putting the colored photo inside the clear plastic cover of the Archival Book. To give the 50th Reunion Photo a more secure location, you may wish to trim edges and then paste it over “REMBERING...50th Year Reunion-2004” on page 161 ..or remove the taped list of e-mails and paste the colored photo inside the back. From 1-3 PM on Saturday July 3rd, Pat Kuhle Sutton graciously opened her home to begin our Reunion with food and fellowship. So many of us are now “homeless in our old hometown” and we were so thankful for a “welcome home location! One side of nametags had a photo of our old FHS, along with a copy of each person’s Graduation Photo, and the classmate’s name and location...to remind of “who you were”. The other side listed the Agenda for Saturday and Sunday...to remind each of “where you need to be.” Joanne Ambroson and Madonna Nelson Steensma distributed envelopes containing the name tags and also an explanation of expenses, for those who were able to contribute. We’re so thankful for the generosity of classmates, which covered our needs! They, along with Joyce Reid Newman, also served as Hostesses at their tables, during the banquet. A red silk rose (our senior- flower) was at each place-setting, with an attached laminiated senior-photo. r r c i t i i t k Those who chose to go on the 4PM Tour of Flandreau High (new in 1968) and the Elementary School (new in 2003) were joined by our former Commercial Teacher, Barbara ’ White. We all were impressed with the quality, when compared to our memories of [ Spafford and our old FHS. Following the Tour, classmates met inside of the Elementary p School, for our Group Photo, taken by Sheila McConnell. We appreciated Lee Olson’s |. son, Chuck, doing our video-filming on Saturday...and Sheila took over that filming Sunday. r lor c Ua Utenz- Oro tru = lcjyj ft— o 5? By 5:30PM we were gathered in the lower room of Mad Mary's Steak House...which is probably located in the former back yard of Tootsie Thoreson. After everyone had placed their supper order, Senior Class President, Jerry Faris, who served as M.C., introduced Sheila Bums, widow of classmate Jim. As Jerry read a name, Sheila lit a separate votive candle for each of 23, who had once been with us during our FHS years...but were now deceased. Following the Memorial-Time, I gave a prayer..including concerns of absentees. As soon as that serious part of our evening finished, we were “surprized” by several of the “locals”...led by Renae Neprud Tollefson. All of them were dressed in various “senior- citizen” attaire...which added a light-hearted touch to our evening. M.C. Jerry Faris introduced former faculty, who were guests for the evening: Bill Hass Sylvan Iona Vigness, Barbara White Vance Penney, Ardys Samp Arthur Madson. Thankyou gifts of remembrance were at each place-setting for those who had served in leadership areas for our class, during each of the four years at FHS. In appreciation for the coordination of our 50th Reunion, a gift-basket of “treats” had been carefully brought from Rorida by Arvin Beverly, and given on behalf of the Class, to me...Jacque. Thank you all! By 7:30PM we were on our way to the Crystal Theater for the evening program. As we entered, the pre-recorded 50’s music was being played by Larry Anderson. Community people and other Alumni had been invited to join with us, Around 8PM, about 24 of the Randreau Alumni Band, led by former Majorettes Renae Neprud Tollefson and Mary Ann Pottebaum Sorenson, marched down both isles ot the Crystal, playing the FHS School Song. Tiiey gathered across the front of the stage, as everyone sang the familiar words, a few tears could be seen glistening in the eyes of classmates! After that opening “nostalgia” I (Jacque) welcomed everyone, from the stage of the Crystal, and then the lights dimmed down to begin the showing of photos, which had been scanned from the Archival Book, which had been printed for each classmate. I gave a brief narration, as Steven Dahlmeier had the computerized Power Point change each picture. Following our show, Arvin Schultz, a former Mayor of Jackson, MN, presented monetary gifts to Warren Ludeman, Mayor of Flandreau, on behalf of our FHS Class of ‘54. qiven in thankfulness for our “Randreau Foundation. For frie “Grande-Finale” of our evening program, we had a special guest, introduced as Judge Charles Flandrau. Attorney Rollyn Samp (son of Eldon Samp) came dressed in the attire of the latter 1800’s, and presented a short monologue of the history about how our hometown was named for that Judge. After sending him a token check of appreciation, he sent back a note saying “thanks a million for allowing me to be part of this special evening and the many kindnesses extended towards my mother and the memory of my father.” He also said that our $ 50 will go toward his fund to acquire books written by Judge Randrau. Larry Anderson, FHS Class of ‘55, provided our 50’s pre-recorded music, and sent an e-mail saying, “I realize you spent many hours, days, and months to co-ordinate your Class of 54 Reunion, and your efforts were certainly evident, by the outcome. It is without a doubt the best class reunion I’ve ever seen in Flandreau, or anywhere else. I congratulate you on your diligent work! I guess Randeau is one town that takes much pride in trying to preserve some good old-fashioned standards...there are not many communities that donate the work that it takes to remember old friends.” Several classmates also sent kind notes which were appreciated so much. Even after 50 years...we can feel a “bond” with one another...as if we’d never been apart! 3. Sunday July 4th we met at the Moody County Museum. . . located next to the old swimming pool...on the road to the Flandreau Park. Activities began at 9AM with an Ecumenical Worship Service in the old meeting house, in which the first church services had once been held, in the latter 1800’s. Several of us were in attendance to begin our day. Following that, classmates began to gather with lawn chairs for the Opening Ceremonies by the flag pole. We were entertained with patriotic songs, sung by 4th Grade twins, who are grandsons of Pat Kuhle Sutton. Their Dad, Pat’s son Chuck, also sang, and her son Dan served as M.C. Among the special “honorings” of Spafford employees, was one to 95 yr. old Virgie Cone, mother of our classmate Bill. My sister, Cynthia Jones Johnson was acknowledged as a Spafford 3rd Grade teacher for 25 years. (Born July 1950...just before I began FHS!) After those presentations, members of our Class of ‘54, stood to be recognized, and our Senior Class President, presented a $ 50 check, along with one of our Archival Books, to the Museum. In a note, received from Roberta Williamson, Director of the Museum, she said “Your classmate George Gullidkson was a relative of mine and is a Lovejoy...thank you for your class book and gift of $ 50. We appreciate your thoughtfulness. It was really great to be a part of your Reunion. I hope it starts a fad so other groups will join us on the 4th.” The weather was pleasant and by noon classmates were enjoying the food (especially Indian Tacos) and fellowship with one another and also other family members and friends. At 1 PM, we were treated to the Alumni Band Concert, as we sat and rested in lawn chairs. By 2PM, we went across the street and were once again so thankfully welcomed- into the home of Mary Fleming, for a time of food and “farewell”. Some stayed around until the Royal River Fireworks, at dusk. Some others had not returned again for events on Sunday. Still others (such as myself)...drove 20 miles, to my sister’s farm, and collapsed on her bed in exhausted sleep., for a nap...before enjoying a family picnic.
