Here she comes now-- Hello, Miss Mead, I'm Larry Wilson and this is Pat Baker. We are representingFlanaganI-IighSchool's year- book. We would like to ask you some questions, if you don't mind. Why yes, Larry and Pat, I'd be happy to answer any questions that you might have. Perhaps you could tell us your age and where you attend college? Yes, I am 20 years old and attend the University of Mississippi. Do you intend to go back? I certainly do. I have a year and a half left, and I hope to get my Master's, too. Then I would like to teach English at 'Ole Miss' . ' I-low did you become Miss America? My sorority at college entered me in various contests and fkept winning, much to my surprise, until I finally got to be Miss America of 1960. Do you have any hobbies? Why yes, I do. I collect records, but Ican't sing or play the piano myself. I also like water sports. Do you think being Miss America has any educational value? I certainly do. I think one year as Miss America is more educational than several years of college. I see things first hand and I believe this is valuable to me. But most important, I am getting a better knowledge of the United States and it makes me really appreciate it. It makes me very proud of the United States. Do you find that people are very different from one part of the country to another? No, I find people are-pretty much the same throughout the United States except for a little different accent. A friend of mine back home told me, You'll have to hasten your Mississippi pace somewhat, and I have. Do you ever get homesick, Miss Mead? I surely do. I saw my family for the first time in two months about three weeks ago. Tell us about your family. My family lives in Natchez, Mississippi, my hometown. My father sells cars in Natchez. And then there is my mother and brother. Miss Mead, that is a very pretty green suit you have on. Who designs your clothes? Why, thank you. Everglade designs all my clothes especially for me and they are the latest designs. Most of my clothes are wrinkleproof because of my constant travel. It doesn't look like you have any problem keeping trim like most of us girls do. How do you do it? No, I don't havethat trouble right now, anyway, I have a problem of losing too much weight because of a lack of sleep and not taking time to eat. Have you had any marriage proposals? About five or six, I guess, from 5 or 6 year olds. What do you think of going steady? I went steady in high school and I think if you have never done it, it would be a good idea to do so, so you know what it's all about. I don't think a young person should be deprived of going steady, anyway, atleast once. l-Iowever, I do think it is much better and smarter to play the field and go with several. I dol Well, Miss America, our time is about up but I would like to say that you're not at all whatl had expected. You're so reall Thank you very much: many people have that idea of Miss America, but I'm just a college girl and I get occasional failing marks on tests and so forth like anyone else. Good Bye, Miss Mead, it was so nice to have met you. Thank you, it was nice to have met you. I especially enjoy talking to high school and college students. Well, Pat, she surely is a pretty girl and nice, too. In fact, she was just tremendous ! Oh, I know it. That was an experience I'll never forget as long as I live. Just think, Pat, we talked to her, shook hands with her, took pictures of her, and got her autograph. And you know what I did? I forget to turn my film for a couple pictures, I was so excited. And if you don't believe us, just ask Lynda Mead, Miss America of 1960. O tee
